That is only partly true. Those 'powerful' blacks did so because those who did not had their lands taken and people killed or set into slavery. It was a method of extortion and they were trying to save their society at the sacrafice of some of their people.
When possible, to save their kin, they would sell captured people from other areas. They were required to provide the slave-traders with a quota of people and the traders did not care where they came from.

Africa is a continent of tribes. Not just one mass population of blacks. In our eyes, Africa is a failure because of the disease and the poverty. But if the Europeans never went there, I would consider Africa to be tribal and not a western civilization. Just because a person doesn't have indoor plumbing, doesn't mean they are failures. It's just that at a certain point in the nation's economic development, slavery was a backwards force and the industrial sector said enough. Sadly working class and poor whites have been pitted against blacks, latinos and native peoples to steal their land. These annexations of vast territories are an indisputable historical fact.
