They seriously gotta stop choosing films that look fancy and take place in a fancy time period if they choose "The Artist" this year then the academy is really messed up
@TheChicagoguy I agree. We need more films in deserts and jungles and other settings that make the boobs and explosions look really awesome!!11. 'Fancy' films win because they make a good movie with plot, character and dialogue, which is much harder than making a fun action movie.
i agree colin should have won for best actor, but david fincher should have won for best director, and inception should have won for best picture...and tbh original screenplay, yes kings speech was good, but it happened, inception was the most original film there
@penscratcher Did you actually take the time out of watching Star Wars re-runs to watch The Kings Speech? Inception wasnt the worst but if you aren't 12, TKS was without a doubt the best film. Saw them all and it was pretty obvious.
@tonedef11 I wouldn't say it was quite as much of clean sweep as that, but "The King's Speech" was definitely the well-deserved winner. "Inception" was, I think, a logical contender for the oscar, particularly given what the rest of the competition was like. The worst of the bunch (in my mind at least) were "The Social Network" and "The Fighter". I can't imagine what the academy was thinking with those nominees.
The Jurassic Park theme played when Steven Spielberg walked on stage. And in my opinion, The King's Speech really deserved the Oscar. Please, don't start giving me comments about how other movies should have won, be glad they even got nominated.
@bbaggins1298 I have nothing against The King's Speech as a movie. Acting chemistry was phenomenal but, to me, on a whole, it wasn't as revolutionary or ground-breaking or dangerous as past Oscar winners
The Academy Awards are to award the advancement of motion arts and science, yes there was art but not much in terms of science. Nuff said.
@bbaggins1298 Thank you so much! Personally I wanted Toy Story 3 to win, but I was just happy that it got nominated and I was happy that The King's Speech won
Inception > Black Swan > The Social Network > True Grit > Toy Story 3 > The King's Speech > The Fighter > 127 Hours > The Kid's Are Alright > Winter's Bone.
Overall a pretty good year for movies though. Unlike 2009.
Whenever British films and British actors upstage American films and American actors at the Oscars, the amount of hate that Americans spew out is simply hilarious to read. Keep going, all of you. It's quite entertaining!!
inception was a creation of a genius man...it was not based on a novel but others are...the whole idea was created by him......and the film recogonised as the best picture of the decade....stilll why oscars are given for the real life films?.....inception should have won whole awards nominated for it...
the social network is a good movie and I love the film editing and the acting of jesse...incepcion is great I think that cristopher nolan had to be nominated to best director...but the king's speech is a masterpiece and the story is perfect and touching, it's just one of the greatest movie ever!
WELL-DESERVED, A FILM SUBLIME - VERY WELL PRODUCED, BASED ON A REAL EVENT. IS NOT EQUAL TO OTHER FILMS STORIES, WHICH ARE BORING AND TIRING. TOM HOOPER ON GIVING DRAMA WITH LIGHT COMEDY. COLIN FIRTH PERFECT (YOUR BEST PERFORMANCE!). THEY SHOULD ALSO HAVE GEOFFREY RUSH WINS AN OSCAR AND HELENA BONHAM CARTER. HIGHLIGHTS THE PARTICIPATION OF JENNIFER EHLE. NOTE 10 MOVIE!
not hating king's speech i haven't watched it but i have heard it is really good but i think the social network should have won i mean come on when spielberg said the social network every1 started screaming and clapping louder that means a lot
Notice that Spielberg mentioned Citizen Kane in his speech.
Just because The King's Speech won doesn't mean that it was better than The Social Network. The Social Network is going to be the one that's remembered.

The Academy better have 5 Nominations for this year 2011 I like it when it was 5. I'm glad that a silly kids film like Toy Story 3 did not win this award. Funny that the stars of Rio were here Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway who will later play Catwoman. And No way can the story of Facebook could win this award too. As per Spielberg's list, I'd much rather prefer being with the films that were nominated but didn't win, rather than the films that won Best Pic.
@ThePandaOfDooom he ain't gonna fuking win an oscar if he keeps making popcorn blockbusters like batman and inception, he gots to go back to his roots like memento. nobody needs to give oscar to blockbuster films.

I would have been fine with TSN, TKS, or "Inception" winning. It's almost guaranteed TSN and "Inception" will be regarded as classics later and will pass the test of time.
There are so many Best Picture Oscar winners which are better than On The Waterfront, Midnight Cowboy, 'The Godfather' and 'The Deer Hunter' ! So many and so much better!
To those of you who are saying that 'The Social Network' or some other film should've won, you should watch 'The King's Speech', and then judge for yourselves. I'm not saying that 'The King's Speech' deserved to win, but after watching the film, you will understand why the film scored big at the Oscars, deserved or not. That's the reality of the Oscars, I'm afraid.
Those of you who're saying TSN should've won, your sentiments are understandable. Fantastic film, no doubt. But, the reality is that TKS was made with only one intention - scoring big at the Oscars, which it did. Oscar-winning formula - portrayal of a disability, set during World War II, acting royalty in the truest sense (Colin, Helena, Geoffrey were all past nominees), a British historical drama, triumph of the underdog, etc. If that doesn't win you Oscars, what will?
@suchmuch96 Those of you who're saying TSN should've won, I can understand where you're coming from. Fantastic film, no doubt. But, the reality is that TKS was made with the sole intention of scoring big at the Oscars, which it did. Everything was in its favor - portrayal of a disability, set during World War II, acting royalty in the truest sense (Colin, Helena, Geoffrey were all past nominees), a British historical drama, triumph of the underdog, etc. If that doesn't win you Oscars, what will?
Everybody came over on the stage and not only the producers (just like the The Hurt Locker's folks). I have not doubt that the Academy will say to the next nominees for Best Pictures in the following years: "Only the producers on the stage. These is not the Golden Globes".
Everybody came over on the stage and not only the producers. I have not doubt that the Academy will say to the next nominees for Best Pictures in the following years: "Only the producers on the stage. These is not the Golden Globes".
The King's Speech was a beautiful film in terms of acting, casting, cinematography (especially), art, and direction. I mean, it was the whole package and it had the oscar-type story and history. It won because it used all of these effectively to be the best example of what film is for an audience in 2011. TSN was awesome too, but *shrugs* many more such movies are to come.
Guys before you say The Social Network should of won easily, please make sure you've seen The Kings Speech. Its what happened with me going for Shawshank Redemption, but then saw Forest Gump and I changed
An award does not define the caliber of a film. The King's Speech won but that does not mean it is superior to all the other but that the academy thought that it did a slightly better job at captivating an audience.
I watched all of them twice while i was sick in the hospital and as far as i'm concerned THE FIGHTER should have won, cause it was the best MOVIE aka Picture, the rest were movies of 4 stars or 4.5 stars but the Fighter is a movie that, when you watch it, you feel you've discovered a new part of you
@redsoxfan11495 And the Kings Speech was a completely predictable period movie. The only reason people can even say stuff like " Social Network won because it was the most popular" they only say that because it made a lot of money before Oscar season. Heres the real deal, if you cannot appreciate a film without saying how much another film was so horrible, then theres something wrong.
Every single Best Picture nominee could have won and it be a good win, why don't you stop being a sore winner?
What happened to people being just happy something won? Who cares if the Social Network or Kings Speech were both nominated for awards to hell and back? Rather than being immature and degrading the other picture, why don't you just be congratulatory of the two films being made?
Honestly its just sad, seeing all the hate, the two films are amazing, and different, stop being such sore losers, and sore winners as well. Saying you're going to stop watching the Oscars cause something won is pathetic
i knew they would kiss this movie's ass at the oscars, just cuz it has british actors and is about history. true grit should have at least won 1 oscar, after 10 well deserved nominations
@TheMotionMan112 'The Kings's Speech' won big at the Oscars as that is exactly what the film intended to do, and it achieved that. Standardized Oscar-winning formula - portrayal of a disability, set during World War II, acting royalty in the truest sense (Colin, Helena, Geoffrey were all past nominees), a British historical drama, triumph of the underdog, etc. Did the other films stand any chance at all, no matter how wonderful they may have been? No. That's the reality, I'm afraid.
Kings Speech was a great movie, and I knew Social network didnt stand a chance against it due to the nature of both films. Too many people would have a problem with a movie about 'facebook' winning an oscar.
Well deserved win!! It's great to see a film, based on fact, being recognised in this way, instead of the most absolutely ghastly tripe they like to pretend are Oscar worthy films these days.
When the words The King's Speech was said through that microphone, I almost had a heart failure. Black Swan was the all time best movie of this year! Actually, not only of the year but even the century. Black Swan obviously deserved the award!
When the words The King's Speech was said through that microphone, I almost had a heart failure. Black Swan was the all time best movie of this year! Heck, not only of the year but even the century. Black Swan obviously deserved the award!

@mwells219 well, he said what he was expected to say. probably. but to spielberg winning the oscar means an awful lot... if you check youtube and watch his oscar speeches and read about his career, you'll realize how much he wanted an oscar!
I'm just glad The Social Network didn't win. You can thumbs down this all you want, but I've seen The King's Speech, and I was not at all disappointed that this won Best Picture. I would be ecstatic if Toy Story 3 won Best Picture, but if The Social Network had won, I would've stopped watching the Oscars.
It's weird that the audience weren't very enthusiastic; I mean most of them voted for the movie. For the past few years the best picture winner has received a standing ovation.
when spielberg annouce the kings speech for the nominees..it was..clap clap clap.. just as he announce the social network for the nominees..it was.. CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP!!!!!!!!!!
I'm absolutely appalled that "The King's Speech" received this award. I've seen this film and it is not Best Picture material. It was a strange, claustrophobic movie. The Social Network was the far superior film.
Social Network should have one

1. Not giving "Citizen Kane" Best Picture in '41.
1. Not giving "2001: A Space Odyssey" Best Picture in '68.

I love that loads of Americans were pissed off about this. British cinema rules.

There are so many Best Picture Oscar winners which are better than On The Waterfront, Midnight Cowboy, 'The Godfather' and 'The Deer Hunter' ! So many and so much better!

@leonardodp34 Yes, Spielberg had an intent there and he over valued it.

88narayandivya 7 months ago
Those of you who're saying TSN should've won, your sentiments are understandable. Fantastic film, no doubt. But, the reality is that TKS was made with only one intention - scoring big at the Oscars, which it did. Oscar-winning formula - portrayal of a disability, set during World War II, acting royalty in the truest sense (Colin, Helena, Geoffrey were all past nominees), a British historical drama, triumph of the underdog, etc. If that doesn't win you Oscars, what will?

Everybody came over on the stage and not only the producers (just like the The Hurt Locker's folks). I have not doubt that the Academy will say to the next nominees for Best Pictures in the following years: "Only the producers on the stage. These is not the Golden Globes".

TheChopinesque 8 months ago

MadHaTTe1992 8 months ago
What happened to people being just happy something won? Who cares if the Social Network or Kings Speech were both nominated for awards to hell and back? Rather than being immature and degrading the other picture, why don't you just be congratulatory of the two films being made?
Honestly its just sad, seeing all the hate, the two films are amazing, and different, stop being such sore losers, and sore winners as well. Saying you're going to stop watching the Oscars cause something won is pathetic

TheMotionMan112 8 months ago
@TheMotionMan112 'The Kings's Speech' won big at the Oscars as that is exactly what the film intended to do, and it achieved that. Standardized Oscar-winning formula - portrayal of a disability, set during World War II, acting royalty in the truest sense (Colin, Helena, Geoffrey were all past nominees), a British historical drama, triumph of the underdog, etc. Did the other films stand any chance at all, no matter how wonderful they may have been? No. That's the reality, I'm afraid.
88narayandivya 7 months ago
I really like what Spielberg said about not winning still being an achievement, cool dude
Ashrzr 8 months ago 55
Kings Speech was a great movie, and I knew Social network didnt stand a chance against it due to the nature of both films. Too many people would have a problem with a movie about 'facebook' winning an oscar.

I'm just glad The Social Network didn't win. You can thumbs down this all you want, but I've seen The King's Speech, and I was not at all disappointed that this won Best Picture.
