Why is he an idiot? I did that once with a fresh install just to see what would happen too. It's called curiousity.

Not: rm -rf /

you're an idiot. rm -rf / is the same thing as rm -rf /*

the only difference is that freebsd blocks you from running rm -rf / because they know it's a common mistake and nobody will ever want to delete their / directory.
