  • deserves a 3DS release thumbs up if your with me

  • yea...that looks so confusing

  • @dash257 and seizurtastic

  • I demand a 3DS remake.

  • This would be a bad game. the camera does'nt move when going back, the fish eye perspective makkes everything confusing to navigate and it looks really boring.

  • @Tailsairlines

Even as a Sonic fan myself, I agree.

Too many would flock to this game because of it's open-worldness and Classic Sonic model. What they don't see is the disorienting view, the lazy camera (outrunning it at jogging speeds), the iffy platforming, the mediocre draw distance, the severe lack in badniks, and just how EASY it is to get lost.

I saw gameplay footage of it once, and the player spent about 5-6 minutes on one level, then it cut off. I'm guessing that he gave up.

  • I'm a huge Sonic fan and I remember how disappointed I was when this was cancelled. But I have to say, maybe it was a good thing this never came out. Looks confusing, slow, and has poor level design. Interesting concept, but I don't think it would of worked out. At least he's finally back though. Sonic Colors was awesome and Generations looks to follow suit.

  • This game would look so godly on the 3ds.

  • If I were SEGA and I had a time machine, I'd use it to make this game come true.

  • Sonic X-Treme is a GEM!! It will haunt my Dreams full of pixels forever.. If SEGA could make it happen back then it would be a game that everyone will talk about through the AGES... I wonder if someone has a playable demo for SEGA Saturn...

  • it wouldve been cool to see tihs relesed back then

    probably wouldve saved the saturn

  • @SuperCOJO09 Yes, It's simple. Just search for the Sonic X-Treme beta ISO on google, it should come up within a few sites. Be warned though, it's just a simple, small pain that you can walk around on. :P

Youtube videos of it most likely exist, too.

  • I remember when my dad bought me the Sega Saturn when I was 5. I'm 18 now and I still have it. The Saturn rules! I have Sonic Jam but I wish I had this, too.

  • @horrorjunkie92 I recently found a Saturn at a pawn shop super cheap (15$!) I was wondering if you knew of a few good games I should invest in?

If you're willing to, you could get the leaked beta version of this game running on your Saturn. It's not very exciting though.

There is a project to get the PC version of this game built and working that's already pretty far along. You can check it out here:

tinyurl . com / 4alv5ds (Remove the spaces!)

  • @ClassicTeam So...the PC version they are working on, is their any news on it now? It's been since January since the last update and it looks great too

  • @ClassicTeam Leaked beta version? What's in it?

  • @Iceeman234 Not much... It's a large field that you can walk around, with some rings and birds. Can't really do anything in it.. :P

  • Someone needs to make a fangame of this. It will be exactly the same only on the computer. I think EVERYONE would download it. I know I would. I mean, the closest thing we're gonna get to Sonic X-treme right now is SRB2, and it's okay, but it isn't good enough.

  • This game looks, interesting?! I'd love to play it on the 3DS!!!!

  • I still hope this gets leaked one day. I wanna play it!

This game might've saved the Saturn.

  • @JoeyDrunko oh. i think you can download it and im pretty sure that someone copied the files and posted the game on yoyogames. :D

  • I seriously can not believe that people actually think that this game would of have been better than Sonic 4 and Sonic Colors. I hate to say it, but the work done for Sonic X-treme really does look like complete crap.

  • If SEGA Would've released this back then, I bet IGN with LOVE to give this a 10!

  • Sega should have used this as a blueprint for, oh, just about every 3D Sonic game in the past 12 years.

  • Sega found the fish eye unworkable? sega may not know this but we would all love to play this fish eye or not maybe they should think more about the fans :/

  • @nick5 It depends on the system really. Not many games machines would use wondows, so file extensions don't even come into it. for consoles built similarly, there won't be much work that needs to be done. Most games use C as the language to write the bulk of the code, and this is highly portable because compilers exist for many platforms. It is the system specific code that needs to be updated for the target machine

  • i realy wish that sega devlopers could remake sonic x-treme on the 3ds!

it's a nice time for the game to come back!

  • Wow, this game looks great, Sega really messed up by cancelling this game, it looks like it would of been an incredible game for Sonic fans, even for people who aren't Sonic Fans, and, who knows, it might of help the Saturn!

  • I would love to see Sonic Xtreme get resurrected as an Escherean 4D game made by Tetsuya Mizuguchi.

  • If Sega really knew what was good for them, they would commission the fellows that created this much of Sonic Xtreme and a current crew from Sonic Team to complete this unique and intriguing video gaming artifact for the Nintendo 3DS utilizing the 3D capability as much as possible. What a trip for the senses! So many fans would flock to purchase this. Fans and video game veterans alike. I speak the truth. Make it happen, Sega.

  • I still can't understand why they left this game and made the Sonic 3D Blast. If this game was cancelled because they wouldn't finish in time for their goal, why would they just finish on the next year? Sonic 3D Blast sucks.

  • If this game would have been released, Sega would probably have stayed relevant as a console company :(

  • @Glumglufs And we'd never get to see the epic showdown between Sonic and Mario (I'm referring to Brawl, but the Olympics were fun too...)

  • sega was always ahead of its time sux they never get the credit

  • I see an odd buzz-saw move at 0:07. Wonder what that could be?

  • I wish it had come out, I saw the highlight in Game Informer way back and I was all set to get it and then bam it's gone. :(

  • When I watch these videos, along all the others, they hurt. Sega were on to something with this game, it would have shaken alot of people and rocked the industry, in some ways I guess it already has. As far as Sonic Adventure goes, it was a good game but it was rushed and bulked up with pointless and horribly shitty sub stories of : amy, big ects. If they re structured Xtreme for the DS I'd be first in line down the shops...

  • Man this game had potential....just look at Mario Galaxy

  • Comment removed

  • I would've LOVED to play this game! Also, give this comment a thumbs up if you'd rather play this than most of the other Sonic games out today.

  • To SEGASONICSEVEN, that is an interesting theory! I've never played the Monkey Ball games, but I have seen them in action. I wonder if it's true. I'd love to get my hands on this game, finished or not.

  • I feel like Sonic Team was truly stepping outside the box on this game and were possibly leading onto something with this unique style of gameplay. It would be truly great if Sonic Team were to go back and finish their work with this and then remake it for the newer consoles. I like how they tried to venture outside of Sonic Universe we're all familiar with and attempt a newer one with this game. It's a damned shame that they pulled the plug on this one. It looks like it would have been great.

  • Sonic Team didn't make this game. Sonic Xtreme was designed in the US. Sonic Team had Nights, which was their "3D Sonic" in all but name, and it seemed they had left Sonic to Western developers at this time.

If memory serves, all the work for Sonic Xtreme may have been saved by some of the design team, which went through a very difficult time to make their game. At least one employee later claimed to have saved all the files, but other than that, everything from this game has been lost.

  • Just letting you know, the design team in question was Sega Technical Institute.

  • Is that so? I couldn't remember if STI was still around by that time. That would make sense, actually, given STI's involvement with Sonic 2 and Sonic Spinball.

  • Don't sweat it, folks. We got Sonic Adventure for Dreamcast. Sega redeemed itself.

I think Adventure was better than what this would have been.

  • anyone else think that this type of gameplay reminds me of super mario galaxy? sega would have been onto a winner with this if they made, even with the saturn doing poorly...

  • Hmmm.... Perhaps they got the idea of Super Monkey Ball from Sonic Xtreme...

  • Sega should...

    1.Postpone Needlemouse

    2.Finish this

3.Sell it on wiiware or XBLA

    this looks real fun

  • Project Needlemouse isn't Sega's work.

  • ...then whose making that?

  • It's a fan game, that I think has nothing to do with sonic.

  • Sonic Team is co-creating it with Dimps, who also worked on Unleashed, I think they did the day levels.

  • @Xeniczone

    No, It's Sonic 4.

  • @Xeniczone YEAH IT IS! Thats what sega first had for Sonic The Hedgehog. NOW STOP LIEING!

  • SEGA went through many ideas to get to Sonic The Hedgehog, Mr Needlemouse was just one of the concepts. Also why say to him stop lying? if he doesn't know then don't explode.. christ.

  • No, please, finish Needlemouse.

Plus, why the hell can't they make both at the same time?

No one should postpone Needlemouse for this

  • there needs to be a game in this generation that employs the fisheye lens. It looks pretty damn cool.

  • This would've totally changed the course of Sonic games I'm sure. Too bad it got canned and replaced with crappy 3D Blast...

  • 3d blast was quite good, but don't get me wrong NO replacement for this

  • I agree, sonic 3d blast sucked hard, and was a total dissapointment.

  • is there anywhere I can play a demo or where there is one for sale

  • this is great video man, this game would of made millions, they should release it now and still make money off it, but only if its on tehre own system

  • Thanks for insulting me even though I'm trying to be kind about this. -_-'

Nick, you seem like a smart guy, why do you have to argue with me?

    In any case, Blocked.

  • Actually, Ports do exist, but nothing can be just renamed from a, say, Nintendo 64 file to a Nintendo DS file and it magically works. The code has to be reworked, such as the resolution, camera handling, and usually code has to be rewritten for it to work.

And than theirs Ground-Up "ports", which is basically the same idea, except instead of majorly altering the code, they simply start over. Re-Build the game or Program.

if this argument continues I'll have to Block both you and XKaiminalX.

  • now i know where did nintendo get the super mario galaxy idea...

  • Comment removed

  • They should'nt bury Sonic, they should get a time machine, travel 10 years back in time and ask their past selfes, how to make a good 3d Sonic game.

  • lol music is somehow nice

  • sonic galaxy

  • tech demo fool, if it wasnt scrapped for Sonic 3D blast this probably would of actually hammered Mario 64

  • This demo proves that the engine and the tools have been in development for long time , which means that what you see is pretty much the final result without the "sauce".

This game has no "soul" , the gameplay logic is crap , there's insane amount of clipping and depth view/culling , which would f* up all your "Sonic Galaxy" wet dreams, because on saturn its not possible.

It has been canceled for a reason ;-).

  • Oh and before you start flaming : I was a HUGE Sega fan...untill around 2001 , now i just hate everything about this company.

I still enjoy my Saturn , but this Sonic game is just...garbage!

We're lucky that Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 released on DC , since they're the best 3d Sonic games to date.

  • @woahItsJimmy Oh yeah? And you think that Sonic 3D blast is better? It completely sucks. You mustn't be a true sonic fan because if you were, you wouldn't say this. The would have been better if they had spent more one year improving it.

  • @hitman23333 The guy in charge himself said it was pointless to continue:

    1. 1 more year wasn't enough time

    2. He beacame so obsessed with the game being perfect he litereally began dying from the stress

    3. Too often the game had to be scrapped, SEGA only lost money from this game, and even if it were released, it was likely that'd still have been the case

    4. I don't get why everyone hated 3D Blast... I wouldn't give it a medal or anything, but it was, and still is, fun

  • @PKtheHEDGEHOG Man, if the guy was tired of the game, sega should replaced him with another team, this game could't have stopped of being made. And i'm saying 3d blasts sucks because of the fucking birdies that complety ruined the game. Some way x-treme would be better than 3d blast.SEGA failed there...

  • @hitman23333 He didin't get tired of the game. He was diagnosed with a deadly sickness and had to take leave for a month. X-Treme had missed so many Christmases that SEGA shut the project down and handed the keys back to Naka, who than started developing Adventure. Replacing would have been pointless, by the time the game would be finished, the Dreamcast would be out. 3D Blast was reprogrammed in 6 months for the Saturn to make the Christmas season.

  • @hitman23333 Some of the footage above is from a PC version the programmer worked on after the cancellation of the Saturn project. It was almost finished, and he asked SEGA if they wanted to sell the game on PC. SEGA said no.

Years later, everything has been leaked - except for the code. A Few people are currently working on re-creating the lost code so that one day we can play the game as it was meant to be. But until than, we watch footage. :P

  • @ClassicTeam Yeah, that sucks. That's why i hate SEGA now, and the choice of not doing another console. Now i'm with playstation3.

  • @ClassicTeam I hope it gets released someday

  • @woahItsJimmy

You look way too boring. The gameplay is exciting! You zoom around on these circular things, jump on platforms, and run around in all sorts of fun and new worlds! It seems too advanced for the saturn! The gameplay is like an explosion of speed and awesomeness! It goes "Boom" and "BOOM!" all over your face!

  • Sooo...................Sonic did do this before Mario..............not surprised. Hey here's a project for everyone now im not trying to say or claim anything. But compare the boxart for Sonic Adventure for the dreamcast(not battle on gamecube) to the boxart of Metriod Prime 3 Corruption. LOL you'll be surprised. Coincidence......I think not. BTW don't get mad at me it's just a joke but check it out.

  • 1996 game =P

  • Why do all the good games get canceled? Vaporware..

    Someone's making a homebrew,but still..

I would love for Sega to finish this game, and put it on the Virtual Console,or maybe Wii-Ware.

  • wait...who is making a homebrew?

  • I heard some where that Nintendo actually had plans to put it on Virtual Console, but Sega refused to let them because they didn't want them to.

  • What is there to put? Sonic X-Treme was never really finished. The only "finished" version of Sonic X-Treme is the one Chris Senn developed for PC and got rejected by SEGA. Everything else consisted of ether 1 test stage or one completed zone... not enough for a Virtual console release.

  • That can't be true. The game was never actually finished.

  • Well actually, I also heard thatSega of America finished the game, but Yugi Naka didn't want them to release it because it used the Nights engine. Just keep in mind I'm not entirly sure of everything.

  • Actually, it was a Tech demo that they had completed, but it was the same result. Naka was too fond of Nights to let anyone tamper with it, even if it was for another one of his co-creations.

  • This game looks so fun..

  • I just so happen to have THIS game...

  • Hahaha sure!

  • Not lying. As a matter of fact, I could probably sell it.

  • If you really did it would be worth over $1000.

  • It's a backup.

And, I will prove it if you don't believe me.

  • Demonstrate anything you have to a trusted member in an unreleased video game community.

  • ... What?

How about I just post a video? I will even say your name.

  • If you have something extremely valuable and you want to show it you should show it to a trusted member of the community.

  • It's not very valuable. Considering there are a SHIT load of people who now own copies.

  • Oh you mean the early prototype for Sonic Xtreme. That is no big deal. Everybody is hopeful that we will 1 day see a release of a more advanced Sonic Xtreme demo. Especially 1 of the fish eye lens version.

  • What do you think the prototype version is? Fish eye lens.

  • If you have something hurry up and show it.

  • If you have a copy, you may want to contact Criss Senn about it, or maybe a trusted member of the Sonic Community. Assuming they can get proof, I know they would be willing to pitch in a couple hundred, exen thousands of dollars. (It's not unheard of - the community rased somewhere around $2000 before an unknown eBay buyer came in at the last moment and out bid them.)

  • Are you on about the tec demo or the fisheye version?

Anyone who has the fisheye version should share it ASAP so it can be played or finished by the modding community. I wanna know where all these video clips came from?

  • I spent a great deal of time digging for these videos quite a few years ago. But these days Criss Senn has made it easy, with his website, Sonic Xtreme Compendium. You'll find a lot of information there. Just do a quick google search and have fun. :)

  • Some really good programer shood look at all the screenshots and videos and remake this game and good or sega should wise up and release it

  • They need to remake this game.

  • I agree, the bad thing is people who never heard about this game will think that they're are ripping off Mario Galaxy. I wish they remade this but Mario fanboys would go beserk.

  • Actually... I'm a Mario fan myself and I loved Galaxy (and I'm looking forward to 2). With that said, I played Galaxy way before I even heard of this game, yet I could see back then that this game wasn't a ripoff or anything like that. I'd actually be pretty happy if they remade the game and released it.

  • This Game would look alot better on the wii Virtual Console and Xbox Live, but the female character of this game should be removed! after i saw her gameplay it reminded of tails' gameplay in Sonic 3

  • Super Mario 64 DS wasn't a port. It was remade from the ground up for the DS.

The Saturn had a frighteningly complex architecture that limited its potential. It's not possible to just dump a port onto another console. Each console has a unique internal organization, with certain strengths and weaknesses.

Also, looking at your little feud with XKaiminalX, it's apparent you have the argumentative capacity of an agitated chimp.

  • This game was tied to the fate of the Saturn. I wonder what would have happened for Sega's 32-bit generation if they had a Sonic title. Sections of this game look really ahead of their time. 3D Sonic as we know it would have changed as well.

  • I bet if they finished this it would be 2 times as epic.

  • The theme tune is awesome lol, cant get it out of my head now

  • Actually TBH, the jerky controls, anti-gravity, cube-shaped worlds and disorienting camera makes me glad this didn't happen.

But that doesn't mean it isn't an interesting concept. It's interesting, all right... but just too confusing for a Sonic game IMO.

  • 5:36 - 5:43

That would be something else for gamers back then, since it still looks awesome even now.

  • hell yea....i mean it looks crazy and some parts a bit broken...but you go back 13+ years in time and you might have had the most revolutionary game EVER

we would be talking about sonic changing the landscape of gaming not mario

not dissing mario but i just HATE what sega has but out when this could been great

  • To be honest, I think I'd throw upplaying this game, but it would have to be the first enjoyable vomit session if I ever had the chance to play it.

  • Yeah, it's a bit disorienting at times, but the general idea is pretty cool. They should update it and put it on Virtual Console and XBox Live and whatever consoles where you can download old games. It would rock.

  • I admit I find it quite disorientating to watch, but maybe playing it and having control of what happens on screen would make it a bit less nauseating. Shame this game never came to fruition.

  • the gravity thing reminds me of super mario galaxy

  • Sonic Adventure was incredible, but if Sonic had spun into 3D THIS way, I'd be in heaven.

  • The fish eye lens could've totally changed the way we play 3D games today...

...unless it caused severed nausea for gamers, then it would've been inconsequential.

  • i played a rom version and this truely is the greatest sonic game ever. and i only played 60% of a level

  • could anyone tell me what song is used in this video?

  • The song is called Space Queens. One of the developers, Chris Senn, of Sonic Xtreme created it as concept music for the game.

  • This would have saved Sonic if it came out.

  • Sonic wasn't failing back in 1996.

  • I know, but he is now becouse he didn't combat Super Mario 64, which is now one of the most famous games ever.

  • you got pretty good point because sonic games did'nt put much of fight around the that time because sonic's first game on the saturn was

    3d blast which sucked.

  • Yeah but Sonic didnt have to combat Mario 64. Sonic Adventure kicked ass and even if there was another good sonic game in 1996, it wouldnt stop this current run of mediocre games

  • we are talking 1996 not 1999, there where only 3 sonic games released on the saturn sonic 3d blast, sonic r and sonic jam against super mario 64, mario kart 64, mario golf, mario party 1,2 and super smash bros.

  • SonicTheHedgeHogZone super smash bros was made in 1999 not 1996

  • i never said that im just listing some games mario had on the n64 compared to sonic on sega saturn.

  • You know, i don't think it would have turned out to be a hit, as it seemed to had been planned. Rather a typical side-story Sonic game.

  • ya know someone has (or had) the original knights virsion? If still exist then mabe he could make a rom or somethin

  • Copyright 1995 my good sir

  • Amazing how similar Mario Galaxy looks compared to this. Sonic was way ahead of the game, too bad it was canceled.

  • nintendo copied the technology for galaxy

  • No they didn't compare the evidence, this was made in 1996, the only reason this is looks spherical was because of the camera lense, Nintendo made Galkaxy between 06 and 08 i assume, and they made planets.. How is that the same?

  • I wouldn't go as far as saying they copied them, but I can definitely see some similarities.

  • Its funny how your getting so stressy out this.

  • Look at the very start of this convosation, you moaned about them not releasing this game, yet SEGA have not got the PC version, because they didn't know about it. Chris and Ofer arn't allowed to work on it or release it due to its made by SEGA Software.

  • Actually it does, your complaining about it not being released, yet you don't know why, I'm trying to make the point don't complain about it, because its not worth it.

  • See, your avoiding the point, you can sit there and moan about SEGA not releasing it, But you don't know why it wasn't released.

  • Well my knowledge doesn't consist of what camera angle this game has, my knowledge of this game is more about the history of it.

  • Your dodging my question, do you know why this game was never released? Also i don't care, everyone is different. The word Fanboy is just an excuse for people to hide behind.

  • And do you know why this game isn't released? SEGA not making anymore good games, well thats your own opinion to be honest, also your the one moaning and shouting about it.

  • Now your making a big deal out of nothing, ok then answer me this why would SEGA want to release a game that almost killed 2 people, made a company close down and basically failed due to how bad the politics were at SEGA?

  • i almost got this game :D

    just a few hours left

  • Your getting the 718 Demo which is basically nothing except 50 rings 2 rivers and alot of weird moving hills.

  • Sorry, i misread. You never made things easy to read because you throw everything together. I understand you want it released but there is no point to releasing it.

  • Excuse me, but my facts/information are true because i got most of them from one of the designers (Chris Senn) He keeps alot of details quiet because hes not allowed to or out of respect.

  • Fuwad84 is probably the realist dude here, he knows whats going on.. reppin SEGA!!!

  • They can't under the contract of SEGA, all the software created and made at that time is copyrighted by SEGA so they'd get a lawsuit if they did or a cease and disist. I know what a port is, its were you tweak a game already created into something is or something like that. Also how does that matter to anything? you have no idea who i am.

  • I know why they are not releasing the demos, and its for a very good reason which i shall explain later. Also good for you? I know more about this game than you do.

  • The Saturn version was barely playable, the PC version is gone only 2 people have it and refuse to release it, The NiGHTS version is the closest thing to Sonic X-treme you can get.

  • There is nothing to port.

  • This isn't the Saturn version though, this is the PC version. There is no official data on the original Saturn version.

  • The N64 is more powerful than the Saturn in bit power, but nothing else when pushing the Saturn to its full limits it was more powerful. Also i've spoken to the guy who made this, hes not officially allowed to work on the game or release anything unless SEGA allows him.

  • The SEGA Saturn was a very hard console to work with, its virtually impossible to port its games to the DS when the Saturn is more powerful than the DS.

  • There is no engine or game to port to the DS, plus the SEGA Saturn is more powerful than the Nintendo DS. Nothing was finished.

  • You do know that this engine was later used for the Saturn game Bug!, i mean just compare the two....honestly I've been a sega fan all my life but it wasnt untill i played Mario 64 that I said "SHIT I MISSED OUT"

  • Actually it wasn't, Bug was made before this.

  • NO actually Sonic Xtreme's devolopment and conceptualization goes all the back to the Genesis days LONG BEFORE Mario 64 - it was never meant to be a FULL 3D game persay just a dimension shifting fish eye platform 3Dish game at first on the Genesis and than later on on the 32x - remember the 3D bonus rounds in Sonic 3 and Knuckles - they were more or less built off of that - man its sooo awesome to be having this debate with another Die hard sega fan!

  • The fish eye format never came in until Chris and Ofer made their version. Also i already knew about X-tremes Genesis/Megadrive and 32X history.

  • i used to think sonic xtreme looked sweet, but the more videos i see of it, the more shitty it looks. it looks like sonic is constantly running on ice and his jump is broken.

  • It wasn't even finish, thats more of a tech demo. In the end the Saturn version was barely playable.

  • this game reminds me of Super Mario Galaxy

  • what would had hapened to sonic and sega if this came out...some games might never had existed if this game came out

  • IN JAPAN;

SEGA FUCKING OWN JAPAN, Shenmue kicks the shit out of Playstation, overall PSX just outsells Saturn still, Top selling Saturn game Shenmue then Virtua Fighter 3, outsells Tekken

  • Shenmue didn't come out on the Saturn, even though it was intended to.

  • read the 1st line on my comment underneath..
