I love Veronica Lake and there are a lot of false rumors about her. According to Mrs Lake she was cheating and dumped by hollywood because of Joan Caulfield and Bing Crosby. Joan Caulfield was a very dangerous and jealous bitch that at the time was desperately trying to take Mrs Lake place.
Veronica, Noir Goddess Forever !
Veronica's beauty is showcased magnificently at 6:18, when she asks Hitler if she like her little maggots. Sublime.
I think she was proud and gratified to have an opportunity to display her patriotism and love of country in play-acting the application voracious maggots to Adolf Hitler's flesh. Too bad this wasn't a porn flick, she could have been masturbating too.
@yogafan6500 You're so off base it can only mean you're delusional. This film was not only a masterpiece, it was a perfect vehicle for Veronica Lake, crazy alcoholic bitch. She revels in this role, just look at her enthusiasm.
It's too bad the negative and all copies of this film weren't destroyed, or lost, the way a great movie like The Magnificent Ambersons was lost. A great actress shouldn't be remembered for garabage like this. An insult to human dignity.
@lakewalker11 I vehemently disagree! This movie is great, a masterpiece! Veronica handles the maggots deftly because she had practice, living in alleys around Union Station when she was homeless.
Veronica was a crazy alcoholic bitch. Who knows how many scum had a go at her over the intervening years. Wonderful and exciting! Look at her bad teeth. She wears them as a medal commemorating a life lived with gusto, an authentic life. Too bad she didn't do porn.
She wasn't very beautiful when she was younger, actually. She was attractive, but beautiful? No. Hollywood dressed her up and she was a sex symbol like that. Hollywood spit her out once she was past her shelf life. And you know, she's about 48 in this film. I've met a lot of women that look worse at that age. IMHO, people have so many excuses for things because they don't want to admit the reality that we live in. Reality: our world is full of suffering and pain.
I have a theory as to why she took this role. First, she destroys Hitler (literally). The Nazi role in the 1940 is what hurt her career, if you recall. So it's a message to her critics, throwing it in their face so to speak. Second, she is destroying a face -- and her own face was effectively destroyed, compared to what it was -- so it is like saying that this Hollywood fascination with looks needs to be destroyed. She was a non-conformist. Or maybe she just needed the money -- I don't know.
In her day, Veronica Lake was beauty personified! She had the most magnificent skin, smile, "and most perfect set of legs in the business", Lake also brought mystery and intelligence into her roles. This is sad to watch!! The first time I saw her on screen my jaw hit my feet, and this is balck & white, I'm all of 15 growing up in the late 80's...it was the Diner scene (Sullivan's Travels), she turns around and serves the "hobo". Ahhh. Sadly, Lake turned to booze. Hitler got it too easy!
Mad shit. Thanks for the up, this gem of mentalness made my rather dull evening. I've never been so torn between clicking Like of Dislike. Neither button sums it up.
@ShadowTheHedgehog157 i am always surprised when people make comments about celebrities aging and saying "wow, what happened to her". Ummmm, it's called "aging". Face and neck lifts weren't so popular back then as they are now. As for her teeth, who knows. Maybe it was the alcohol. Alcohol, I assume, rots the teeth, if improper dental hygiene is practiced.
Her evil laugh from 6:28-6:41 is even cornier and worse acting than Eric Freeman's evil laugh in the notorious "Garbage Day" scene from Silent Night, Deadly Night 2.
So when you clone people their "twin" (brother? duplicate?) will somehow magically have the ability to speak perfect English even though they couldn't themselves when they were alive? Wow science is a marvel, isn't it?
Veronica had it rough at the end in '73 with the Hepatitus and mental issues. The lady had it rough. We can all feel safe though; she got even with Charlie Chaplin in this flick. Seriously though , Der Fuhrer had it coming. Remember her for her "peek-a-boo" elegance that she brought to the screen (Now you see it, now you don't) Her beauty is timeless. They don't make 'em like that anymore.
what in the world was veronica lake thinking to make this her final film appearance??? either that or the bucks were really big !!! reminds me of the great joan crawford - who made dozens of classic films - and ended her career with TROG.....how horrible.....even my AVA GARDNER agreed to star in THE SENTINEL, back in the 1970s'......horrible movies these great beauties chose to end there time on film.......just my opinion........
Well, you can't say she doesn't play her mad scientist part with conviction. I don't know who ended worse ... Veronica or Bela Legosi. But that's the blessing and curse of film ... it's forever.
This happened to a lot of big Hollywood stars when roles petered out for them in the 60's, 70's. Check out Ray Milland in The Thing With Two Heads, where he plays a head transplant patient whose head is grafted on to a large and living black man.
Veronica Lake was an icon of 1940s Holllywood, a huge star. Her career fizzled out in the early 50s, and years later she was discovered working as a barmaid in Manhattan. The publicity from this discovery revived her career in a small way, she had her own talk show for a while in Baltimore, but she also had problems with alcohol and the IRS, and so she ended her career appearing in this atrocity. A pity, she was beautiful and her appeal has lasted for generations now. Rest in Peace, Veronica.
Man, Veronica Lake was big in the 1940s and I remember seeing this movie when I was a kid and knew how fucking bad this was back then. This movie in was filmed in 1967 and came out in 1970, no wonder it bombed! Sorry this had to be Veronica's last film, she could've did better than that, but hey, she DESPERATELY needed the money.
It gives the chance to see how was Veronica in her later years, but except for that detail, this film is abominable. There's no doubt that I'll always prefer the Veronica Lake of the '40s, who starred in several films with Alan Ladd.
@bfcgal1983 Sadly I have to agree, my friend... and it's hard to believe that the blonde woman is Veronica Lake. What a great beauty she was in the '40s and how old she appears because of years of abuse alcohol!
It was precisely the abuse of alcohol which led Veronica to death in 1973, victim of hepatitis and renal failure.
"You could put all the talent I had into your left eye and still not suffer from impaired vision."
"I've reached a point in my life where it's the little things that matter... I was always a rebel and probably could have got much further had I changed my attitude. But when you think about it, I got pretty far without changing attitudes. I'm happier with that." (1970)
hmmm The maggots were a nice touch, but otherwise, yeah, this clip is definitely something to laugh at, if that even. Her teeth definitely make her seem more of a mad scientist/sinister character... Just wow.
Is amazing how people age- she was like 45 when she filmed this movie...........compare how she looked in Sullivan's Travels or in any of her movies with Alan Ladd..........my gosh! RIP, Ms Lake.........
So the last thing this screen legend did in the movies was cackle a whiskey-soaked laugh through gapped teeth and flash a Heil Hitler. Ouch.
But she would still do that raised eyebrow thing and a few of the old Lake expressions. But my God...
I hope, I really do, that the crew and actors were yukking it up between scenes and just laughing the whole thing off as a fun get together to make some cash and nothing more. Thinking anything else is heartwrenching.
`Iprefer to remember Ms. Lake as the iconic siren who absolutely nailed some groundbreaking roles in film noir classics like "The Glass Key", " The Blue Dahlia", and others. She should always be remember for those contributions to the art of cinema. Not for this abomination.
You mean looks wise? For a 50 year old woman she wasn't doing too bad. Nobody stays 19 forever. And anyway, being `hot` is not always enough for a long sucessful film career.
That's what alcohol abuse does to you. She died at a really young age too, just 50 years old. In her later years she was even working as a bar maid. As far as I am concerned she was one of the beautiful women, if not the beautiful women, that ever walked the face of her earth. It is a great shame to see Ms. Lake’s beauty ravaged in this clip of her last film, when most Hollywood goddesses of that age still retain their beauty...
Veronica Lake at her finest, despite the film being so cheesy. It was a great film, though I'm still young. Thanks to my grandmother to bringing me the classics. ^^
Thanks for posting this. I was curious as to what Veronica Lake looked like in her later years. Apparently this low-budget schlock horror was her last film. Kind of a tragic story, overall.
LOL Yeah, she didn't look good in this picture at all. Although Veronica Lake in the 40's and 50's was beautiful and her teeth were too. She was a chain smoker as well as a drinker and suffered from Hepatitus
choose? Choose what? The poor Veronica Lake couldn't choose at all at these bad times, only grab whatever was proposed to her because she was just trying to survive. She was used to prank her film partners so bad during the shootings. So i think she felt at her ease in this part. I think that afterall her heart was more devastated than her teeth. R.I.P. miss Lake forever.
sorry but those teeth were hers, she had lost a few and others were damaged during her last years. She was drunk most of the time during shooting. The movie cost 20 000 dollars and was released years later but almost no one watched it. I think she was paid only a few thousands dollars for that disaster.
Saw this on the most effective triple bill in the history of the drive in film circuit. Proud to have been a witness to history. The evening began with this one, then went to 2000 Maniacs (the best) , then Blood Feast (the worst or tied with Flesh Feast) Before there was torture porn.
I would love to see her interview on "The Dick Cavett Show" which apparently was done around the same time as this movie. Anyone have it? Or seen it?

Older, but very sexy. She should have taken care of her teeth, though.
The film is so bad that words can't describe it's horrors; but she's the best part of it- so over the top that she's riveting
I think it would have been fascinating to talk with her in her alcoholic days.

@GohModley You're right about this. In fact, it's because of alcohol that Veronica appears with a terrible looks and very aged in this movie.
A litte advice: Avoid to see this trash if possible; it's better remembering the Veronica Lake of the forties.

she was broke and would take anyhting for money at that ime. Can't blame her, it was a matter of survival.

sorry but those teeth were hers, she had lost a few and others were damaged during her last years. She was drunk most of the time during shooting. The movie cost 20 000 dollars and was released years later but almost no one watched it. I think she was paid only a few thousands dollars for that disaster.

@ifyesterday In fact, though released in 1970, it was shot in 1967

Saw this on the most effective triple bill in the history of the drive in film circuit. Proud to have been a witness to history. The evening began with this one, then went to 2000 Maniacs (the best) , then Blood Feast (the worst or tied with Flesh Feast) Before there was torture porn.
