I guess we all have to do pick ups from the hips as a counter, kinda like at 0:53. Sucks. Also we can pick the leg after doing techniques like o ouchi gari.
Time for all of you Judoka's to come over to Jiu Jitsu and sub wrestling if you haven't already. If you haven't had any JJ training, it only takes about 6 months of good solid training for a good Judoka to start putting the smack down on everyone. Judo plus JJ unstoppable = grappler.
I guess I can see the argument by some judokas who say this will result in seeing "better Judo" during competitions.
If I was watching some of these guys and I didn't know what a gi was I would probably be saying "Why are these guys wearing their pajamas instead of their singlets?"
But, there are also good points made in the counter arguments like it's weakening/dumbing down the sport.
But, goddamn if a Judo throw isn't the most painful way to get tossed.
The rule change is better, people dont go in now and stay away then dive in which isn't proper judo, and a majority of these throws would still be legal in the video because they are counters, which doing kata guruma or te guruma if your opponant has a cross grip or gone into a throw is still legal
@TheMikethegeorge1 Judoist??? its Judoka, and i am one myself, not saying im the best or anything, just another humble student of the art. And belive me, most Judoka would agree that the regulations involved in tournaments and the olympics greatly limit Judo for the worse.
The way I understood the new rule change is that you cannot GRIP the pants of your opponent. You can still place your hand on their leg to perform kata guruma but chances are the judges would get it wrong and see it as a grip.
@Redrojarr I won't miss them. This just creates an opening for people to create innovative ways to do Guruma's... They already have as a matter of a fact. They made one that works off of a secondary attack (which is what the new rules demand)
If you don't miss these techniques, you're not a true judoka. These techniques are a part of the curriculum and do not cause serious harm to the opponent. They should be allowed.
@rutgerzat Hahaha, wow you have quite some ignorance on you? You think this is the first time rules have been added? I bet some of the early Judokas (During Kano's time) knew some really fucked up throws that could cause great harm... And they might say YOUR no "true" Judoka because you don't use those throws. Who are you to say what a true Judoka is? We're you their in the beginning?? DID you train with Kano?? Did you create Judo??? No? Well don't act like you know what a true Judoka is...
@armarywepons well apparently the new rules are only in effect untill after the 2012 olympics. so in theory they could change back after then but i doubt it very much. i saw a russian judoka do a nice kata guruma without the leg grab in a recent match
same, especially against bigger guys. Once a jujitsu guy came to randori and he was using all strength like most judo begginers and leaning into me. He must be 20kg+ heavier than me, i pulled him forward as he was pushing and he stepped out with his left leg and i swept it before it planted on the floor and straight down he went. I love them because their so simple yet so effective.
I am a blue belt, and I was fighting a brown belt. When he crossed his feet I saw this great opportunity and was in fact a little laughing while throwing him. Foot sweeps rock!
same about a year ago i was at a grading and i was the smallest there 66kg and had to fight someone like 80kg+ I was taller than the other despite being 5ft8 and i noticed he was much much stronger didn't know what to do and he basically charged forward with his grip and i managed to sweep him on the step forward. Got a nice round of applause and i loved it. Big fan of footsweeps.
Not sure why you think it is illegal. It is not kani basami which has been illegal for some time. It is a sort of ko uchi in an uchimata position, but wiht a hand grabbing at the right knee.
I'm 99% nothing wrong, though if the knee was injured, it would be destroyed.
It was used at Athens 2004, so I think there is a small chance of it being legal. But, I think if it were to be illegal, it would be because it puts too much stress on the knee, like kawazu gake.
Are you being serious, they've banned kata guruma? Even a drop kata guruma? WTF!
