I always wondered what would have happened if I didn't get my horse when I did. I got her from a horse broker and I wondered if someone would have bought her and taken her to a slaughter house if I hadn't gotten her when I did.

Great video! I really hope that horse slaughter comes to an end!!! It's terrible, and I'm a horse lover, so I really care about this kinda thing! I want slaughter to end! A lot of epople don't realize how bad it is! It's really heart breaking to see these magnificent animals suffer like this! And not just horses! Animals don't disurve this kinda thing! They don't disurve to die this way! And, whatever owner who let's this happen to their horse is just plane cruel, and heartless! We need to help!
we saved our race horse he was called Golden Wing and he is beautiful the owners didnt tell us he was in horrible condision and the story from him was. he was going for a practice run and hurt his back to were he had a hard time walking then wen we got him all he was was skin and bones and he was going to head to horse slaughter house and when i first saw him all i could do was cry it made me so mad at those people who neglected him his name is beauty and he is beautiful now and loves to run

Now they are being sent to Canada and Mexico...but many of them are being saved by rescues and given a second chance at just being someone's pet, or learning new careers. Many former racehorses have learned to become jumpers or other equestrian sports like dressage or show horses. Thanks for commenting!

They were saved by a rescue. I'm not sure where they ended up, but hopefully a good home. That's sad about your mare. I hope she can recover from her loss. And that's very admirable to save so many horses. The world needs more people like you!

I can't believe they slaughter foals...it's not just old, mean/untrainable horses that go to slaughter, as pro-slaughter people would have you believe. Pregnant mares, young, healthy horses, stolen horses, people who were deceived into thinking they were selling their horse to a trusthworthy person...it's disgusting!

The most effective way is to contact your senators & congressmen/women. Tell them that you would appreciate it if they would be supportive of any legislation that would end horse slaughter. There are groups that are pretty organized as far as letter writing campaigns go & getting the media involved. If you want to know more, send me a message & I will direct you to 1 of those groups. The best thing to do though is tell people about it! Not many people know what is involved & the inhumanity of it

I agree. There has to be something psychologically wrong with a person that can look a horse in the eye, and then slit their throat. How do they live with themselves? Go home to their kids? People like that probably don't have families because they are incapable of having feelings!
True. I should clarify that it's mostly france, Belgium, and some places in Italy. I had a friend from England who got mad if you classified England as being part of Europe, so I stopped considering it a "European country" because I thought that's how all of the Brits felt (even though I always had considered it as such before). I know in England, the horse is an important part of sports and hunting, so they consider them pets, not food.

haha, good point. I just saw on the local news that some dogs were shot by an unknown person. The owners and their dogs were walking on the property and they heard someone yell "get off my property" and when the owners tried to call their dogs back, they heard someone yell "shoot the dogs" and they did. One died, 2 are in serious condition. They weren't hurting anything, and weren't given any warning. It's murder as far as I'm concerned.

Actually it's the truth. These are horses that have been saved from feedlots or bought at horse auctions by outbidding kill buyers. I'd be happy to share info about slaughter. I have seen video from inside a slaughterhouse and pictures of injured horses coming off the trailer. And not that it's any of your business, but I've donated probably close to $1000 in the last year to pull horses from slaughter. I'm part of a group of people who've raised approx $850,000 and saved over 2100 horses.

i understand where you are coming from, but horses are a much smaller scalle problem, when you see lambs getting exported to NEW ZEALAND from england - thousands and thousands. we should concentrate on live export being stopped. that is wher the real cruelty is - in england slaughter houses are controlled by vets (unlike most, i have spent time in them) its when they are exported and killed in other countries with lower welfare that i have a problem.
Wow, that's a long trip. And you're right, very inhumane. In the US, the only slaughter houses that are regulated are the ones that process meat that is to be consumed here. Since we don't eat horses, it's not regulated and very bad for the environment (blood and waste getting into the water supply of the local towns).
i am not against slaughter of any animal, including horses ( i dont eat it though), as i am an omnivore. as long as they dont have to travel long to slaughter, are treated well and are slaughtered in a humane way i dont see a problem.
Now that horse slaughter houses are closed in the US, horses are being shipped to Canada and Mexico and the trip is less humane (long, no food, no water, crammed in a double decker trailers) and the method, cruel. In Mex, they are stabbed repeatedly until their spine is severed, so they are aware of every moment of pain. I think slaughter is sad for all animals, but some animals are meant to be eaten. Horses are pets, not livestock in my opinion. I wouldn't eat my dog, so I wouldn't eat a horse!

It's like in mexico what they do instead of like shipping the meat off they grind it up and mix it with beef and feed it to their workers. Yeah, they are being slaughtered for meat so people in Europe and Asia can eat it. Little do they know that the meat is full of medicines and vaccinations that are given to the horse while it is racing or someone's pet and these medications are not meant to be given to animals that are to be consumed. So they're eating horsemeat with stuff in it that can cause cancer or other illnesses!

No, it's not humane at all. They are transported in crammed conditions for days with no food or water. Then they have to listen to the cries of the horses ahead of them being slaughtered, and they are shot in the head with a thing called a captive bolt that is supposed to make them unconscious, but most of the time, misses it's mark because they are thrashing around since they're scared, so they end up being hung up by one leg and having their throats slit while still conscious.
No, not all ex-racers end up at slaughter, some are adopted or end up in thoroughbred retirement farms. And it's not just racers. They have horse auctions where people sell their horses and alot of times people buy them for cheap and then sell them to slaughter houses because they get paid by the pound. Some unsuspecting people are tricked into selling their pets to these killer buyers because they think their companion is going to a good home. It's all very sad.

People have been trying to end it for many years, but now thanks to Fans of Barbaro, it's closer than ever to being made illegal. We've already shut down all the foreign owned horse slaughter houses in the US. Now we just need to end the transport of horses to Canada and Mexico to be killed there.

i love horses, they are pretty much my life, I checked for news on Barbaro at least once a day. But people are so naive, there are so many 'wild' horses, no one knows what to do with them all. And with slaughter plants out of operation, what do you do with unwanted horses? People are now just turning them lose which makes the overpopulation worse.
America is loving it's wild horses to death because we can't accept the idea of horse slaughter. I would rather be slaughtered then starve to death..
I think that if you can no longer take care of a horse, you either sell it, or do what people do to unwanted dogs and cats that end up in shelters, HUMANELY euthanize them, not butcher them while they're still awake and aware or force them to travel in horrible conditions (too cramped, no food or water). My point is, slaughter isn't the only option for unwanted horses.
I agree.. there are other options such as adoption and birth control, but that is for mustangs. What about horses that have no place to go and miserable and crippled??? With no slaughter plants and no one that wants them they waste away in an unsanitary auction barns. Slaughter plants are not all mean and cruel, they can be quite humane... and at the moment foundations that are trying to save horses have no more room for the unwanted ones...

Yeah I know how you feel. They say that they only slaughter horses who are sick (who'd want to eat a sick horse?), old, or dangerous. I see alot of pictures of healthy, gentle horses going to slaughter. Some are even babies. They say w/o slaughter, more horses will be neglected and abused. That's bulls***. There is a bill that would end it, but that pervert, disgrace of a senator, Larry Craig, is delaying it. He's not even running for re-election (it's easier to get away with trying to have sex with strangers in airport bathrooms when you're not a US senator...it doesn't make the news then!) so why does he care whether or not S.311 passes? I have rescued over 200 horses a year from slaughter. and no matter how many I save, its a shock everytime. I dont understand how people can send horses to the worst death sentence possible. The Horses that carried our troops through battle and they risked their lives for us! And this is how we repay their sons and daughters!Barbaro wasnt sent to slaughter,and Im glad he wasnt! I do horse rescue and there is a HUGE surplus of unwanted horses! It is a very sad reality but the humane thing to do is put some of these horses down and end their suffering. Disposal then becomes an issue so we should be enforcing humane treatment on the way to slaughter and humane destruction. I see neglected and abused horses every day, I wish there was a better solution!
Slaughter is a sad necessity. There are too many old, unsound or unwanted horses. Not enough people are willing or able to care for the surplus. Banning slaughter will force a very long and uncomfortable trip to less humane Mexico or Canada. What we should fight for is Humane treatment of all animals on the way to slaughter as well as quick and humane destruction. People should fully educate themselves from every angle of the issue.
I am fully educated on it. The conditions they travel to the slaughter houses in the States are just as inhumane as when they're shipped to Canada and Mexico. The method of slaughter is not humane euthanization for old horses. Young horses are victims too. Sometimes, they're still conscious when their thoats are slit open. There is no such thing as "humane slaughter." The only humane death is euthanization, which is much more preferable to slaughter. There are other options.
And the "surplus" is non existant. Research has proven that. When CA banned transporting horses to slaughter or when Cavel shut down due to fire a few years ago, there was no rise in the horse population or horses being abandoned as the pro-slaughter side predicted. Owners and breeders need to be more responsible. Rescues are willing to take in the horses, but they're competing with killer buyers at auctions who are only interested in making money from the slaughterhouses.
People DO need to be more educated on every angle, but it's the the pro-slaughter side who are not educated, nor are they open minded enough to think of other solutions. This isn't just about "aww, they're killing horses" it's about providing a dignified death to an animal that this country owes a great deal of it's history to.
In the US, horses were killed via a captive bolt to the head. it left them braindead, so honestly who cares what they do to them after? yes I love horses and I don't like slaughter, but it is, as NPR1212 said, a sad necessity.
Scared horses don't stand still. Captive bolts don't always hit their mark the first time when a horse is thrashing around. Many horses are still conscious when they're strung up by their leg and have their throats slit.
and shooting a horse is actually just as humane as euthanizing them..just not as pretty. It's actually easier, too. One shot to the head and they're gone. Otherwise, it's basically an overdose of medication. Needles slip or dosages are miscalculated, and the horse is left suffering until they're finally correctly euthanized. Is that really how you want them to go??
OH my, poor horses! Horse racing is so cruel! It killed Barbaro too! and just imagine how many unwanted horses from the racing industry are sent to slaughter.....

So what do we do with all of those horses that no one wants, the horse sanctuaries will eventually fill up. People need to stop breeding horses and that will eliminate the unwanted horses. To many horses are bred that should gelded(males) or not bred(mares)

mi pony that i now own and have owned for 4 years and not guna sell her eva or mi otha pony but year mi 1st pony was sent to a auction nd those hu wernt sold were sent 2 slaughter she got sold 4 $100 then abused nd now has issues with files,worming ,vets
but after having her 4 4 years we have worked through her fears of ropes ,men , we can do her feet or we no 2 farriers that can and she comes over 2 us now and doesnt take up 2 3 hours 2 catch

Great video! I really hope that horse slaughter comes to an end!!! It's terrible, and I'm a horse lover, so I really care about this kinda thing! I want slaughter to end! A lot of epople don't realize how bad it is! It's really heart breaking to see these magnificent animals suffer like this! And not just horses! Animals don't disurve this kinda thing! They don't disurve to die this way! And, whatever owner who let's this happen to their horse is just plane cruel, and heartless! We need to help!

we saved our race horse he was called Golden Wing and he is beautiful the owners didnt tell us he was in horrible condision and the story from him was. he was going for a practice run and hurt his back to were he had a hard time walking then wen we got him all he was was skin and bones and he was going to head to horse slaughter house and when i first saw him all i could do was cry it made me so mad at those people who neglected him his name is beauty and he is beautiful now and loves to run

Now they are being sent to Canada and Mexico...but many of them are being saved by rescues and given a second chance at just being someone's pet, or learning new careers. Many former racehorses have learned to become jumpers or other equestrian sports like dressage or show horses. Thanks for commenting!

They were saved by a rescue. I'm not sure where they ended up, but hopefully a good home. That's sad about your mare. I hope she can recover from her loss. And that's very admirable to save so many horses. The world needs more people like you!

No, Barbaro wasn't slaughtered, but after his death, his owners brought attention to horse slaughter and his fans all came together to try and end it...and soon, we will!
I can't believe they slaughter foals...it's not just old, mean/untrainable horses that go to slaughter, as pro-slaughter people would have you believe. Pregnant mares, young, healthy horses, stolen horses, people who were deceived into thinking they were selling their horse to a trusthworthy person...it's disgusting!

The most effective way is to contact your senators & congressmen/women. Tell them that you would appreciate it if they would be supportive of any legislation that would end horse slaughter. There are groups that are pretty organized as far as letter writing campaigns go & getting the media involved. If you want to know more, send me a message & I will direct you to 1 of those groups. The best thing to do though is tell people about it! Not many people know what is involved & the inhumanity of it

I agree. There has to be something psychologically wrong with a person that can look a horse in the eye, and then slit their throat. How do they live with themselves? Go home to their kids? People like that probably don't have families because they are incapable of having feelings!

True. I should clarify that it's mostly france, Belgium, and some places in Italy. I had a friend from England who got mad if you classified England as being part of Europe, so I stopped considering it a "European country" because I thought that's how all of the Brits felt (even though I always had considered it as such before). I know in England, the horse is an important part of sports and hunting, so they consider them pets, not food.

haha, good point. I just saw on the local news that some dogs were shot by an unknown person. The owners and their dogs were walking on the property and they heard someone yell "get off my property" and when the owners tried to call their dogs back, they heard someone yell "shoot the dogs" and they did. One died, 2 are in serious condition. They weren't hurting anything, and weren't given any warning. It's murder as far as I'm concerned.

Actually it's the truth. These are horses that have been saved from feedlots or bought at horse auctions by outbidding kill buyers. I'd be happy to share info about slaughter. I have seen video from inside a slaughterhouse and pictures of injured horses coming off the trailer. And not that it's any of your business, but I've donated probably close to $1000 in the last year to pull horses from slaughter. I'm part of a group of people who've raised approx $850,000 and saved over 2100 horses.

i understand where you are coming from, but horses are a much smaller scalle problem, when you see lambs getting exported to NEW ZEALAND from england - thousands and thousands. we should concentrate on live export being stopped. that is wher the real cruelty is - in england slaughter houses are controlled by vets (unlike most, i have spent time in them) its when they are exported and killed in other countries with lower welfare that i have a problem.

Wow, that's a long trip. And you're right, very inhumane. In the US, the only slaughter houses that are regulated are the ones that process meat that is to be consumed here. Since we don't eat horses, it's not regulated and very bad for the environment (blood and waste getting into the water supply of the local towns).

i am not against slaughter of any animal, including horses ( i dont eat it though), as i am an omnivore. as long as they dont have to travel long to slaughter, are treated well and are slaughtered in a humane way i dont see a problem.

Now that horse slaughter houses are closed in the US, horses are being shipped to Canada and Mexico and the trip is less humane (long, no food, no water, crammed in a double decker trailers) and the method, cruel. In Mex, they are stabbed repeatedly until their spine is severed, so they are aware of every moment of pain. I think slaughter is sad for all animals, but some animals are meant to be eaten. Horses are pets, not livestock in my opinion. I wouldn't eat my dog, so I wouldn't eat a horse!

It's like in mexico what they do instead of like shipping the meat off they grind it up and mix it with beef and feed it to their workers. They could be eating the horse they killed like two hrs before it's so gut renching how someone could do this to a poor little horse and I bet you that the slaughter house workers have no pets and don't care about other living things cause you'd have to have a black HEART to do this to a beautiful racehorse like Ferdinand who got sent to slaughter.:(

I got to beat about a hundred horses over the head and stab them while they screamed in pain...do you think you can get these blood stains out of my pants? Thanks." Yeah, they are being slaughtered for meat so people in Europe and Asia can eat it. Little do they know that the meat is full of medicines and vaccinations that are given to the horse while it is racing or someone's pet and these medications are not meant to be given to animals that are to be consumed. So they're eating horsemeat with stuff in it that can cause cancer or other illnesses!

No, it's not humane at all. They are transported in crammed conditions for days with no food or water. Then they have to listen to the cries of the horses ahead of them being slaughtered, and they are shot in the head with a thing called a captive bolt that is supposed to make them unconscious, but most of the time, misses it's mark because they are thrashing around since they're scared, so they end up being hung up by one leg and having their throats slit while still conscious.

No, not all ex-racers end up at slaughter, some are adopted or end up in thoroughbred retirement farms. And it's not just racers. They have horse auctions where people sell their horses and alot of times people buy them for cheap and then sell them to slaughter houses because they get paid by the pound. Some unsuspecting people are tricked into selling their pets to these killer buyers because they think their companion is going to a good home. It's all very sad.

His owners brought much needed attention to it. Many people didn't know it even existed in America. Now Barbaro's fans have become a major part of helping to bring attention to it and get it banned. People have been trying to end it for many years, but now thanks to Fans of Barbaro, it's closer than ever to being made illegal. We've already shut down all the foreign owned horse slaughter houses in the US. Now we just need to end the transport of horses to Canada and Mexico to be killed there.

i love horses, they are pretty much my life, I checked for news on Barbaro at least once a day. But people are so naive, there are so many 'wild' horses, no one knows what to do with them all. And with slaughter plants out of operation, what do you do with unwanted horses? People are now just turning them lose which makes the overpopulation worse.
America is loving it's wild horses to death because we can't accept the idea of horse slaughter. I would rather be slaughtered then starve to death..

I think that if you can no longer take care of a horse, you either sell it, or do what people do to unwanted dogs and cats that end up in shelters, HUMANELY euthanize them, not butcher them while they're still awake and aware or force them to travel in horrible conditions (too cramped, no food or water). My point is, slaughter isn't the only option for unwanted horses.

I agree.. there are other options such as adoption and birth control, but that is for mustangs. What about horses that have no place to go and miserable and crippled??? With no slaughter plants and no one that wants them they waste away in an unsanitary auction barns. Slaughter plants are not all mean and cruel, they can be quite humane... and at the moment foundations that are trying to save horses have no more room for the unwanted ones...

Yeah I know how you feel. They say that they only slaughter horses who are sick (who'd want to eat a sick horse?), old, or dangerous. I see alot of pictures of healthy, gentle horses going to slaughter. Some are even babies. They say w/o slaughter, more horses will be neglected and abused. That's bulls***. Some people will always be neglectful and abusive. They're just born messed up in the head like that! Just like people who work at slaughterhouses are mentally deranged!

There is a bill that would end it, but that pervert, disgrace of a senator, Larry Craig, is delaying it. He's not even running for re-election (it's easier to get away with trying to have sex with strangers in airport bathrooms when you're not a US senator...it doesn't make the news then!) so why does he care whether or not S.311 passes? He's just denying the will of the people. 80% of the country is against it. Don't we elect these senators to carry out our wishes? Otherwise, what's the point?

I have rescued over 200 horses a year from slaughter. and no matter how many I save, its a shock everytime. I dont understand how people can send horses to the worst death sentence possible. The Horses that carried our troops through battle and they risked their lives for us! And this is how we repay their sons and daughters!Barbaro wasnt sent to slaughter,and Im glad he wasnt! No Horse, no matter how wild he is, deserves a death like this. And people who do it, should have to pay!

Thats so sad I have a horse I rescued she is a draft and now she is getting first place at her shows and I wish I could adopt them all its so sad but to anyone that does adopt them YOU ARE GREAT!!!

I do horse rescue and there is a HUGE surplus of unwanted horses! It is a very sad reality but the humane thing to do is put some of these horses down and end their suffering. Disposal then becomes an issue so we should be enforcing humane treatment on the way to slaughter and humane destruction. I see neglected and abused horses every day, I wish there was a better solution!

Slaughter is a sad necessity. There are too many old, unsound or unwanted horses. Not enough people are willing or able to care for the surplus. Banning slaughter will force a very long and uncomfortable trip to less humane Mexico or Canada. What we should fight for is Humane treatment of all animals on the way to slaughter as well as quick and humane destruction. People should fully educate themselves from every angle of the issue.

I am fully educated on it. The conditions they travel to the slaughter houses in the States are just as inhumane as when they're shipped to Canada and Mexico. The method of slaughter is not humane euthanization for old horses. Young horses are victims too. Sometimes, they're still conscious when their thoats are slit open. There is no such thing as "humane slaughter." The only humane death is euthanization, which is much more preferable to slaughter. There are other options.

And the "surplus" is non existant. Research has proven that. When CA banned transporting horses to slaughter or when Cavel shut down due to fire a few years ago, there was no rise in the horse population or horses being abandoned as the pro-slaughter side predicted. Owners and breeders need to be more responsible. Rescues are willing to take in the horses, but they're competing with killer buyers at auctions who are only interested in making money from the slaughterhouses.

People DO need to be more educated on every angle, but it's the the pro-slaughter side who are not educated, nor are they open minded enough to think of other solutions. This isn't just about "aww, they're killing horses" it's about providing a dignified death to an animal that this country owes a great deal of it's history to.

In the US, horses were killed via a captive bolt to the head. it left them braindead, so honestly who cares what they do to them after? yes I love horses and I don't like slaughter, but it is, as NPR1212 said, a sad necessity.

Scared horses don't stand still. Captive bolts don't always hit their mark the first time when a horse is thrashing around. Many horses are still conscious when they're strung up by their leg and have their throats slit.

and shooting a horse is actually just as humane as euthanizing them..just not as pretty. It's actually easier, too. One shot to the head and they're gone. Otherwise, it's basically an overdose of medication. Needles slip or dosages are miscalculated, and the horse is left suffering until they're finally correctly euthanized. Is that really how you want them to go??

So what do we do with all of those horses that no one wants, the horse sanctuaries will eventually fill up. People need to stop breeding horses and that will eliminate the unwanted horses. To many horses are bred that should gelded(males) or not bred(mares)
