Two of the best film critics that have ever lived. I still don't get all the hate on Ebert. Yeah, he isn't the best looking man on the planet, and yeah you may not agree with his views on some films, but at least he lets people have an opinion unlike some other critics that I've read.
@bucky468, how's the title misleading? The film has nothing to do with hunting because his last name is hunting you fucking idiot. Who cares what Ted Nugent thinks anyway, great rocker but a fucking nut case!
"The Dearhunter" smokes this flick by a landslide. At least that movie had some hunting in it. This flick had anything but hunting in it. Therefore the title is very misleading. I can see why the NRA gave it an instant thumbs down.
@666danielclark666 No. "Dearhunter" kicks ass!! And no, I'm NOT kidding. In the eyes of the NRA, any flick w/the word hunting in the title better have some REAL hunting in it or else NRA celebs from Hollyweird will get pissed off right away. This one didn't & the NRA hates Matt Damon & Ben Affleck (liberal pussies) for creating it.
The NRA & Ted Nugent hated this flick. It's called "Good Will Hunting" but it doesn't have a damn thing to do w/hunting. Hunting what? Snipe hunting? And it stars 2 maybe 3 actors who are pro-gun control in Matt Damon, Ben Affleck & Robin Williams. Charlton Heston almost didn't wanna be a part of the 70 greatest actors in the history of the Academy Awards b/c he hated this flick so much. Only liberal pro-gun control pussies like shit flicks like this one.
@SpikeMichaels I'll take the latter as a compliment. No I wasn't being sarcastic. I was being dead serious. You should've heard Nugent when he had his own radio talk show. He hates this flick. His on-air rant is totally classic about GWH. I was also serious about Heston. He hated it too. Hell, all NRA celebs (dead or alive) detest this film. Can't say I blame them.
@bucky468 Your posts are lazy. They're not based on anything and are completely irrelevant to the movie. It's the equivalent of going to Silence of the Lambs review and pretending to be a memeber of PETA while complaining about animal cruelty. Has nothing to do with the movie. Just lame.
@CoolerKing37 I don't think you even know what you're talking about. When I see the word hunting in the title of a flick I'd better see some real hunting - guns & all.
A likeable movie, and Robin Williams is just awesome in it, but I could never get past the overly unrealistic "Superman" element of the story. If he had simply been a very smart kid with a lot of unused potential I would have liked it a lot more. But they went too silly Hollywood when they gave him this superhuman mathematical ability. Oh and he can also remember every book he's ever read. Probably has a great curveball, too! No doubt the popcorn eaters loved it, but it was over the top for me.
Good film, but it started a whole series of bad-Boston-accent movies. You heaa me Scawsayzeee!... None worse than that gaaabage... Why the HELL did DiCaprio call for backup? He knew the force was corrupted?
It's like hello, the fact that you said I'm smarter and better than everyone else contradicts the fact that you're saying I'm supposed to be like everyone else and think like everyone else. But I guess that's stupid people for you.
This movie ripped me off. I always hate it though when people tell me to realize my potential and all of that junk. Like don't they know I'm the way I am BECAUSE I'm smart. If I wasn't I would be just like them. The point in life is to stop and smell the roses not every once in a while, but all the time, every day. I actually stopped and thought about going to college and realized it was the wrong decision for me instead of mindlessly getting a career, starting a family, doing the expected.
@Ekit357 I know! It's really kind of disgusting how people are like "Haha! You're dying of cancer!" just because he gave thumbs down to movies they liked.
@burrowsshreds I figured that is what you meant. Yeah I never agreed with his review of FMJ. I disagree with Ebert on many movies but I love his sense of humor and articulation. He's just plain interesting (as was Gene).
this movie just was good in its own right, but seems to be a bit of a rip off of ordinary people to be; which is a much better film all over; Damon character is so unrealistic, a nerd and a streetfighter with great looks and charms women
Ordinary People? I don't know where you see that.
Besides, there isn't one truly jaw-droppingly magnificent or extraordinary character / performance in Ordinary People. Not like Robin Williams as Sean in Good Will Hunting. If for no other performance, I will be happy if Robin is remembered for this film.
Take the scene where Sean corners Damon's Will and says repeatedly, "It's not your fault." It moves me every time I see it.
@trha2222 the fact htat you focus on one line like that shows that your opinions on movies are not to be taken seriously. You were looking atthe movie from the standpoint of a high school freshman...and immature one.
@knickknack07 No, I was looking at it from an entertainment standpoint. It was ridiculous. Stupid. Brainless. This is a film that has no emotional power whatsoever. This is a film for people who need to be told what is 'powerful'. This is a film that tries too hard and it fails. Not many people are going to be looking back at this film 50 years from now and saying WOW. They will be too busy yawning at it.
Sure, GWH has a predictable story arc, but everything from the writing, directing, and acting is fantastic. It's so good and honest that it feels real. I wish Damon/Affleck would write movies this great. And anyone who doubts Williams' acting ability should definitely watch this movie.
@ThePhantom135 Agreed. Another obvious great Robin Williams film is "Dead Poets Society." I haven't seen this yet, but from this and the trailer, it looks like it's one of his best films
@themenaceanish You are so right. I can imagine who would take the advice of the rotting putrid turd Roger Ebert when that failed sleaze writer pontificates on movies.
@concussedcarneous It's a movie. Just like Superman was a movie. Not every movie has to be totally realistic. Movies are one of the ways we can see something that we could never see anywhere else. There are people like this. You see some people who are burnouts, but when you look inside of them you see something that not too many people have. I have plenty of friends like that. Not to this extent, but to an extent nonetheless.
@Liisha2theMoon You've completely misinterpreted Siskel's comment-it was a compliment to Robin-learn how to read before you comment, idiot. He was referring to the role in Flubber-while saying how impressed he is with Williams in this movie. And your comment about Siskel is beyond disgusting.
Good Will Hunting is a FANTASTIC movie, seriously one of the greatest movies of all-time. It gets almost everything right. It's so intelligently written, major kudos to Damon and Affleck for that, it avoids many cliches and in-fact purposely turns some on their head, the characters are very well written and both Damon and Williams play their roles superbly. Williams brings such a warmth and this sort of... lump-to-throat father quality to it and other roles too. Superb actor.
that scene in the beginning between robin williams and matt damon is so amazing. just because you've read a bunch of books or have a bunch of degrees doesn't mean you know an actual person who is going through any situation. you can quote Shakespeare, Dickens, or anyone else, but that doesn't mean you know what a person whose actually experiencing loss is actually going through unless they tell u or show u.
@xaxie1 Death happened. Siskel died, Disney changed the format of the show. They likely made a copyright infringement claim as well, so youtube pulled the vids.

I hate how movie reviewers (not so much now, i mean not SO much) are always saying "this years such and such" like the bald man just did at the beginning of this review. Its like they have to compare so as to be lazy.
@jgplummer Actually, some of my teachers love it. If I was to only like movies that reflected cultures similar to mine... well, I would be in trouble. The reasons I disliked this movie were:
- horrible depiction of psychotherapy (when everybody gave up on Matt Damon's character)
- the argument that one can learn on their own, and then the guy goes on and disproves himself by just quoting a shitload of basic authors and texts, instead of using his own arguments
Nitpicking, is that really enough to call it a "terrible" film? Your first example took up about 2 minutes of the actual movie. Go clown on some Transformers.
@LumpyAdams If the movie is terrible from its premise and doesn't pretend to be anything more than a load of "entertaining" (sarcasm) crap, I don't even bother to ask myself if it makes sense (or watch it for that matter). Moreso, while the things I described might have comprised a significantly small part of the movie, they were key elements that resulted in the development of the rest of the plot (ie: the WRONG depiction of psychotherapists giving up on Will led to Robbin Williams seeing him).
@jgplummer It's late and I'm tired, and I seem to have blocked some other scenes from the movie, so I don't really remember all of the things I disliked in order to make a proper argument. I just remember being disappointed by a movie I'd been really looking forward to watching.
