That was a good Illinois team. Liberty never panned out. To say they were better, than MI though I dont know, pretty close. Rice was no doubt the best player on either team. He had by far the best pro career of anyone playing in that game.
I loved that Illinois team.....in my opinion...they were the best team in the nation that year.....michigan was extremely lucky to beat seton hall in final...illionis would have destroyed seton hall.
The Flyin' Illini remain UI basketball gods. They charged into the Final Four 20 years ago, only to lose to a Michigan team they had beaten twice, 96-84 and 89-73. Neither won the Big Ten championship that year.
This video is for Illini fans to appreciate the talent and flair that the Flying Illini displayed not what michigan did. Yeah I know michigan won this game but people remember Flyin Illini from 1989 for their showmanship and skill all year not that michigan won 1 game against them.
I'm a Michigan student from Illinois, so I like both teams (obviously Michigan more, though). I don't have any problem with the video, and I would agree if you said that illinois was the most talented team in 1989 and 2005. But they can only be the best team if they win the most important game, not blame it on the refs or lucky bounces.
As a whole season, the ILLINI were the best team overall, similar to 2005. This was one of the more exciting final fours in the past 30 years. The ''flying illini'' were the first team i thought that wore baggy shorts , and played with the most of their abilities.
Great ending to this game!

Kendall Gill had a 15 year NBA career and Nick Anderson was a number 1 pick for Orlando. So they did alright.

Rice could score but Nick Anderson did everything and was the better all around player. Maybe rice could be 6th man on that team, lol.

I didn't realize that this is the closest thing to a highlight reel michigan has of their 89 team. That wasn't my intention.

Didn't Illinois beat u guys tonight? Think it's 12 in a row at Champaign.

Yeah Illini beat michigan 2 out of 3 and got beat on a lucky bounce. Think the 2 wins were by more than 20 each. The best team doesn't always win.
