Lions know they can kill quickly but, if they despise their opponent, they will torture them. That's what happened to this hyena. The lion paralyzed him then tortured him. He finally decided to end it. Lions usually torture if there's personal animosity. Otherwise they end it quickly. Like us, lions aren't born with the knowledge of how to hunt and kill. It's something they are actively taught by their parents (using small, easy prey, like baby gazelles) as they grow up.
