With the title THE MOB, i AUTOMATICALLY think of The Sopranos or the Cosa Nostra or Jimmy Fratiano in THE LAST MAFIOSO The Feds indicted 22 mobsters in Toledo so the lady on the evening news suggesteed reading Ovid Demaris' THE LAST MAFIOSO!!! Well, I ahte the Feds or the Police state or the CIA too! I read about one third of that gangster bio until he described the sensation of murdering his own best friend. I heard him dsecribe THE ITALLIAN ROPE TRICK like Tony Soprano did to a RAT on TV.
Wrong actually. It refers to the area of coverage provided by each mast, which is called a "cell". When you move around, you go from one cell to the next.
Actually, the term cell phone comes from the type of data packet it uses. It is a fixed length packet of 51 bytes that is called a cell packet. Hense the term cell phone. And now everyone knows that I am a consumate nerd. :•)
I've heard that in Europe they have both cell phones (use radio waves to communicate with transmission towers, which in turn communicate with a satellite) and sat-phones (communicate directly with a satellite). In the U.S., Pres. Bush decided not to allow sat-phones, so only cell phones are permitted for civilian use. Therefore, it makes sense to use the term "mobile phone" in Europe and "cell phone" in the U.S.

Is cell phone correct? What a daft question! Girl you are in Amerika now. If you want to use ´mobile´ go ahead. If you want to think that there is a ´correct´ way or even suggest that ´cell´ is incorrect then you can just take your mobile fanny back to whatever Slavic kingdom you came from.
You are just a stupid American. Mobile is used in Europe and if you are such a Nazi and think that USA is the only country worth living in, am glad for the financial crysis.
And screw you, I don't give a shit about my bad english.
There called cellphones because the location the phone call is transmitted from is within a certain hexagonal shaped coverage zone called a cell which has one to three base stations or celltowers within each cell to handle the call.
Since I live in the People's Repbulic of Maryland, in the US, I call it a cell phone. When I am talking to my Russian wife, Российская жена, I call it "mobilnik!"

Hi Marina, in france we use more Mobile than Celullar, by opposite @ the Quebec where they use more Celullar.. i guess it's the american touch who decides fo them
The term is correct. The entire system is a cellular telecommunications system. It's the entire system. When you speak of a telephone (or transceiver tower) that's part of the system, you are speaking of a "cellular telecommunications system telephone (or transceiver tower)." No one wants to say all that, so we shorten it to the first and last syllables, cell phone. It's as appropriate as saying "phone" instead of "telephone."
'Cell phone' isn't correct because the network is cellular, but the phone is mobile.
Since we are talking about the phone itself, mobile phone is the proper terminology. It's a phone that's mobile. Much like home phones that we call 'cordless phones' because they're phones without cords. We don't call them 5.8GHz frequency phones, we call them cordless phones, which is why it makes little sense to refer to the network when describing a device that merely operates on it.
The term cell phone refers to the cellular pattern of the areas of coverage, A cellular tower covers a circular area only so big. Another tower would be set up to add to the coverage area. Since the phone network is made up of these "cell's" the use of the term "cell phone" is appropriate. Also it's only 1 syllable to say "cell" compared to the three for "mobile". I wonder what J Addison and Jonathan Swift would thing of cell phone texting, the horror of it all. cuL8r i<3u lol
lol kellymichelley, well I suppose it depends on who is saying it. I think the Brits would say mo´●bi●le. But you're right, here in the US we would simple say mo´●bile in two syllables
its called a cell because the areas that the signal for these phones are divided, are pentagons or hexagons (cant remember the shape) so together they look like a bunch of cells and its called mobile because you can take it anywhere...most people call it phone though
