i dont really think chinese is a part of viet, i speak chinese and idk viet and they hardly sound the same. plus, the writing are SO different, viet uses letters and chinese uses strokes.

actually vietnamese writing system used to use the calligraphy of china and the language was influenced greatly by cantonese. when the french missionaries came, Alexander De Rhodes created a latin alphabet to make it easier to convert the bible into vietnamese to spread christianity.

@mystickirby umm plenty of words in Vietnamese are closer to Cantonese than Mandarin because the original lands of Viet Nam was once just what is the Northern part of Viet Nam today and the troops of Guangdong province took over Viet Nam then its citizens moved there.

@mystickirby ummm cantonese and mandarin and other dialects of chinese are ALL spoken. chinese is the caligraphy. the dialects are the ways to read and speak/express what is written. Cantonese speakers can read the calligraphy written by mandarin speakers same with shanghainese speakers.
