FUCK CARLOS ALOMAR,HE WAS OBVIOUSLY INFLUENCED BY GODFATHER MUSIC WHEN HE WAS IN HIS BAND,QUESTION IS WHO RIPPED WHO OFF, I LET PEOPLE WHO KNOWS GODFATHER MUSIC. JAMES BROWN IS ANOTHER NAME FOR FUNK, THE ORIGINATOR.
Does make difference for the Black man to be rippin off the White man's music for a change. Here's the rub, Carlos Alomar was workin in the JBs and developed this riff while he was in James' employ. There has been much said about the riff not actually originating with Alomar either but being handed down during his JB sessions. This was clearly James Brown tryin to make a point [like he did with AWB]. Whatever way if either was a hit, a writ woulda followed.
Wikipedia says - " His 1976 single "Hot" (I Need To Be Loved, Loved, Loved, Loved)" (R&B #31) borrowed the main riff from "Fame" by David Bowie, not the other way around as was often believed. The riff was provided to "Fame" co-writers John Lennon and Bowie by guitarist Carlos Alomar. Carlos Alomar said once that he wanted to sue James Brown, but Bowie told him "Let's wait and see if it's a hit first". It wasn't, so they didn't bother.
It's not a sample (samplers didn't start appearing until the very early 80s. It's actually just a ripoff - James Brown played 'Fame' to his band and they built on it and recorded it as 'Hot (I need to be loved, loved, loved)....
Carlos Alomar - Bowie's guitarist at the time - had previously played in Brown's band !
@pascal3121 sample doesn't have to mean that its the actual recording (like in rap songs), the term sampling can refer to borrowing a riff, beat, or bass line. smart ass
even if Brown took it from Bowie, the breakdown from 2:23 to about 3:09 sets the record straight, he's still The Godfather

@crouchhill No one's questioning Brown's influence to funk but that doesn't change the fact that this is an obvious ripoff.

Wow this is interesting. I never even knew that James Brown did this joint.
This may be a late question but,...Did James get the idea from David Bowie or was it the other way around???
Just curious. (by the JB's being such a funk based band, one would think Bowie got from Brown)
:-)
What ever the case may be good music is good music no matter who plays it. The riff is very funky.
Peace
