The people who are hitting themselves, this is symbolic of something right. If you are going to call it barbaric and such at least explain to people why these individuals are seen slapping their backs with metal chains...When the Shia's imam Ali was asssassinated in kufa, the Kufans in Iraq did not come to his rescue so Shia's now carry out this practice as a symbolic metaphor meaning the Kufans should bear shame or pain for betraying Imam Ali.

I miss the smoke and the smell of ashura in iran!! wish i was there.. and the kids and everyone else choose to attend ashura, i've lived there for 12 years, i was a kid too, and we all loved that time of the year! when we heard the drumset at night, we'd run out with our friends to watch.. thats all the entertainment people got in iran, and u cant blame em for it.. i hate the government also, but things like this has nottin to do with them!

It has nothing to do with Islam but people do it as a sense of cultural identity. And just because the Quran doesn't talk about it doesn't mean it's not allowed. @KurlandHickory What does fire have to do with ashura? There is no fire jumping during Ashura. Fire jumping is 4-shambe sore and it is pre-Islamic and Zoroastrian and has nothing to do with animal sacrifices. What the hell does it have to do with Ashura? Absolutely nothing.
