I love Veronica Lake and there are a lot of false rumors about her. According to Mrs Lake she was cheating and dumped by hollywood because of Joan Caulfield and Bing Crosby. Joan Caulfield was a very dangerous and jealous bitch that at the time was desperately trying to take Mrs Lake place.

I have a theory as to why she took this role. First, she destroys Hitler (literally). The Nazi role in the 1940 is what hurt her career, if you recall. So it's a message to her critics, throwing it in their face so to speak. Second, she is destroying a face -- and her own face was effectively destroyed, compared to what it was -- so it is like saying that this Hollywood fascination with looks needs to be destroyed. She was a non-conformist. Or maybe she just needed the money -- I don't know.

This is sad to watch!! The first time I saw her on screen my jaw hit my feet, and this is balck & white, I'm all of 15 growing up in the late 80's...it was the Diner scene (Sullivan's Travels), she turns around and serves the "hobo". Ahhh. Sadly, Lake turned to booze. Hitler got it too easy!

Veronica had it rough at the end in '73 with the Hepatitus and mental issues. The lady had it rough. We can all feel safe though; she got even with Charlie Chaplin in this flick. This happened to a lot of big Hollywood stars when roles petered out for them in the 60's, 70's. Check out Ray Milland in The Thing With Two Heads, where he plays a head transplant patient whose head is grafted on to a large and living black man.

Veronica Lake was an icon of 1940s Holllywood, a huge star. Her career fizzled out in the early 50s, and years later she was discovered working as a barmaid in Manhattan. The publicity from this discovery revived her career in a small way, she had her own talk show for a while in Baltimore, but she also had problems with alcohol and the IRS, and so she ended her career appearing in this atrocity. So the last thing this screen legend did in the movies was cackle a whiskey-soaked laugh through gapped teeth and flash a Heil Hitler. Ouch.

She was used to prank her film partners so bad during the shootings. So i think she felt at her ease in this part. I think that afterall her heart was more devastated than her teeth. sorry but those teeth were hers, she had lost a few and others were damaged during her last years. She was drunk most of the time during shooting. The movie cost 20 000 dollars and was released years later but almost no one watched it. I think she was paid only a few thousands dollars for that disaster.
