this has been one of my favourite records of all time. i havent listened to this since getting rid of my turntable some 20 years ago. great to hear this master again. off to find blue in green now!
While blacks did play a big role in the beginning of Jazz, none of what we have could have been here without the work of a great many musicians of all races. Blacks may have given the soul, but the great classical tradition of Western Music gave much of the technique many of the jazz masters used when refining Jazz to the point we have today. In truth, various elements we like are all much older than Jazz and do not come from any one place. Either we all get along, or we all make do with less.
ms. jacksdaddy2005 - PLEASE warn me...I was drinking something and bout spit this stuff all OVER my computer I was laughing so hard...yeah baby...I am white as rice but sweetie I must have a brother in the woodpile...cuz truss me dahlin......I CAN KEEP UP
There are good artists and MONSTERS like George Benson, this brother has proved its talent in Blues, Soul, Jazz and Pop. If I recall this song was Billboard #1 in three categories at the same time and also won a song of the year Grammy. Hope his DNA could be preserved for the future generations to enjoy his music.
i´m from Memphis, and i´ll have to agree that the soul of Beale is different than all others...as is with all blues...it comes from the hurt...and all hurt is different...all blues are blessed by God...
@jacksdaddy2005 this is pure soul! George Benson is Pure Soul, Jazz is Pure Soul! Keep it straight, the origin of Jazz is from the Soul of Blacks! Blacks are soul! Their music comes from the Soul! Now their are different variations of music, Jazz, R&B, Rap, So many of which are SOUL BABY!
@cammicty Thanks for your racially biased opinion, but you're wrong. I've been a musician, music store owner, and composer for over 30 years and you obviously don't have a clue. Come back when you grow up..... Lmfao..SOUL BROTHER!!!
@jacksdaddy2005 I am a Soul Sista and a grown ass woman, also with a background in music, and I do know the classifications of music, etc,. @cammicty I feel your pain. let it go. People only beleive what they perceive to be correct. As long as they agree. I read with open eyes your comment. Jackdaddy, I was a 6 time # 1 artist, Wrote and ended my career as a producer and sound engineer at RCA. Whoops, never owned a record store. Jazz came out of Memphis Tn. Not the deeper south. Memphis and New Orleans have a different blend. Jazz morphed into Soul. But what the hell do I know? I m just an old white man that loves it all.
@starr522 wow, that is interesting. i always thought that jazz morphed from the blues in new orleans. you seem to have a considerable pedigree in music so i trust you a bit that jazz came out of memphis. if you had owned a music store then for sure it would be true! ray charles had one, i saw it in the blues brothers documentary. maybe they learned all that jazz from elvis before he was famous.
@viago2 I'm sorry, I must say jazz originated from the slaves bought by Europeans. And while it did expand rapidly from the southern U.S., jazz is from any location people came to when they moved to the Americas with a slave (north, south, east). Jazz music comes from the slaves finding a way to live with their long and stressful work hours by creating music to keep the pace going in the fields.
@cammicty He certainly has soul. Every sound that comes from him comes from the soul, and every musician should aspire to be like him in that respect.
I always loved George Benson's version of this song. He did not write it but produced a beautiful arrangement of it and of course his exceptional singing and guitar playing. This song was actually written by Leon Russell.
Smooth jazz just doesn't get any better, imo. Great vocal, super instrumentation, good balance of voice/music...even the set & the camera work are perfect. This doesn't just sit there on my "favorites" list; I keep coming back every time I want to relax to some mellow sounds.
Benson is the best, I'd say he owns this song but it's not actually his. Leon Russell wrote this. I wish George would dump the cheesy string orchestra
Love the tune and lyrics - co-written by Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett (of Delaney and Bonnie). Bonnie's been on Rosanne's Nuts recently and Leon was reborn with "The Union " album he released with Sir Elton John. If you have not heard "Yhe Union" you may want to check it out!
If only I could've told my ex wife this, THIS way 4 years ago then the split and divorce would have been easier and less expensive. George said it best.."we're lost inside this lonely game we play."
I agree, do these people know anything about real music anymore? And people wonder why the US is falling behind and why all the musicians go overseas to play!

why do they have to mention Bieber in every video in youtube?you are just makin him bigger. The kid ahst killed anybody,he is just another artist of this time of marketing over music. Why hating on him that bad?are britney and the others different?and hes not even 18,leave the kid alone.By the way this performance is so tight mr Georfe Benson legend
I think people who have time to make rude comments really have too much time on their hands - check your own closet before running down others, please all y'all - Act With Respect!!
@CroissantOrange You have no soul. Oh the irony. If you cant appreciate this performance for just how much GROOVE he puts into it, then you sir are the pretentious one.
@CroissantOrange Right. Typical response from someone that doesn't know what he doesn't know. Every kind of music has a groove. Even the pretentious stuff you probably listen to. Since you cant appreciate that, then maybe you should appreciate his performance for its soulful and melodic quality. You should try being a little less snotty. Or barring that, less ignorant.
@Bojazzki Every kind of music has a groove therefore everyfuckingone who listen to music should appreciate only the groove while other quality sounds like shit. Or let me rephrase this: since most musicians nowadays a talentless pieces of shit who can't spent couple of hours a day studying music theory and couple of more to practice that but at the same time still want to be cool and perform, the only thing they can do is "play the GROOVE". It therefore becomes the foremost quality in music.
@CroissantOrange You're not lumping Benson in with what you refer to as "most musicians nowadays are talentless pieces......", are you? George Benson is by general consensus amongst jazz guitarists and aficionados one of the great jazz guitarists of the last 40 years. Just because he makes money and appeals to a wider audience doesnt make him bad, you know. You sound like one of those guys thats angry because no one recognizes what in your own mind, is your own great genius. Give it up, man.
@Bojazzki Heard this before. Same all boring bullshit. "Drum solo, slapping bass, Groove is great!" because even a retarded can tap his feet and shake his hip and pretend to be "in the zone" in front of everyone so them executive fucks can ram their Shitty Groovy Music Dick up your ass some more. This kind of thinking is Political Correctness of music and you sound like them corporate fucks in tie try to pass everything as green and eco-friendly and the world is so beautiful. Fuck off.
Dont come onto this vid and other great music just to rag on beibs. He isnt whats wrong with music these days you idiots, hes just a kid making money, having fun and living out a dream. So stop hating with your jealousy. No one should rag on beibs himself, the only reason hes so famous is caus there are millions and millions of people that actually buy his shit. Just like a beiber fan cant appreciate this, we cant appreciate beiber. Let jazz be jazz and let beibs be beibs
George BENSON's version is 'stop in your tracks' beautiful...but YEAH, LEON RUSSELL penned this one. He's a lil sly one...'SUPERSTAR' was another morsel he helped write.... not bad smash hits for the CARPENTERS & the amazing LUTHER either!! :-)

Yes, This Masquerade was written by Leon Russel. The Carpenters did a better version than this affected Benson wetness.

Pretentious and boring as shit. Even the carpenters were better
CroissantOrange 7 months ago
@CroissantOrange You have no soul. Oh the irony. If you cant appreciate this performance for just how much GROOVE he puts into it, then you sir are the pretentious one.
Bojazzki 6 months ago
@Bojazzki Oh yeah, the GROOVE is what music all about. Fuck off and go back to your drum circle will ya
CroissantOrange 6 months ago
@CroissantOrange Right. Typical response from someone that doesn't know what he doesn't know. Every kind of music has a groove. Even the pretentious stuff you probably listen to. Since you cant appreciate that, then maybe you should appreciate his performance for its soulful and melodic quality. You should try being a little less snotty. Or barring that, less ignorant.
Bojazzki 6 months ago
@Bojazzki Every kind of music has a groove therefore everyfuckingone who listen to music should appreciate only the groove while other quality sounds like shit. Or let me rephrase this: since most musicians nowadays a talentless pieces of shit who can't spent couple of hours a day studying music theory and couple of more to practice that but at the same time still want to be cool and perform, the only thing they can do is "play the GROOVE". It therefore becomes the foremost quality in music.
CroissantOrange 6 months ago
@CroissantOrange You're not lumping Benson in with what you refer to as "most musicians nowadays are talentless pieces......", are you? George Benson is by general consensus amongst jazz guitarists and aficionados one of the great jazz guitarists of the last 40 years. Just because he makes money and appeals to a wider audience doesnt make him bad, you know. You sound like one of those guys thats angry because no one recognizes what in your own mind, is your own great genius. Give it up, man.

@Bojazzki Miss the point. Read again.
