Well, y'know, I probably wouldn't hate the dub if they ever released an uncut 5D's. They have enough good voice actors to pull it off, and they did it before with the first Yugioh. Of course, they probably WON'T, but that's life...
The dub has its ups and downs, and all in all, I wouldn't recommend it next to the Japanese version. It does have its good episodes, but it's just not that good as a whole. 5D's in Japan is amazing. It's the deepest Yugioh yet, and all the characters, as you said, rock. (Especially Yusei.)
I have yet to watch 5Ds since I gave up on GX, but it seems this company payed no mind to the dialouge. The character designs are not as good as the original D:
There are times when 4Kids does an OK job on this show (particularly episode 25), but for the most part, it's pretty bad.
In my opinion, 5D's is better than original Yugioh and WAY better than GX. I know you don't like the character designs, but I promise, they'll grow on you (the creator of Yugioh helped design them. How bad could they be?).
Ushio/Trudge sounds like Yami Yugi. And Yusei sounds like Tristan. What's the point! Original voices are PERFECT!

Ironically, Aki's one of the worst-portrayed characters in the dub, but she was one of the coolest in the original.
