Hey it was not acceptable to be racist then or now but let me try to explain the difference. When they made shows back then they used television and movies to express racism while most people kept it hidden ecept around people they know. Today people are more prone to outwardly disply racism while television keeps it hidden except when the cameras aren't rolling.
I've long since held the belief that this generation's ridiculously thin skin and propensity to pull the race card is what gives racism the power it has today. A fear of offending someone of another race can lead to outright avoidance or alienation from that race. When this cartoon was made, America was different at that period in history. The Japanese culture also used racist propaganda cartoons as well as the Britons, Germans and Russians for swaying their populations beliefs towards whomever at that time was against them. However you view this ,. it is history.

I suspect that the japanese internment camps were probably just as much for their own protection, the unthinking populace is prone to reactionary backlash.
"War is hell" and both sides have blood on their hands, the japanese prisoner of war camps were not exactly nice places.
I am inclined to think the atomic bomb saved more lives than it took, and isnt war itself a "crime against humanity"?

The indiscriminate targeting & kiling of civilians in a war zone is a war crime; the bombing wasn't done to save lives as the Japanese Govt already made concrete steps for peace & the US rejected them. They had no food, oil or other supplies & wanted to surrender before Russians invaded
Americans hate Arabs. SO shoud they be put in concentration camps for their 'own survival'? Evn th US apologised for this crime & compnsated the victims. There was no justification for it.

the cartoon is "bugs bunny nips the nips" &its on youtube.
Its an anti-Japanese cartoon & uses the stereotypes: stupid, big teerh, glasses etc. But it goes further w/ WHAT they do to them. Also, shows the US as victims - they weren't.
This sort of racism excused the concentration camps in US. Google "Year 501" on reason for the war. Like I said, this needs to be in context to make sense. But its racist.

There were many examples against blacks, asians, Indians etc. most trivialised the harm that was done to them undr the law. Thre's a good documentary on here called "rasim in America. Who kept it alive?" its done by scholars (unlike this video) & it interesting to see how much racism is in books/film

The major crimes of genocide were finished yrs before 1941; it was only when Japanese refused to allow the US access to those marketsthat there was a problem. The Japanese wantd access to US colonies in Philipines, Haiti, Puerto Rico & Cuba but the US said no. & how many did the US kill to get those colonies of its own?
Anyway, the US didn't care that 10-13 million Chinese were killed; they only cared about making profits. Othrwise, why wait 5 yrs to do something?

We were at war with the Japanese when the cartoon was made, and EVERYBODY was xenophobic and semi-racist in the 1940s.

I agree it was a "different" culture, but showing how it was is important to show hopefully how we "evolved" or became more sensitive to various peoples, the cartoons reflected the attitude back then the sad thing there are many that still feel the same way, just hide it better, I moved to kentucky from the great lakes via the west coast and discovered the most sad idiocy, people still think they are in the 19th centuary

the thing about racism though, is that if black actors thought that the materiel was racist, then they wouldn't play the role would they, but they did. In my opinion the black actor represents the black community when it comes to acting. Example, 'Love Thy Neighbour' ihn the 1970's, if the main black actors thought that their roles were racist, then they wouldn't have played them. This just shows the age of over-exaggerated racism-spreaders
