People campaign for provision of cycling lanes yet when there is one provided you choose not to use it then grumble about car drivers getting too close. If I were a judge my response would be "no case to answer".

It's not called road tax because it is not road tax, it's called vehicle excise duty - road tax was done away with partly so that vehicle excise duty payers wouldn't feel like they own the roads - despite the fact that that in a lot of cases they pay very very little, not enough to pave a driveway never mind a road network.

I personally feel that we should all have cameras fitted to our cars and bikes, it would settle any feuds in court as well as people causing accidents to claim compensation.

You should definitely report this. The police don't have enough to do with violent crime, drugs etc, they definitely need to be spending time chasing up motorists who passed a bike too close for the rider's comfort, causing absolutely no harm whatsoever.

Well, obviously the driver was in the wrong as it wasn't a safe overtaking, but you really should start using the bike lane. People like you are the reason I hate cyclists. I have nothing against cyclists who actually understand that they're maneuvering a slower vehicle and behave thereafter. Maybe taking a more dominant primary position right in the middle of the left (road, not cycle) lane would have given you a more comfortable bufferzone on your left to move in to when he stupidly overtakes? Obviously the driver is at fault as you are proceeding at more than reasonable speed on this road and traffic was not so heavy that he didn't have an opportunity to safely overtake (behind that silver people carrier)

@cschrille1 Like many cycle lanes in the UK, this lane is actually completely useless. From the video it looks like the cycle lane is less than 1m wide which is about the MINIMUM distance a cyclist should be from a kerb. The accident left me without a bike, and with significant physical injuries which meant I was unable to ride for two months and unable to dress myself properly or perform my job for over two weeks. As far as I'm concerned, I got off lightly.
I am the first to yell at other cyclists for not wearing helmets, not using lights and not obeying the traffic laws because at the end of the day it makes the rest of us (who do stick to the rules of the road) look bad.

Cycle lanes are provided in the hope that they will provide a safer and more convenient environment for cyclists. That does not mean that they are compulsory. If a cyclist feels that using the main carriageway is safer and/or more convenient then the highway code states (rule 61 - look it up) that they may do so. Also roads are funded through general taxation so all income/council tax payers contribute to the road. Will you people PLEASE get a clue.

Heck, I rode less than 10 miles today and STILL had someone turn left right in front of me and almost hit me. Such incidents used to get me so pissed off. @arushandapushand Bike lanes are pretty crap as a rule. They stop and start randomly, and sometimes they send you up on the pavement and then end, leaving you wondering if you're supposed to use the road or the pavement. But there WAS a lane there and not much of an effort was made to use it. Car drivers who don't cycle really don't have a clue what it's like to cycle on the road, so they get pissed off at cyclists doing things they don't expect, but a cyclist could see coming.
THere's not much point in getting into a bike lane which is suddenly going to disappear.

You've just got to choose the safest position in the road regardless of the existence of the lane. I agree - sometimes the lane will be safest because of the fact that that's where cars expect you to be. But that's not enough of a reason if the lane itself happens to be unsafe. It's always your call whether to use it.
It looks like you should adjust your position on that bit of road anyway since your chosen lane appears to take you through some nasty potholes. It's a tough call though. Nearer the kerb, into the inappropriate cycle lane that appears to remove your right of way and encourage dangerous passes, or out further and see the irrational rage increase.

First of all, I ride both road and mountain bikes and have a fair amount experience both riding on and off-road. I have thus far been involved in one accident, which put me in hospital when a driver failed to spot me on a roundabout and accelerated into the side of me.

These bike "lanes" are usually in the gutter, filled with debris and almost unusable. Not only this, but they encourage folk to make dangerous overtakes like that. Most people complaining about their lack of use and saying the driver is correct clearly have little knowledge of the highway code. ALWAYS pass at a safe distance. (I should point out before you accuse, I'm NOT a cyclist, rather a driver)

@ktr1690 A large proportion of cycle-related collisions happen as a result of cycle lanes. Which is largely why they are not a legal requirement and it states in the highway code that cyclists should use them "depending on experience".
This 1m wide lane of paint incites drivers not to yield to cyclists, the only offence committed here was by the motorist.

I'm sorry but the idea that the focus of this video is an enviro-political issue is a little absurd. I know exactly what it's like to be hit by an errant driver and have no wish to unduly hold up traffic for those very reasons, neither does this guy. The fact still remains that we have a right to be on the road regardless of the existence of (often ill-conceived) cycle lanes and we should be treated as such. End of Story.

The accident left me without a bike, and with significant physical injuries which meant I was unable to ride for two months and unable to dress myself properly or perform my job for over two weeks. As far as I'm concerned, I got off lightly.
I am the first to yell at other cyclists for not wearing helmets, not using lights and not obeying the traffic laws because at the end of the day it makes the rest of us (who do stick to the rules of the road) look bad.

Cycle lanes are provided in the hope that they will provide a safer and more convenient environment for cyclists. That does not mean that they are compulsory. If a cyclist feels that using the main carriageway is safer and/or more convenient then the highway code states (rule 61 - look it up) that they may do so. Also roads are funded through general taxation so all income/council tax payers contribute to the road. Will you people PLEASE get a clue.

I'm on a motorcycle, not a bike, and ride across the pond, but... Well, cagers are cagers. Heck, I rode less than 10 miles today and STILL had someone turn left right in front of me and almost hit me. Such incidents used to get me so pissed off. Now... eh, I just shrug it off and keep going. Self-righteous tattletaling doesn't get you anywhere, neither does a grudge. Close calls and a combo of aggressive and clueless drivers is a part of choosing two wheels. Best of luck! Ride safe.

Large vehicles with large engines pay the most. So I assume you instantly pull over and give way to Range Rovers, seeing as by your fuckwit logic since they pay more VED they own the fucking road? They stop and start randomly, and sometimes they send you up on the pavement and then end, leaving you wondering if you're supposed to use the road or the pavement. But there WAS a lane there and not much of an effort was made to use it. Car drivers who don't cycle really don't have a clue what it's like to cycle on the road, so they get pissed off at cyclists doing things they don't expect, but a cyclist could see coming.

THere's not much point in getting into a bike lane which is suddenly going to disappear.
The one in is vid disappears soon after the infamous overtake.
You've just got to choose the safest position in the road regardless of the existence of the lane. I agree - sometimes the lane will be safest because of the fact that that's where cars expect you to be. But that's not enough of a reason if the lane itself happens to be unsafe. It's always your call whether to use it.

It looks like you should adjust your position on that bit of road anyway since your chosen lane appears to take you through some nasty potholes. It's a tough call though. Nearer the kerb, into the inappropriate cycle lane that appears to remove your right of way and encourage dangerous passes, or out further and see the irrational rage increase.

First of all, I ride both road and mountain bikes and have a fair amount experience both riding on and off-road. I have thus far been involved in one accident, which put me in hospital when a driver failed to spot me on a roundabout and accelerated into the side of me.

@jonesy66691 As a driver, a motorcyclist and, yeah I cycle 10mins to the gym on occasion, I think it needs to be pointed out that 'road tax' or properly known vehicle excise duty isn't a 'right to road-use', but a general tax on motor-vehicles - nothing to do with road maintainence etc.
As far as the vid goes, as a cyclist, I don't get why the OU wasn't in the cycle lane. As a driver, the car driver should have over-taken more slowly.

These bike "lanes" are usually in the gutter, filled with debris and almost unusable. Not only this, but they encourage folk to make dangerous overtakes like that. Most people complaining about their lack of use and saying the driver is correct clearly have little knowledge of the highway code. ALWAYS pass at a safe distance. (I should point out before you accuse, I'm NOT a cyclist, rather a driver)

@ktr1690 A large proportion of cycle-related collisions happen as a result of cycle lanes. Which is largely why they are not a legal requirement and it states in the highway code that cyclists should use them "depending on experience".
This 1m wide lane of paint incites drivers not to yield to cyclists, the only offence committed here was by the motorist.
