I don't know if you can get the same stuff in the US, but in Germany where I live you can buy specially designed nets similar to a soccer goal for your garden. The net is awesome, because the ball don't bounce off it so they all lie at the bottom of the net and are easy to collect. It is also quite high, a bit higher than your setup, so you can stand a bit farther away. Used to play like that at my grandparents' place, but know they moved out and i don't have a garden cos I live in the city :(
