Did all of you just forget the HUGE transportation problems?? The UNPRECEDENTED media and technology problems?? The t-shirts "Don 't blame me, i voted for Athens"??The over the top commercialism?? The lack of information and security?? For the VAST majority worldwide consider the Atlanta Olympics as the worst in decades...
Thank God Atlanta won the games. Athens NEVER had the infrastructure to host the 1996 olympics. People forget that in 2004, when Athens hosted the olympics, it was already March and some of the stadiums weren't even finished. Thier main stadium was completed two months before the games opened! If Athens hosted the 1996 games, it would have been a disaster!
@M71994 Not to mention shortage of Hotel Rooms.Which is why Athens had to bring in Cruise Ships as well encourage residents in Athens to offer rent to visitors.
i miss the 90's in atlanta. i could feel my heart racing as he was about to say it as if i were there. its amazing that i till feel that way after 21 years
why you erasied the othrer citie candidates and i want to see them but next time it's atlanta is bidding agian no erasing the others caus i want to know what about it ok?
i went to the 1996 olympic games with my family and it was the best scenery of my childhood. we went to the opening and closing ceremonies and that was great. the worst part was the bombing that happened in the park but out of all the games were an improvement to the city's lifestyle.
Man, I was 5 years old and so proud to be from Atlanta!!! This was a big deal...if you were in Atlanta - you sure as h*ll remember this. Right up there with some of the Braves moments like Sid Bream sliding into home. People went nuts, this put Atlanta on the map. And yeah Atlanta has some problems, but every city does (uh, last time I checked Greece has a few problems lol) and it's just about showing love and working hard to support and improve wherever you are from. I have love for Greece 2.
I was 12 years old then.....i was crying 4 days and days...after Athens lost the games. That was the last day a drank CocaColla.......ha ha ha. The revange of Athens came 7 years later...when Atlanta had the worst olympic games EVER.

@MrKappasdio Really I seem to remember Athens having the most difficult time completing venues on time and let's not talk about the poorest ticket sales Ive ever seen.....
The shots of the crowd watching with the big ATLANTA in the middle - I remember that the only outlet that did not have that on the screen was CNN. They just had 'Atlanta" on the right, with their usual (at the time) CNN Live identification on the left.
I had the most amazing time during the 96 olympics. It was a pleasure being able to meet folks from all over the world, and bud world down at centennial park was fun too. ; )
I live in Atlanta and I remember the Olympics in 96....it's probably the greatest thing that's happened to the city. It changed us for the better, and I admire how well the city handled itself during the Olympics.
I thought these games where a great oppertunity for the American South to be put on the world stage to showcase the change, diversity, passion and rich culture that thrives in that area and try to overcome their less than perfect history. I would equate it to South Africa winning the 2010 World Cup bid.
Because the U.S. won the Cold War or about to win the Cold War, IOC chose Atlanta for that reason. They realized that the 1984 Olympics of Los Angeles was boycotted by the USSR and its communist states. So, they chose Atlanta in that these games won't be boycotted because the USSR ceased to exist. Notice that this event happened in September 1990, a month before Germany reunited (October 3, 1990). The IOC also did not like the USSR or its satellite states.
This was one of my proudest moments as an Atlantan. I was at work at the IRS when this happened. In such a stuffy atmosphere, there was not an eruption of applause. Instead there were gasps and squeals. It was all rather comical.

As an Australian I think that these games were brought as Coca Cola threatened to withdraw their sponsorship to the Olympic Games. How funny that the Coca Cola Headquarters are in Atlanta. Melbourne and Athens were more worthy contenders than Atlanta. Till this day still I still feel dark if this descision.
Oh Dear Lord, Strike...this was over 19 years ago!
Drink a Coke and GET OVER IT!! Athens got to host in 2004 and Sydney (which a way nicer than Melbourne) got to host in 2000!
If you feel so "dark" by an event that happen almost 20 years ago, then get involved and do what you can to get Melbourne as a future candidate city. It is better than wasting time making the same bloody post with baseless accusations in other YouTube clips.
@wickedfan5172 All the medals??? There were almost 1000 medals handed out in Beijing. The USA took 110 of them, and while that's impressive, that's certainly not "all".
Coke never threatened to take away their sponsoship. Athens was very arrogant in their presentation, infact one Athens official demanded that Athens recieve the games.
I was born two yrs later after the announcement. Just looking at Atlanta almost 20 yrs ago just amazes me Wow, Chuck Dowdle, Bill Hartman, Monica Kaufmann, and David Chandley, they're still working on the same TV station. I hope Atlanta tries to go for another Olympic bid. Again, wow, Atlanta 20 yrs ago.

@geos331 We didn't have to file for bankruptcy after the Games, though, thank you very much.

You are right. IOC chose Atlanta as a reward for the US winning the Cold War. The USSR was going through hell at this time in 1990.
majumdaa 1 year ago
So, basically IOC rewarded the USA to host the Olympics again for winning the Cold War.

How the IOC would come to regret this most stupendously erroneous decision six years later...

Since IOC hates US so much, we should stop trying to get the actual Games and just settle for all the medals.
