Is this something that can be done at home as a hobby from start to finish or would you run into problems when injecting the gasses. Is there a lot of expensive equipment other than the torch?
@Dlitz3 Sure do it at home. But it would be a lot of tries to be a pro. I'm not a neon sign maker although I wanted to be one. Yes, some of the stuff is expensive such as helium and neon.
@Dlitz3 Since many neon sign companies are going out of business right now neon equipment is the cheapest it's ever been. However it takes a lot of time to get good at bending. Putting the Neon (or Argon) gas in the tubes is also very dangerous, a person could easily get electrocuted from the high voltage needed for that process.
@Dlitz3 Hi , sure you can do this at home as a hobby . It has been my hobby all my life ( I also collect lamps bulbs and tubes , etc ) - also sometimes - as now- it has been my job . I made my first neon tube when I was 11 . You dont necessarily need expensive equipment , I have made neon tubes with almost no " proper " equipment, although the right equipment is great ( but doent have to be expensive ) I am 100% self taught . If youre really interested go for it ,dont let people put you off.
From what I can see, you look like a very competent and professional glassbender. You must have learnt these skills from the crazy Leeds guy you were studying together with, during your time at Masonlite!!! Sound familiar???
Why, just don't use a American burners if you work l;ead glass, The "cleaning after" process don't make sense, I always believe that the Europ style is perfect when pump, but is a little "dump" when bend the glass....anyway....
Why does the glass that's been heated look so black after you're done bending it ? Is this just a normal by product of heating the glass ? Just curious . Interesting trade !
Great skill... makes it look easy :

Interesting method but using your mouth seems a bit hazardous to your health because of the phosphorus and other chemicals. Why not use a blow hose?

i use a blowhose most of the times
just not on small stuf

we use leadfree glass now, easyer and no cleaning
we have one strain fracture in a year, not so bad i think
we all have our pros and cons in how we make a tube,it all comes down to the same i think

could u use soda lime glass

Less forgiving though on strains.

this is lead glass, this type of burner brings out the lead on to the surfuce of the glass
when the tube is ready(bending and pumping )we remove the lead by cleaning it with fluoric acid
this is the fastest way to make a neontube i believe
