  • "told me love was too plebeian!"

  • how do you figure this is karaoke?

  • V for Vendetta!

  • This song is so hard to sing! Julie has great range

  • how is this karaoke?

  • thnxxx this is so helpful

  • you do realize that "karaoke" means an instrumental version of the song with lyrics, right?

  • this is the biggest pile of wank i've ever heard

  • Wow, cool! Sounds great!

    Please try our version /watch?v=W_qNcSjzPDA

    =)

  • Julie was one of the most female females to ever come along. It's too bad that women have adopted some of the worst traits of men and lost the best traits of women.

  • The lady is better dressed than naked, "sex in a dress"

  • Love the effects put on the guitar, which on the original recording was a bit naked.

  • Teriffic, love the editing also the guy frpm Seven year itch, a favourite comedy. Well done !

  • MUY PERRA!!!!!

  • @melianpelona

    Perrita, por favor. :-)

  • Although those aren't the right lyrics, i love the video!

  • is this a scene from a movie?

  • OUI ? ABSOLUMENT "The girl can't help it" from Frank Tashlin 1956 with Jayne Mansfield and Tom Ewell In this same movie you find many artists of that era mainly The Girl Can't Help It - Little Richard Ready Teddy - Little Richard She's Got It - Little Richard Be-Bop-A-Lula - Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps Twenty Flight Rock - Eddie Cochran Blue Monday - Fats Domino You'll Never, Never Know - The Platters CINEMASCOPE &TECHNICOLOR, you'll love it!
  • this is a classic video match with the karaoke lyrics, not perfect tho. but still a great song. Now for those who commented that they cant hear the voice( meaty67,sweetbutdaring, 2consul), well your system may not be well adjusted. The video is a multiplex , right channel is with full vocal, left channel is instrumental.

  • a great voice distroyed by shit strumming guitar added on ....... shame on you

  • v for vendetta.

  • You ruined it by playing a second bass and a second guitar over the original. What the heck do you think you're doing? Or is it the original track played with in ProFOOLS?

  • @2consul I agree sounds STUPID.. I can't even hear her.

  • Genius!!!

  • királynő!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Guitar played by Barney Kessel.

  • Beautiful voice indeed but the days of pouring a martini morning, noon and night was not good for the liver and drinking and driving is a no, no.

  • CLASSICS ARE THE BEST!!

  • What the heck is that language OO? Somehing between Hindi and Hebrew...Oo??? How can you even like turn that into something human???

  • สัญญาของคุณ ไม่เคยทำได้ชักอย่าง

  • good song

  • The Vanity problem,

If we discounted actors and acresses because of vanity, we may be surprised at the how little there would be left. They are only human. I wish they would be more down to the earth and also stay the hell out of politics. Sincerly Kapppz

  • Dear Hepcat2009,

I don't know how accurate your statements are about her vanity--that may have been sour grapes from some male suitors. Julie London was also a pretty fine actress and had a tv show that was very popular. So I would say that with all her different talents she had every right to have a flaw, and if vanity was it, it was certainly overlooked by a lot of people.

  • @canyondam I do agree. I think even from watching this you can see a strong actress. She does a great job in the video in my opinion.

  • "Told me love was too plebeian" not "Told me love was true to be in".

  • char-u r correct !

  • The words are wrong -- it's "Told me love was too plebeian"

  • am i going insane or did this not have singing on it before?

  • Some men have hard life lessons to learn before they get it right!!!!

  • it's 'you told me love was too plebeian (common or vulgar), told me you were through with me and now you say...' etc - still it's a great clip! thankS! this is one of my favorite songs and she does it better than anyone i've heard, even though just about everybody has tried

  • The Julie London fashion show...

  • What a dish...and a voice to boot. At least her talent in some way made up for her vanity. I know from interviewing many Kenton musicians that Julie seemed to be the #1 gal that Stanley wished he could have possessed.

  • Judie, Thanks for sharing.

Without question Julie's Best with that soft and sultry Voice of hers.

    Just great.

    Parker

  • The line goes "told me love was too plebian" as in..love is for the common folk

  • Shes GREAT!************************

  • she's beautiful! look back, way back in history and you find the real beauties

  • myheart715...

That's because after World War II there were 3 women for every man so they had to be more then beauties they had to be seductresses too.

    Parker

  • Comment removed

  • thanks for posting excellent! just a smal point , i think its /told me love was too plebian/ie her man thinks its beneath his dignity to give her his love..

  • 'shadow of your smile' would have been a perfect song for her

  • Apart from the wonderfulness of Julie London, it's Tom Ewell in what appears to be an out take from The Seven Year Itch with Julie substitued for Marilyn. It even looks like the same sets! It's like they had Tom and the stage at Fox handy for a good music video for Julie London.

  • high contrast TOTALLY sampled this song in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

  • she's everywhere! oh Julie, you will never die. never. thanks for posting this!

  • the timeless Julie London,

    ......

    x

  • She was better looking and had a better body than Marilyn MONroe.

  • Love this lady.

  • ple⋅be⋅ian /plɪˈbiən/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [pli-bee-uhn] Show IPA

adjective 1. belonging or pertaining to the common people

  • Julie is magic...

  • I love this song so much.....

  • The line is "Told me love was too plebian."--arnie113

  • @arnie113 plebEian :P lol

  • the lyrics are wrong

  • haven't seen this movie yet but it reminds me of the seven year itch. looks like its gonna be great! thanks for adding it!

  • This blew me out when I was 17 and saw t'The Girl Can't Help It'. It still has the same effect over 50 years later,

  • To clarify the plebian saga: the song WAS originally written for Ella to sing in Pete Kelly's Blues, starring Julie's ex, Jack Webb. It was Jack who said no one would believe that a black woman would use the word. Call it fate, but the writer of the song, Arthur Hamilton, had been a h.s. classmate of Julie's & Julie was just planning to record her 1st album. Amazing how things work out. And no, this isn't an old music video as someone suggested, but rather a clip from The Girl Can't Help It.

  • I love Julie London!! I have seen this movie so many times over the years. Jayne Mansfield played in it right? Doesn't her daughter look a lot like her? Olivia from "SVU". Thanks for posting this.

  • Ahh Julie

  • I saw this via film projector in San Francisco in the '80s--not easy to see before the internet. It surprised me at the time to learn that music videos were being made decades before MTV.

  • i heard this from V for Vendetta

    good movie

    good song

  • Wonderful singer -

  • I love Julie London, She has a very beautiful voice.

  • love this song <3

  • BEAUTIFULNOUR,

The lyrics are not "love was true to be in".

The lyrics are "love was too plebian".

  • Exactly! ...and isn't it true that they wanted, originately, to have Ella Fitzgerald cover it, but that the word "plebian" had to be changed, as the record company didn't think the record buying public (mainly white)would believe a black woman would know what plebian meant?

  • @AuroraABC Despite my poor understanding of spoken (or sung) English, I also think the next verse is "told me you were true with me" instead of "through". How could "through" make sense here ?

  • @synsei1 "Through with me" means done with me, breaking up with me and moving on. It does make sense. "True with me" doesn't make sense; the proper grammar is "true to me" and that means faithful to me, the exact opposite of what is happening in this song.

  • @AuroraABC I thought I heard "true".

Thanks, I'll go to sleep smarter than I was when I woke up.

  • @synsei1 You're welcome.

  • 'Through with me' yes does mean finished with me. The character she was singing to had broken off the relationship. In other words he instigated the breakup. Now he regrets his actions and wants to take up with her again. She on the other hand thinks that the amoount of emotional suffering she felt in the relationship outweighs any sympathy she feels for him. Stephen Galvin Singing Lessons in Auckland City Centre.

  • Well spotted!

  • @AuroraABC that's spot on about the lyrics but it's spelt plebeian... it's like saying love is beneath them... that it doesn't fit in with their standard of life.. just a fyi... oh and btw.. I absolutely love this song..

  • love this song. <3

  • Hey, I am sure there are a couple of these messages but the lyrics you have "Told me love was true to be in" is actually "Told me love was too plebeian" (Plebeian was a Roman word for poor commoners.) But thanks for the video post, it's a great song and a great scene. :D

  • I'm so glad I found this I love this song!!! kudos for uploading it!!!

  • Holaaaaa!!!

Te echaba de menos... Me encata Julie London y esta canción la tengo en mi repertorio particular de casa. Es ¡¡PRECIOSA!!

    Besos,

    Elsa.

  • she was pure class - a female voice to die for.

  • Julie was a one in a million singer. Beautiful, and so underrated. Thank you for posting this.

  • Perfect! Thanks for uploading this piece of art!

  • drove me wild in the late 50s .. in the girl can't help it .. and still does now .. 40+ years later.. what a babe ..

  • Never fails to fascinate

  • It is nothing compared to Ella. It is a lot better imho.

  • I don't know if someone already pointed this out, but the line is "Told me love was too plebeian", not "True to be in".

  • Wonderful video! Thanks for posting it! Julie London was something special, wasn't she!

  • julie london was an extremly beautiful sexy women, just saw her in the red house, MUST SEE!

  • the unique great female crooner julie london! she's like dean martin simply great!

  • Piękna kobieta!

  • So bealtiful voice.

  • Yes, "plebeian," is a very unusual word. Plebs refer to lower class common people of ancient Rome. So, "(You) told me love was too plebeian," means, "(You) told me love was low class and common," as if the speaker was previously too stuck up and elite to love anyone.

  • All point of view is subjective.

  • The best female vocalist ever! The femininity, intimacy, sexiness, use of voice! She gives me a thrill like no one else. When I´m living through difficult times I play only Julie and she takes the edge off the misery. One of the biggest ups in life and I only discovered her less than a year ago!My personal favorites of her are "The End of the World", "´Round Midnight", "A Cottage for Sale", "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" and "The Day of Wine And Roses". Get to know her!

  • awesome my grandpas favorite lol

  • OH MY GOODNESS!

  • Sorry ..I must correct in my former comment... plebeian is the correct word.....

    jk.

  • USA.

  • In the fall of 1955 I began my freshman year in college. This beautiful song by Julie London was very popular and on the radio stations several times each day. Great memories. Thank you beautifulnour.

  • 2egyptyou are absolutely RIGHT, we can no longer have this kind of music today and all we have are garbage music(noise) sang by people with no style and attitude. Makes me feel sorry for this generation for missing the real music and what it should be.

  • HERMOSO

  • This is absolutely fabulous! Thank you!

  • Dear beautifulnour: it's nice to have a karaoke version, but it's a shame you don't have the lyrics to this true classic right: "TOLD ME LOVE WAS TOO PLEBEIAN" are the correct words!!!

  • Plebeian - I never knew - I was totally in love with this song in 1957 and it' still the best of all the YouTube versions - even much much and another much better than Streisand - Going to Wiki to hear she is still alive

  • Singers like this (and actors like this, since she was a GREAT actress even before she became known as a singer) should live forever and doom us, other mortals, to Heaven or Hell, but unfortunately the supid laws of the nature have condemned us to death. She is no longer with us.

  • You are correct!it isn't: ""to be in"" but Pleibeian.

  • They don't write songs like this anymore. I can't stand the

trashy rap music...they call that music??? THIS IS MUSIC.

  • Excellent! Julie London pretty much set the standard with this tune. If anyone ever asks, "What is a torch song?" refer them to this tune.

  • He told her love was too plebian (for common people). He did not tell her love was true to be in. Makes a big difference in the meaning of the song.

  • julie london, es magnifica, inolvidable, que voz tan hermosa y que cancion mas bella.

  • While Julie London does a remarkable job with this song, the real credit for this song's sound and success should go to Barney Kessel, who arranged the song, supervised the recording and played the guitar. Barney was a world-class jazz guitarist and famous first-call studio musician for movie and recording studios alike. Due to his creative talents, few people realize that the only instruments on this recording are his guitar and the bass guitar. Check out some of his videos here on You Tube.

  • Right - equal credit - I never forgothis name either

  • i cried a river over you!!!nice song!

  • What a great looking bird.

  • Magnificent!

  • Oh such a wonderful bygone age, sooooo Romantic

  • That was a cool. Thanks.

  • Angel, you're comparing different styles, Julie and Ella were both great in what they did, but Ella was never considered a torch singer, at least to my knowledge!

  • Julie owns "Cry Me a River". Ella owns "Misty".

  • The best of the best, Julie was silky and svelt, and that was just her voice, the best of the torch singers!

  • TOLD ME LOVE WAS TOO PLEBIAN (NOT to be in!!!)

  • julie c'est vraiment un prenom de tafiolle

  • it makes me scare! maybe the first horror-music-video !!!

  • her waist was sooo tiny...

  • wierd..

  • Julie was a first-rate, high-class act! I like it when she decides to sing up-beat songs like "Kansas City," with a full size orchestra.

  • Impressive special effect!! However, her voice is timeless....

  • Any one who bought a Norah Jones album should rush out and buy anything by Julie London. You won't be disappointed!

  • Karaoke Stars Here

  • Smokey voiced, sultry, suitable for listening with a cocktail in hand, Julie London, a smooth chanteuse.

  • Julie London in all her blues and Nina Simone in ''I don't want him''etc...= 60's bluest blues.

  • she was sheer class

  • it's definetly nothing compared to Ella... but it's good.

  • you shouldn't say this. julie is a pop singer, she has completely another style of singing, and she's ace at it

  • no i don't really agree. there are tons of great pop singers with a better range and voice than juile... ella was considered pop at one point also. I'm just comparing to artists... I really do think this is very good song but when I hear Ella I'm just kicked.

  • The lyrics are wrong in some places.

  • "TOLD ME LOVE WAS TRUE TO BE IN"

    should be

'TOLD ME LOVE WAS TOO PLEBEAN'

  • You are correct !

  • I wanted to blow up every radio station that played Joe Cocker's remake of this song. The sultry tone was removed. I'm sure Julie wasn't crazy about it either.

  • I have this video too, only it says, tole me love was too plebeian." Rather than "Told me love was true to me and..." Plebian makes more sense, but I'm not sure.

  • I can't say I'm a big fan of the film though it's beautifully shot.

But I bought it for this particular scene. Love her!

  • The footage is from the 50's film "The Girl Can't Help It" starring Jayne Mansfield.

  • Is that Jack Webb?

  • It's Tom Euwell, who was also in The Seven Year Itch with Marilyn Monroe. I know I spelled his name wrong!

  • NO IT IS NOT

  • It's not "Told me love was true to be in", it's "Told me love was too plebian"

  • Good one matey

  • Top artist from the 50's,60's, class & style!!!!!

Supported by her husband Bobby Troup.

  • Hello Rampart, we have a horny young man here, wanting nurse Dixie McCall, stat!!

  • every household should have a copy of the album JULIE IS HER NAME!

  • What a cool video! Julie London is so beautiful...

  • She is the best..
