bear is a teacher to the viewers who watch his show like me. the show is not about him trying to survive its about teaching the viewers how to survive in life threatening situations.
There's no way he's fake people who think so obviously dont watch his show. Ive watched man vs wild since i was eight and just from watching his show you can tell he is not in any way a fraud.
Regardless of whether his show and the way he presents it is real or fake, he has useful knowledge that can help you if you ever managed to get yourself into a tricky situation in the wild. You all have an opinion as to whether it's genuine or not but at the end of the day, if you're stuck in a forest then something you saw him do on the show would have stayed in your head and it will help you out. His knowledge is more valuable than arguing about whether he is staying in a hotel overnight or n
It pisses me off when people say that hes fake when its not even fucking presented as being an independent wilderness survival documentary. Youre a fucking idiot if you think this shit was intended to be presented otherwise. Also its not like he cant do this shit by himself anyway, he fucking climbed mount everest at the age of 23.
@missjnrr At least Steve Irwin died doing something that he loved, albeit in unfortunate circumstances - so what if he played around with nature and wildlife, their are morons in this world that play with all kinds of danger e.g. toxic waste, explosives, people's lives..
Bear's crew wearing a bear suit because they couldn't find a tamed bear. It's all in wikipedia. Please never compare Bear to Les, Les can probably survive in the wild for years, Bear will die without a hotel nearby. hahaha
@momay69 Are you a retard? Don't even open your mouth if you can't make brighter conclusions? It's not a secret he has a camera crew with him. And it's not like he's ripping someone of, you don't pay to watch the show, so take it or leave it.
Plus, each member has their part in the production and are understood with that. They're not the one's eating the raw frogs, sleeping inside dead animals, and what else you can think of. How can u put the responsibility on Grylls?
@rp2qr2rp They get what they're payed for and assigned to do including grylls. Blaim the production company. And what would you like? Bear Grylls out there alone, putting his life on a limb with no safety percausions for your entertainment? Thats a fair demand?
@momay69 Bear Grylls "am not the superhero sometime in the press" means Bear Grylls is trying to say he's not perfect and what people expect him to be like in the wilderness.
Bear Grylls sleeps at motel 6 while Les tries to survive in the wilderness for a week.
Read wikipedia about man vs wild article, You will read all the controversies. Lassoing a wild mustang that was actually a tamed horse at a ranch. lol
Rodgerinho, Hey dumbass, search youtube about bear grylls and fake and you will see a bunch of them. Are you a retard? Read wikipedia too, what more do you need?
@momay69 What kind of degenerate are you? The dude has a wife and kids, and the whole idea Bear's a fake only gets brought up when Les Stroud fanboy bitches are jumping on their hero's dick. Get a grip eh? Bear's not a fake
@momay69 That video doesn't prove anything! Who in their right mind would jump over REAL LAVA, on a tv show?!? Of course he did it somewhere safe! Fuck sake man, you dont have much common sense do you?
@Rodgerinho Well, Bear Grylls obviously. Notice how "careful" he crossed it. Such dramatization for a well walked crossing point..But I submit. Bear Grylls is the ultimate survivor. No one in their right mind will question him..The survival ayatollah, the backwoods mountain man. Yep, what a zero, I mean hero, what am I saying?
@mkgarnsey Whatever man. Far as I'm concerned I like both Stroud and Gryll's shows, they give practical advice and I've learned things from them. Seems foolish to get caught up in mudslinging when there's clearly good knowledge to learn
@Rodgerinho I don't believe Bear gives practical advice. You're floating all over the place. First he gives great advice. Then he's doing adventurous things because he's SAS, and no one else should do it,and they should know their limitations, now we're back to him giving practical advice to all. As far as what plants to eat, I'll grant that. But his stunts that he passes on that are downright wrong, are unforgivable. Mix in that some people have exposed his "feats" and resume', and I call BS.
@mkgarnsey I'm only "floating all over the place" because you're so focussed on trying to make me into the enemy. How can you possibly understand what I'm saying when you've already decided I'm opposed to you? I'll try and shed some light. You CAN learn from him, because he does the basics and explains it carefully, but you must use your brain to realise what's just "him", and what's meant for you. He doesn't say "everyone should jump into this lagoon" because it's implied you shouldn't
@mkgarnsey I have learned from the guy, because a lot of the things he offers are solid bits of advice. I still wouldn't climb a rock or go through an everglades swamp or plow into an arctic tundra, but that's because I have the common sense to realise that no tv show should or ever will be enough to prepare you for the harshest situations, you need to go and learn from a real person if you ever want to be able to do that. Neither Stroud nor Grylls learned their trade watching a tv show
@mkgarnsey Bottom line I saw the video where he was "exposed" and I find it totally acceptable. No person in their right mind would (nor should) be allowed to jump across active lava, just for a tv show. But he was demonstrating the sort of care you should observe in that situation. I've still never found anything that exposes his resume, only Stroud fanboys have ever brought that up in my experience, so I remain skeptical. Call bullshit if you want but he does seem to know a hell of a lot
@momay69 Les Stroud sleeps at motels too. When the weather was bad enough he hit the motel. And so what Bear brings a camera man? The camera guy's a fucking legend in his own right. Dont try and make Stroud seem like the dude just because he's able to do his own tech support
@Rodgerinho According to you, Bear can do it cuz he's SAS! No one else should attempt! Do your own googling. You don't believe us,find it yourself. The Australian survivalist that said they faked a scene with Bear and a croc. The site that says he never flew over Everest. The Brit that really was the youngest to summit Everest has called Bear out.Tactics that go against the SAS manual! Sorry this isn't enough evidence. You sound like a bad prosecutor.Never enough evidence.Re-read previous quotes.
More from the Aussies. "I think the SAS guys would find him a bit of a “pussy” when he whines on about his fear of snakes and bats. Also his suggested treatment for snakebite is outdated. Living in a country with the worlds top ten venomous land snakes people are aware of snakes and snakebite treatment. I shudder when I see the old “cut and suck” methods
Australia website"He definitely does not come across as either Special Forces or SAS. The British Special Forces are sceptical of his claim to have broken his back parachuting while on a mission in Africa. They claim to have not heard of him until he started popping up on TV and the SAS won’t confirm or deny. His only claim to fame is that he has been appointed chief world scout.
There were so many raised eyebrows that his production team had to come clean about many of his stunts being set up.
Calling him one of the bravest men in the world is cheap and elementary. I will not use a genetic disease on very nice people as my analogy. If you are going by sheer risk taking and entertainment as your hero, Evel Knievel puts them all to shame. Ain't no camera man gonna save Evel. Evel broke like 200 bones or some such. Been closer to death more times than Bear can count. How's that for being "simplistic".
@RayWilliamJohansen In the movie, which had too many F words for my liking, a guy falls in the river and is caught under a sweeper and drowns. Fictional scene of course, but very realistic on what can happen even in a mild current river. The experts disagree, but many say float head first so you can pop up onto a log jam versus getting pushed under it and unable to surface.
@mkgarnsey i saw the trailer and i did have to much swearing...there is nothing wrong with swearing but it gets annoying when people say it tom make themselves look tough.
@RayWilliamJohansen Ray, I'm going out on a limb, but I would bet some form of the F word was used a couple dozen times. The movie was outdoors survival based so I took the family. 3 teenagers who have hunted The U.S. and Canada, and climbed some of the highest peaks in the U.S. So needless to say Dad didn't have much choice. But when your 16 yr olds are there and they're F'ing this and that in the movie, it's a distraction to a Dad. Bobby Cole wrote a book,The Dummy Line. Make a great movie
@mkgarnsey why would your 16 year old kids be F'ing this and that all the time anyway... thats a reflection of your parenting or outside influence, its not a critisism for a movie or whatever you went to see...
@MakoGryphon ??That's the movie. Not my kids.I was uncomfortable that the actors were F'ing this and that.I know my kids know the words, they go to school and aren't in a rubber room somewhere. They are honor school students, 3.8 and 4.0 GPA, and state championship caliber football players.Things like that bother good parents. My kids are martial artists, one a black belt, climbed a couple 14,000 ft mtns, and shot their caribou at -40 below near Radisson,QC in November at 13yrs,Yours?
@mrfanlogan Firemen and policemen charging up the twin towers, when jets had crashed into them, was a voluntary act of heroism. Climbing a dangerous mountain with a crew of guides and Sherpas, is a great feat. Blind people and people with artificial limbs have done it. A great feat, but don't put it in the class of charging into a decimated building, figuring your never going to come out, but you do to save your fellow man, is light years ahead of a mountain climb. My 2 cents.
@mkgarnsey that a completely different type of Bravery. there is no argument because i was saying bear was immensely brave and you have just pointed out people who are braver. in a very down-syndrome manner.
@thedarknessjosh No way. They wont show a death on film, it's not legal. It's not live for goodness sake. Lol. But he definitely takes a lot of risks, clearly loves the rush. Bet he gets injured more than people realise
@thedarknessjosh I agree it's not a good SURVIVAL show. But before he jumps into rivers and waterfalls, trust me, they KNOW how deep it is etc. If he hadn't checked that out first, then he's not a good survivalist. Bear makes it look like you walk up to a fast current river, and without any thought, you get a running start and cannonball into it. A real person surviving is going to follow that river on the bank. SAS handbook talks of even avoiding walking in marshes that wet your feet.
can you imagine what it would be like for Bear and his crew if they actually DID this show just like it's portrayed? they would either be quickly burned out and sent to the hospital for exhaustion, quit the show until no one was left, and/or sue the company for putting them through such harsh dealings when it isn't necessary. anyone who thought this show was 100% real from the beginning obviously doesn't know TV well. the tips are still useful though and can save your life!
@BeatlesLuver32 Exactly. Use the message and learn from it, the show's supposed to educate people on tips to save their lives, it's not just cheap entertainment
@BeatlesLuver32 I agree, they just wouldn't survive doing what they do for very long, and ......hey wait....umm..wow, I guess they don't teach the best way to survive after all. Like staying calm, not running around like a chicken with it's head cut off. Thanks for the heads up on this show being unrealistic.
I'm sure Bear Grylls is a real outdoorsman. But there are elements of the show that just cannot be real. And all of you guys talking about how you know it's real and you know his advice works... uhh, I'd be willing to put a lot of money on the fact that none of you have ever even been camping for more than 3 days, let alone survived in the wild. In that case, you wouldn't really know if it works, would you? So maybe just enjoy your weird little tv show and stop trying to act like hardasses.
ok for all you ranting about about this guy being fake ... Yes there are several points during shows where he does have ppl standing by as support, there is not a network on tv that would allow him to film these events and First Aid not be readily available for him. whether or not he is fake or what have you, the things and skills he shows are in fact REAL.... Dont read so much into the means of how its presented, take away from what you see and use that information only. These techniques work.
@toddowen1972 If you filter out the "techniques" that cause people to watch it, then I would agree. However, that's about 50% of the show. teaching people to jump into fast flowing rivers in countradictive to the SAS handbook, and probably the Boy Scout handbook as well.
I think sometimes people forget that he's filming a tv show, and for the purposes of entertainment, they need certain shots. Also, he's just demonstrating techniques for survival, teaching, basically. Big deal if he sleeps in a hotel, or whatever the fuck people think. It's a tv show, and he's the face of it... the only reason there's controversy is because a bunch of dudes had a man-crush on him, and are disappointed to find he didn't rough it during his off time.
@jaws553 I love both shows but les actually teaches you how to survive as bears show claims to do so. But that's just it, it's not about entertaining it's about how to survive, not to put your life on the line by scaling 100ft rock faces, that's just the complete opposite.
@vinfightsfire you must not have seen many episodes, he has a crew, waiting miles away in a camp waiting if something went wrong, that's why (as the person said below me) he carries a "Spot" satellite emergency device, in which if something goes horribly wrong his crew isn't far away, I don't think what you are hearing is true anyways, different rules and regulations apply to different countries. But if you insist find this evidence and please provide it to us.
According to the Health and Safty regulations A crew must be present during any "survival show" The network that puts the show out there would be sued if something happened to the host so Screw everyone who says Les doesnt have a crew because by law he must lol
@vinfightsfire yes Les does have a safety crew in a near by location that he can contact if injured. but he really is surviving by himself and teaches logical choices when in a survival situation.
@vinfightsfire That would make sense, except for the fact that Survivorman is a Canadian made show, so I doubt they have the same health and safety regulations as we do here in the U.S. The show is produced in Canada by a Canadian production company, therefor the fact that the show airs in the United States does not mean they have to meet our stupid regulations.
@vinfightsfire Canada is a different story, eh? I went to Northern Ontario fishing and the camp outfitter told my 13 year olds to grab and ax and go cut firewood. I knew I was out of the states for sure then.
Everybody who thinks bear grylls is a fake fuck off, he used to be in the s.a.s so he is hard, he will know how to survive in any terrain because thats what the special forces teach you, obviously he wont stay in the middle of a carcus because he's go no need to, he's just doing it to show you what you SHOULD do... besides have you even seen the things he has eaten!
@matsterness he is fake... deal with it.... when he fishes with a spear the fish is allready dead.... he drinks water in the sahara... and he eats lots of food not only inscects....
He did pass SAS selection but I think he broke his back in a parachute jump so didn't stay in, Still you've got to be hard as nails to pass selection, it has 97% failure rate
@eurosceptic1 SAS reserve doesn't have 97% fail rate. It's still better than any other reserve force, but it's not as good as being in active service, I'd put any active serviceman ahead of a reserve force soldier. He's still an impressive guy, top chap and easy to listen to, I like the show no matter what his background is
@matsterness SAS reserve. Not quite the same. But he did break vertebrae in his back in a parachute accident, came back, climbed everest, and he clearly is really fit and strong. And if he can do the things he does and talk about it in that way, he obviously knows his stuff. Hell, even if he has an expert telling him what to say, doing what he does for long enough he'd definitely learn from it. And personally I think he's the best of them, he's easy to listen to and obviously loves the outdoors
@matsterness Consider me F'd off then. Would SAS survival instructors tell you to jump into a raging river without enemy behind? Bear is as real as "TOPGUN" the movie was. Good movie, fake as hell. The Topgun instructor that was the consultant to the show said in an interview he gave up. He was just glad they didn't make it a musical. He called all of his friends who knew he was working with the show and said, it's not my doing. They are making entertainment here, not a documentary boys.
This guy is a fake. Justwannahavefun if you think Bear teaches survival, don't ever get in a bad situation. This clown jumps into waterfalls, rivers, etc. So now you're wet, maybe break a leg. Get real. Les can teach Bear how to survive anyday, and the bear isn't fit to tie Les' shoes.
@mkgarnsey How is he fake? I dont think it's relevant to compare them, they'd both survive in a shit situation. Bear refers to the outdoors as his playground, he's a bit of an adrenaline junkie and tends to have fun sometimes because he knows how important it is to be happy now and again in a survival situation
@Rodgerinho Not enough characters to help you out. But, he's fake as he employe counter survival strategies. You don't get wet and expose yourself to hypothermia if it can be helped. You don't jump into a raging river of unknown depth, or if there is a jagged log under the surface. I'll take calm, cool, and level headed Les over an adrenaline junkie any day. If you're in survival mode frolicking about is not needed. A fire and a good meal is paradise. You don't need to TRY and kill yourself
@mkgarnsey Not enough characters to help you out? What do you mean? As far as getting wet, he's only ever done that when he knew he had a good shelter, and even then he needs to be fit to raise his body temperature by exercising at a high rate. Bad for your heart but I assure you most special forces train their guys to be able for it. It can be necessary. As far as jumping into water, he does it so often he knows what to watch out for. YOU shouldn't jump into a river. Bear knows what he's doing
@mkgarnsey And another thing you need to recognise is Bear tries to showcase really bad situations, and what you should do in them. He often takes risks in order to show you how to respond to them. If you absolutely HAVE to get yourself wet, he's showing you how to cope. Often things are out of your control, you cant decide to follow the guidelines rigidly
@Rodgerinho Walked downstairs to get my copy of THE SAS SURVIVAL HNADBOOK, by John Wiseman, Harper Collins 1999, paperback. Section 7, Chapter "On the Move", subsection Waterways, beginning page #368, Waterways P.380. Raft building, following rivers, crossing rivers. "RIVERS ARE DANGEROUS - "NEVER enter the water unless there is no other way of getting across" See raft building. Always check the water with a wading stick. Bear has this done for him most likely. Too many other sites.
@mkgarnsey It's basic advice. Listen Bear Grylls is the youngest scout master of all time, and he TAUGHT the SAS how to survive in the wild, that was his specialisation in the forces. You think some Harper Collins high street book is relevant to Bear Grylls? He doesn't follow those rules because he knows all the possible dangers, and he stays within his own comfort zone. Just because that's not your comfort zone doesn't mean you should criticise the guy. And he doesn't jump in rivers every ep
@Rodgerinho The show is to teach others to survive. Not be a stunt man. The SAS survival guide was written by an SAS instructor. So either Bear "Taught them" something different, or he's not teaching people what he taught the SAS. Which is it? I'm curious if this isn't one of those resume's you hear about. The professor whose been teaching and doesn't have the doctorate he said he had. So is Bear teaching citizens to do more than they should? More than his SAS crowd?
@mkgarnsey I'm trying to get it through to you though, when an SAS survival guide is written for the public, yes of course it's going to be very basic and safety oriented. What they teach one another in the forces is going to be a completely different standard. If they have to complete a mission they cant be afraid of getting their feet wet or jumping in a river. Special forces have to take risks that average folks dont have to. So yes, he would teach them something different.
@Rodgerinho Are you that dense? He is NOT teaching SAS classes here. SAS people, real instructors, say this guy is a fraud, sham, scam, and practices idiot techniques. If you're on a military operation and are running from the enemy, yes you dive in rivers, and do anything to get away. If you are stranded in the wilderness you do very little of what Bear does. This guy has had people directly involved with his resume' refute it! What does it take for you to say he doesn't employ sound tactics?
@mkgarnsey I never said he was teaching SAS classes. Go ahead and point me to an article or interview with someone of real credentials who says Bear is a fraud. All I've observed is people saying he's a fraud....because Les Stroud is awesome. Seriously not a SINGLE person I've ever heard badmouthing Bear Grylls does it without mentioning Stroud. I will say with regards his approach, it's by no means universal to everyone. But a huge amount of his advice is solid, and it could keep you alive
@mkgarnsey As far as SAS, those guys are tough as hell. I saw a show where they took regular people and gave them a chance to do a 10 day example of the SAS entrance training. It was insane! 1st night they give them 3 hours sleep, minimal food, then gave them each a map with co-ords to the top of a mountain. Took them something like an average 5-6 hours to reach the summit and back. When most were back down (some didn't make it in time), they gave them a new map. Top of the mountain again.
@mkgarnsey Overall 24 hours of hell before they let them sleep again, and all just on the 1st day. And strict as hell, one guy asked for painkillers because his feet were bleeding and blistered. Soon as he asked they told him he was done
@Rodgerinho Hey retard, stick to the subject about that fake show. So what if Bear has SAS training, the real issue here is that he deceived people. idiot
@Rodgerinho And this relates to our discussion on Bear's credibility as a survivalist who is passing on solid information how?? I give up an ya bud. Bear Grylls is awesome. One tough SOB. All his training and his resume' have never been refuted. If you ever get in a real bad situation, just dive in a river, especially if you're on yer own. I stand corrected. Now warm up the popcorn and turn Bear on. (For everyone besides Rod, this is sarcasm)
@mkgarnsey If you dont have proof he's a fake, and you cant prove anyone who knows what they're talking about refuted his resume, then how do you know he's a fake? Just point me to whatever you read or saw that convinced you the guy is a fake, that's all I'm asking. I think that's a reasonable request. Otherwise you're just another Les Stroud fan that hates on Bear Gyrlls just because he's the more successful of the two
@Rodgerinho And, if you're running from an enemy, I'm still not going to dive into a raging river unless forced to. Weapons are subject to being lost, I die on a rock, drowned, etc. Everyone takes calculated risks. I kick doors for a living, raid houses, and face the unknown every night with light and gun in hand. IF I don't have to I won't. I'd much rather they come out. THE ATF raided the branch Davidian compound instead of getting the guy jogging through town. What was the better tactic?
@mkgarnsey He wasn't running away from an enemy. The guy has jumped in a river how many times? I mean it's meant to demonstrate a shit situation, IF you find yourself in that particular circumstance. He wouldn't jump in a river normally. You're with SWAT? Big city or small? I know it's a tough job. How long have you been with your unit? I was surprised to learn SWAT get their weapons and gear from raids and even the van is just a regular vehicle painted black. What do you carry with you normally?
@mkgarnsey As far as the show is concerned, he teaches you the basics, shows you what you can eat etc. When it comes to the dangerous parts, he's teaching survival at a fast pace, i.e. you have a deadline, get moving. It's because he always has a deadline to meet to get his chopper, and for filming. He takes risks because he has to, and he's well able to handle it. Anyway he barely takes any risks, and only occasionally. I doubt you've seen every episode, sounds like you just want to criticise him
"Spaghetti Shirt Productions"... Why do video makers have to come out with this corny shit? You guys are no fucking film production company, enterprise or anything, idiots.
You have to filter out the bullshit in life. I would never scale down vines cuz I know I can't. But I do like how bear eats edibles in the wild to give an example of what not to eat or what to eat to stay alive. Or how to male shelter. FOR EARTHS SAKE , FILTER OUT THE BS.
@phackqu you wouldnt end up in these situations on a regular day and im pretty sure you would scale down some vines if your life depended on it, which is the whole point of the show, to deal with these life threatening situations
I really don't see the controversy... hey but remember 9/11?

@Rodgerinho Hahaha Do you even understand what this video is trying to say? You're an idiot. The proofs are on your face and you still ignore it.

@Rodgerinho Ok how about that bullshit he did along the highway? Go to "Bear grylls is a phony". You still think your boyfriend is great? lmao
momay69 3 weeks ago
@Rodgerinho Well, Bear Grylls obviously. Notice how "careful" he crossed it. Such dramatization for a well walked crossing point..But I submit. Bear Grylls is the ultimate survivor. No one in their right mind will question him..The survival ayatollah, the backwoods mountain man. Yep, what a zero, I mean hero, what am I saying?
mkgarnsey 3 weeks ago
@mkgarnsey Whatever man. Far as I'm concerned I like both Stroud and Gryll's shows, they give practical advice and I've learned things from them. Seems foolish to get caught up in mudslinging when there's clearly good knowledge to learn
Rodgerinho 3 weeks ago
@Rodgerinho I don't believe Bear gives practical advice. You're floating all over the place. First he gives great advice. Then he's doing adventurous things because he's SAS, and no one else should do it,and they should know their limitations, now we're back to him giving practical advice to all. As far as what plants to eat, I'll grant that. But his stunts that he passes on that are downright wrong, are unforgivable. Mix in that some people have exposed his "feats" and resume', and I call BS.
mkgarnsey 3 weeks ago
@mkgarnsey I'm only "floating all over the place" because you're so focussed on trying to make me into the enemy. How can you possibly understand what I'm saying when you've already decided I'm opposed to you? I'll try and shed some light. You CAN learn from him, because he does the basics and explains it carefully, but you must use your brain to realise what's just "him", and what's meant for you. He doesn't say "everyone should jump into this lagoon" because it's implied you shouldn't
Rodgerinho 3 weeks ago
@mkgarnsey I have learned from the guy, because a lot of the things he offers are solid bits of advice. I still wouldn't climb a rock or go through an everglades swamp or plow into an arctic tundra, but that's because I have the common sense to realise that no tv show should or ever will be enough to prepare you for the harshest situations, you need to go and learn from a real person if you ever want to be able to do that. Neither Stroud nor Grylls learned their trade watching a tv show
Rodgerinho 3 weeks ago
@mkgarnsey Bottom line I saw the video where he was "exposed" and I find it totally acceptable. No person in their right mind would (nor should) be allowed to jump across active lava, just for a tv show. But he was demonstrating the sort of care you should observe in that situation. I've still never found anything that exposes his resume, only Stroud fanboys have ever brought that up in my experience, so I remain skeptical. Call bullshit if you want but he does seem to know a hell of a lot
Rodgerinho 3 weeks ago
@Rodgerinho Les Stroud goes alone while bear brings all his crew, deceives people and sleeps at the motel 6. hahaha
momay69 3 weeks ago
@momay69 Les Stroud sleeps at motels too. When the weather was bad enough he hit the motel. And so what Bear brings a camera man? The camera guy's a fucking legend in his own right. Dont try and make Stroud seem like the dude just because he's able to do his own tech support
Rodgerinho 3 weeks ago

I shudder when I see the old “cut and suck” methods
mkgarnsey 1 month ago
Australia website"He definitely does not come across as either Special Forces or SAS. The British Special Forces are sceptical of his claim to have broken his back parachuting while on a mission in Africa. They claim to have not heard of him until he started popping up on TV and the SAS won’t confirm or deny. His only claim to fame is that he has been appointed chief world scout.
There were so many raised eyebrows that his production team had to come clean about many of his stunts being set up.
mkgarnsey 1 month ago
Calling him one of the bravest men in the world is cheap and elementary. I will not use a genetic disease on very nice people as my analogy. If you are going by sheer risk taking and entertainment as your hero, Evel Knievel puts them all to shame. Ain't no camera man gonna save Evel. Evel broke like 200 bones or some such. Been closer to death more times than Bear can count. How's that for being "simplistic".

RayWilliamJohansen 1 month ago
@RayWilliamJohansen In the movie, which had too many F words for my liking, a guy falls in the river and is caught under a sweeper and drowns. Fictional scene of course, but very realistic on what can happen even in a mild current river. The experts disagree, but many say float head first so you can pop up onto a log jam versus getting pushed under it and unable to surface.
mkgarnsey 1 month ago
@mkgarnsey i saw the trailer and i did have to much swearing...there is nothing wrong with swearing but it gets annoying when people say it tom make themselves look tough.
RayWilliamJohansen 1 month ago
@RayWilliamJohansen Ray, I'm going out on a limb, but I would bet some form of the F word was used a couple dozen times. The movie was outdoors survival based so I took the family. 3 teenagers who have hunted The U.S. and Canada, and climbed some of the highest peaks in the U.S. So needless to say Dad didn't have much choice. But when your 16 yr olds are there and they're F'ing this and that in the movie, it's a distraction to a Dad. Bobby Cole wrote a book,The Dummy Line. Make a great movie
mkgarnsey 1 month ago
@mkgarnsey why would your 16 year old kids be F'ing this and that all the time anyway... thats a reflection of your parenting or outside influence, its not a critisism for a movie or whatever you went to see...

My 2 cents.

Rodgerinho 1 month ago
@thedarknessjosh I agree it's not a good SURVIVAL show. But before he jumps into rivers and waterfalls, trust me, they KNOW how deep it is etc. If he hadn't checked that out first, then he's not a good survivalist. Bear makes it look like you walk up to a fast current river, and without any thought, you get a running start and cannonball into it. A real person surviving is going to follow that river on the bank. SAS handbook talks of even avoiding walking in marshes that wet your feet.

can you imagine what it would be like for Bear and his crew if they actually DID this show just like it's portrayed? they would either be quickly burned out and sent to the hospital for exhaustion, quit the show until no one was left, and/or sue the company for putting them through such harsh dealings when it isn't necessary. anyone who thought this show was 100% real from the beginning obviously doesn't know TV well. the tips are still useful though and can save your life!

ok for all you ranting about about this guy being fake ... Dont read so much into the means of how its presented, take away from what you see and use that information only. These techniques work.
toddowen1972 1 month ago
@toddowen1972 If you filter out the "techniques" that cause people to watch it, then I would agree. However, that's about 50% of the show. teaching people to jump into fast flowing rivers in countradictive to the SAS handbook, and probably the Boy Scout handbook as well.
mkgarnsey 1 month ago
I think sometimes people forget that he's filming a tv show, and for the purposes of entertainment, they need certain shots. Also, he's just demonstrating techniques for survival, teaching, basically. Big deal if he sleeps in a hotel, or whatever the fuck people think. It's a tv show, and he's the face of it... the only reason there's controversy is because a bunch of dudes had a man-crush on him, and are disappointed to find he didn't rough it during his off time.

And if he can do the things he does and talk about it in that way, he obviously knows his stuff. Hell, even if he has an expert telling him what to say, doing what he does for long enough he'd definitely learn from it. And personally I think he's the best of them, he's easy to listen to and obviously loves the outdoors
Rodgerinho 1 month ago
@matsterness Consider me F'd off then. Would SAS survival instructors tell you to jump into a raging river without enemy behind? Bear is as real as "TOPGUN" the movie was. Good movie, fake as hell. The Topgun instructor that was the consultant to the show said in an interview he gave up. He was just glad they didn't make it a musical. He called all of his friends who knew he was working with the show and said, it's not my doing. They are making entertainment here, not a documentary boys.

so there's this fight about the better survival man?
I know nothing about Les stroud but has he ever drank his own piss?
TheElderTrollsVI 2 months ago
This guy is a fake. Justwannahavefun if you think Bear teaches survival, don't ever get in a bad situation. This clown jumps into waterfalls, rivers, etc. So now you're wet, maybe break a leg. Get real. Les can teach Bear how to survive anyday, and the bear isn't fit to tie Les' shoes.
mkgarnsey 2 months ago
@mkgarnsey How is he fake? I dont think it's relevant to compare them, they'd both survive in a shit situation. Bear refers to the outdoors as his playground, he's a bit of an adrenaline junkie and tends to have fun sometimes because he knows how important it is to be happy now and again in a survival situation
Rodgerinho 1 month ago
@Rodgerinho Not enough characters to help you out. But, he's fake as he employe counter survival strategies. You don't get wet and expose yourself to hypothermia if it can be helped. You don't jump into a raging river of unknown depth, or if there is a jagged log under the surface. I'll take calm, cool, and level headed Les over an adrenaline junkie any day. If you're in survival mode frolicking about is not needed. A fire and a good meal is paradise. You don't need to TRY and kill yourself
mkgarnsey 1 month ago
@mkgarnsey Not enough characters to help you out? What do you mean? As far as getting wet, he's only ever done that when he knew he had a good shelter, and even then he needs to be fit to raise his body temperature by exercising at a high rate. Bad for your heart but I assure you most special forces train their guys to be able for it. It can be necessary. As far as jumping into water, he does it so often he knows what to watch out for. YOU shouldn't jump into a river. Bear knows what he's doing
Rodgerinho 1 month ago
@mkgarnsey And another thing you need to recognise is Bear tries to showcase really bad situations, and what you should do in them. He often takes risks in order to show you how to respond to them. If you absolutely HAVE to get yourself wet, he's showing you how to cope. Often things are out of your control, you cant decide to follow the guidelines rigidly
Rodgerinho 1 month ago
@Rodgerinho Walked downstairs to get my copy of THE SAS SURVIVAL HNADBOOK, by John Wiseman, Harper Collins 1999, paperback. Section 7, Chapter "On the Move", subsection Waterways, beginning page #368, Waterways P.380. Raft building, following rivers, crossing rivers. "RIVERS ARE DANGEROUS - "NEVER enter the water unless there is no other way of getting across" See raft building. Always check the water with a wading stick. Bear has this done for him most likely. Too many other sites.
mkgarnsey 1 month ago
@mkgarnsey It's basic advice. Listen Bear Grylls is the youngest scout master of all time, and he TAUGHT the SAS how to survive in the wild, that was his specialisation in the forces. You think some Harper Collins high street book is relevant to Bear Grylls? He doesn't follow those rules because he knows all the possible dangers, and he stays within his own comfort zone. Just because that's not your comfort zone doesn't mean you should criticise the guy. And he doesn't jump in rivers every ep
Rodgerinho 1 month ago
@Rodgerinho The show is to teach others to survive. Not be a stunt man. The SAS survival guide was written by an SAS instructor. So either Bear "Taught them" something different, or he's not teaching people what he taught the SAS. Which is it? I'm curious if this isn't one of those resume's you hear about. The professor whose been teaching and doesn't have the doctorate he said he had. So is Bear teaching citizens to do more than they should? More than his SAS crowd?
mkgarnsey 1 month ago
@mkgarnsey I'm trying to get it through to you though, when an SAS survival guide is written for the public, yes of course it's going to be very basic and safety oriented. What they teach one another in the forces is going to be a completely different standard. If they have to complete a mission they cant be afraid of getting their feet wet or jumping in a river. Special forces have to take risks that average folks dont have to. So yes, he would teach them something different.
Rodgerinho 1 month ago
@Rodgerinho Are you that dense? He is NOT teaching SAS classes here. SAS people, real instructors, say this guy is a fraud, sham, scam, and practices idiot techniques. If you're on a military operation and are running from the enemy, yes you dive in rivers, and do anything to get away. If you are stranded in the wilderness you do very little of what Bear does. This guy has had people directly involved with his resume' refute it! What does it take for you to say he doesn't employ sound tactics?
mkgarnsey 1 month ago
@mkgarnsey I never said he was teaching SAS classes. Go ahead and point me to an article or interview with someone of real credentials who says Bear is a fraud. All I've observed is people saying he's a fraud....because Les Stroud is awesome. Seriously not a SINGLE person I've ever heard badmouthing Bear Grylls does it without mentioning Stroud. I will say with regards his approach, it's by no means universal to everyone. But a huge amount of his advice is solid, and it could keep you alive
Rodgerinho 4 weeks ago
@mkgarnsey As far as SAS, those guys are tough as hell. I saw a show where they took regular people and gave them a chance to do a 10 day example of the SAS entrance training. It was insane! 1st night they give them 3 hours sleep, minimal food, then gave them each a map with co-ords to the top of a mountain. Took them something like an average 5-6 hours to reach the summit and back. When most were back down (some didn't make it in time), they gave them a new map. Top of the mountain again.
Rodgerinho 4 weeks ago
@mkgarnsey Overall 24 hours of hell before they let them sleep again, and all just on the 1st day. And strict as hell, one guy asked for painkillers because his feet were bleeding and blistered. Soon as he asked they told him he was done

(For everyone besides Rod, this is sarcasm)
mkgarnsey 4 weeks ago
@mkgarnsey If you dont have proof he's a fake, and you cant prove anyone who knows what they're talking about refuted his resume, then how do you know he's a fake? Just point me to whatever you read or saw that convinced you the guy is a fake, that's all I'm asking. I think that's a reasonable request. Otherwise you're just another Les Stroud fan that hates on Bear Gyrlls just because he's the more successful of the two
Rodgerinho 4 weeks ago

Sometimes there isnt a 10 man crew, its just one cameraman following bear, like in the sahara episode in series 2

Dear journal,
It has been five days since I set out to find 'justwannahavefun19's comment. Already I'm running low on food and I fear I will not make it
