  • Most underrated band of the past decade. Seriously, these guys are super talented. The Decemberists are def in the top 5 of my favorite bands.

  • Way to represent PDX! Rock on!

  • Helena (Montana) homeboy makes the big time! (Good job, Colin.)

  • ahhhhhhh i <3 them i really do

  • Did Gillian or Decemberists ever release this as a single?

  • good song, i wish there was more new folk/rock around.

  • the version on WFUV sounds better

  • So what if it sounds like REM thats really not a bad thing.

  • I thought I was listening to "The River" when it first started.

  • Its sounds like REM because Peter Buck produced the record and played guitar on it

  • This is just full of super HOT stuff!!!

  • No shame to sound like mid-late 80's R.E.M......

  • Is it just me, or does the drummer look like Adam Savage?

  • @chrissme555 I think that's a myth.

  • "This one goes out to the one I love..." - Sounds familiar?

  • @pentrac it really has that R.E.M. sound.

  • This is Americana. No doubt about it

  • I thank God for the day I found out about the Decemberists, the world really needs 'great' new bands like these who are fresh, exciting and original. I m hooked and I love it.

  • I have grown to hate this song.hearing it at least once every day will do that to you.

  • Once again, I'm the odd man out who've never heard these guys (though I've heard of them). Love their sound, gotta check out the rest of the CD!

  • This song gives me chills... Amazing

  • Am I the only one who thought this was Golden Smog the first time I heard it?

  • This is INCREDIBLE. The Decemberists are so unpredictable with their live performances, either it's just sorta meh, or it blows the studio version completely away. This is definitely the latter. <3

  • Adam Savage sounds great on the drums!

  • Does anyone know what key harmonica he's playing?

  • @SplinterInYourEye Em? C?

  • @Midwestern72...it's not just the guitar playing by Buck. Colin specifically wrote several songs to in tribute to REM, including this one and Calamity Song. He was listening to REM's Reckoning an awful lot and decided to try his hand writing "faux REM songs." He liked the results so much he invited Buck to appear on the album, and Buck agreed. It's not just guitar playing that makes it sound like REM...it's the entire song structure.

  • I love this video!

  • Comment removed

  • It would be so cool to jam with these guys!

  • Jillian Welch under sang a lil but Jenny, the drummer and everyone was pretty much on their A game!

  • Great band, saw them at Bonaroo and they were even better. I don't think there are many better bands live then them, no one puts in the same effort and class

  • The bridge of Colin Meloy's guitar looks like it's a mustache :]

  • That riff during the verses is pure old school 80's REM. As an REM fan I recognized that right away. After looking into the making of the album I found out that Peter Buck played on three tracks, so it was amazing to me just how recognizable Buck's guitar style is. It really stands apart, especially today.

  • @Midwestern72 it really reminds me of "the one i love", I keep thinking he's gonna go "Fire!!!".

I mean that purely in a good way by the way.

  • @Midwestern72 definitely has REM all over it, probably why I like it so much.

  • My kind of jam ~ Very Nice

  • Good song- but it's sort of alarming that people are saying Gillian Welch looks hot. She obviously doesn't spend nearly as much time on style as she does on singing. Not saying that's a bad thing... but that straight frizzy hair over a leather jacket and dress is just kinda... bleh.

  • @YesYouAreIgnorant that IS alarming. thank you for pointing that out. i definitely watch videos of musical performances to find out what other viewers think of the of the hair styles and clothing worn by the band, and whether people think that they are 'hot' or 'bleh'. nobody gives a shit what she wears, she isn't in a fashion show.

  • @papasmurf31 I'm sorry I made you cry =(

    hug it out?

  • @YesYouAreIgnorant I accidentally thumbed up your statement when trying to thumb it down. You are everything that is wrong with music. Go watch MTV reality shows.

  • @CairnsMC3 You are everything that is wrong with reading. I was responding to people saying how hot she was and simply pointing out that she really isn't very attractive in this video. I didn't make the comment out of the blue. What's funny is that in your fit of rage you clicked the wrong button. QQ

  • some people hate this song because some view it as an rem ripoff. i love it especially the harmonica solos

  • man, they were on point

  • They were clearly on their A Game that night!!

  • look at the drummer.... hes jamming! I love Jenny too! :)

  • a lot of singers sound like shit live, but colin meloy sounds godlike. i much prefer him this way!

  • shoulda had this song in Alan Wake

  • My two favorites! <3 Gillian Welch <3 The Decemberists!

  • @racewalkking13 gillian welch is fine too :)

  • @chromacopy365 theres a reason for the similarities, REM's own peter buck was the gituarist on this track, also amy of the songs on the album are REM-esque. but trust me, the decemberists have their own sound, there is a difference between similar to, and sound like a copy of.

tl;dr yeah, but listen to their other stuff

  • Team Jenny! <3

  • gillian new album is great !

  • rem

  • sounds like a Neil Young song to me

  • They made a great move by letting the best guitarist ever, Peter Buck, record this song w/ them.

  • 最高!!!

  • The harmonies sound like the Jayhawks.

  • I love it <3

  • jenny <3

  • sort of has an R.E.M sound to it!

  • @iopweck : Sort of? It's basically "The One I Love"! Instead of singing "The season rubs me wrong, The summer swells anon" just substitute "Fire!!! Fire!!!"

  • my thoughts exactly....sounds like something right off Life's Rich Pageant...25 years ago...having said that Gillian Welch is great@iopweck

  • The commentary here is some of the most inane I've ever seen. I think my IQ dropped a few points just trying to read the posts.

  • @DWTish These tools? I've heard a lot of poor opinions in my day but this one wins some kind of "Complete Lack of Reasonable Taste" award.

  • Muuuuuuuito bom!!!!!!!!!

  • when did James hetfield start playing drums for Decemberists? lmao

  • @dfontaine38 Nice! Ha!

  • I absolutely love Mediaoutletonline for getting fffreeee tuunes like this one... Yall can find it using Bing.

  • Sweet. Gillian really put the icing on the cake.

  • Wow....Gillian Welch looks GOOD! Good voice too.... love this song!

  • Coolest bass run I've seen in ages

  • They still sound amazing live :) That's true talent!

  • I like this version, but I love Peter Buck's style of guitar playing way better. Plus, Buck used his Rickenbacker on the studio version.

  • I think this was a superior version. I loved the harmonies and don't believe she over sang them at all. I liked the duo even better than the original recorded version. This is part of why I like the song so much the inter play of voices. Simply Lovely!

  • What? she's totally off, completely ruined it.

  • I still think Gillian Welch oversang the harmonies a bit

  • @WingyWonky00 That was the mixing engineer who did it

  • lovely voice wow

  • Dcemberists FTW!

  • its like a band made of ppl from tv shows that 70 show mythbuster and the office

  • I can't tell if thats Dwight Schrute or Peter Griffin lolz. Cool guys

  • Fuck yeah accordians

  • we r in 2011 not 1960 :P.tooo old for me

  • @soulreaperichig0 Loser.

  • @Ecodega ur middle name

  • @soulreaperichig0 How creative. you're still a loser. now go move out of your mom's house. "soulreaper". could anyone thing of a more moronic name?

  • @Ecodega yep u can think of a more moronic name ecodog :D.i will live where i want to who the hell are u to tell me that ecodog :P. i may be a loser but i still will defeat u in every field that exists on the planet xD.

  • @Ecodega i think that his name is from the show bleach

  • when the music reaches a perfect harmony becomes in a coral reef... : -)

  • reminds me of REM

  • @reductobeam Peter Buck of REM plays guitar in this song on the album

  • @Cnat123 No way! This has always sounded like an REM song to me, now I know why...duh.

  • @owenmatt Yep, I def hear "The One I Love" when I hear this song.. both amazing!

  • He looks like Clark Kent...LOL

  • superb

  • This is sublimely awesome music :D I am in awe of this song

  • YEP, this is a perfect song.. perfect instruments, melody, harmony and vocals!!! So glad Conan has them as guests!

  • You know what's wrong with this song? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! From the first tap of the drum to thevery end, it's friggin' amazing!

  • @sfbayguysf I agree, totally! :)

  • Gillian Welch makes a great song even greater!

  • good song and great too see Gillian getting some exposure. Anyone who likes the Decemberists, or music for that matter, should listen to Welch

  • @guitashamilele

    Welch, are they/he/she on Tube?

  • @wokkawicklo Gillian Welch is the lady at the front singing harmony.. you may know her from the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack.. She's not a member of the band, just a guest vocalist.

  • good song and great too see Gillian and David Rawling getting some exposure. Anyone who likes the Decemberists, or music for that matter, should listen to Welch

  • FIIIRREEE!

  • I listen to this and my heart warms and think there is still hope out there that people want to listen to real music, none of that fabricated marketed junk. This guys are F@$#@ awesome, talented, play their own instrument. It gives me chills!! As a matter of fact I think the leadsinger is kind of sexy.

  • "folk music" rears it's shameless head , yet again...

  • when did Dwight Schrute start up a new band?...I kid. Good song!

  • @ToadXibit If dwight schrute started a band, the lead singer would be a bear.

  • @ToadXibit when did Ben Gibbard start up a new band!? ;)

  • I remember watching this on Conan. Yes. Yes yes. This album displays Colin's strongest lyric-writing and just, everything meshes so well on this album. Since I've bought the album I've been geared up for summer and hopefully a roadtrip. The whole album makes you want to explore and discover back-country roads and camp and... take advantage of all the opportunities that the hot-days and sultry-grass-smell nights have to offer. It's summer and spring all in an album.

  • I just saw them like two hours ago, best live performance ever. They're absolutely amazing.

  • oh Jenny...Marry me

  • Love this song and this band...they ROCK!!!

  • This is a great song....this is music!

  • great band

  • MERAVIGLIOSI!

  • Gr8 Track of a gr8 band. Any chance to see them live in Austria?

  • Gr8 Track of a gr8 band. Any chance to see them live in Austria?

  • 2 people need to be taken Down By The Water and thrown in.

  • They're just a bit too happy for my liking. I have little time for 'fun' folk and country. It should be dark, serious and have gravitas. Gillian Welch is AMAZING.

  • @deemoid Give the crane wife album a listen. Not happy. I don't think there's a single happy song on the album. How do you mean fun, anyway?

  • @deemoid Seriously, go listen to earlier albums by them. I think they deserve to have a happier album. The Hazards of Love and the Crane Wife were depressing and dark as hell.

  • he drowns out gillian--how bout sharing

  • @iceaxe56 lol sharing

  • I have never seen a live performance that sounded so exactly like the track on the record. Wow.

  • I just saw them live in Bristol and wasn't massively impressed. I would have been REALLY exited if I'd known they'd ever played with GW. She's a total legend.

  • @deemoid

Yeah, saw them in Manchester last Thursday, and it wasn't great.

  • Now THIS is music. This band rocks.

  • Gillian Welch, rock chick, i love this!

  • I saw REM back when they were raw and this group has their old fire. Rock lives on... I am now Decemberista!

  • Accordion Solo!!! You don't see that every often. Kick Ass

  • 503 area code represent!

  • reminds me of a good version of r.e.m

  • Just printed off the tickets 30 minutes ago, gonna see them april 25th in Grand Rapids.

  • Awesome!

  • the bys are fuckin mint.

  • Ha ! I'm going to that gig on the 4th in Vicar St !

  • does mythbusters know adam savage is a drummer now?

  • @law128 since when is he blonde 0__o

but he does look a lot like him, i agree

  • @law128 loL!

  • why is c. funk hidden?

  • Sparkle Poney finally played the Festival...

  • i saw them when they came to milwaukee this tour...the only thing that describes how amazing they were is i started crying tears of joy when i was leaving the theatre...im a guy

  • Oops. They're Communists!

  • @mrbippy I thought they were Decemberists. You're confusing Lenin with Lennon.

  • Like their music and Gill is the best of course. Too bad their Communists.

  • @mrbippy Too bad you're grammatically challenged ;)

  • God! I just luv this song.

  • REM called.......they'd like "The One I Love" back.

  • @Adrenailine Yeah, Buck played guitar on this record too.

  • @Adrenailine

I saw The Decemberists in Athens, Georgia in 2009. Meloy knows where he got the melody from. He'd be thrilled if R.E.M. DID call.

  • @Boclive1 Peter Buck called at least - he played guitar on 3 songs on the album. BAM! We showed that guy.

  • really enjoyed this ... reminds me a lil of springsteen, the early years..esp the harmonica licks

  • WONDERFUL!!! Made me smiiiiiiillllleee

  • An instant classic.

  • This is real music!

  • Saw them in Montreal a couple of weeks ago. Absolutely fantastic show!

  • this one goes out to the one i love...

  • @jphishb04 I hear it to!

  • @jphishb04 I hear it too!

  • Holy shit this is awesome! I love Gillian Welch!

  • Really great sound and do not agree w/ treyrawles that drums need turning down. Quite reminiscent of R.E.M. which is a very good thing in my view. First I've really known of them and my radar's out for them now in Central Florida and elsewhere.

  • AWESOME...Thank god for alternative music!!!

  • The drums are too much and too loud. Love the song but TURN DOWN THE DRUMS.

  • great song
