  • is atkins only for people that are really big? im about 20lbs overweight. will it still work for me?

  • @323block I talk about this very topic in a video for does Atkins work for all groups (men - women, morbid obese vs. 10-20 pound to lose crew) posted here on Youtube. The short answer is yes, but sometimes people with only 20 pounds aren't willing to invest the time to learn the diet and keep the weight off long term. Looking at the Atkins Diet facebook or forums, you can find many success stories from all groups.

  • Hi bowulf, I totally agree with you, I started 8 days ago "for the rest of my life" :) But people will use this as a "quick fix 'diet' " & then revert back to the way things were before, eating junk. That may sound harsh but after all the research, reading listening & watching I have done,it ALL makes so much sense.I would greatly encourage everyone to read Dr Atkins book.We have all been spoon fed wrong science in our diet for 50+ yrs! But sadly it still has a hold on most :(

  • ive been on induction for three months and have lost 30 lbs. but now my weight loss has stopped. should i move to owl? how long did you stay on induction?

  • @xjun2001 I stayed on Induction for nearly 12 months, but that is not necessarily prescriptive... Many people lose more on OWL than Induction. Check out my video on "how long should I stay on induction?"

  • @xjun2001 you're lucky! I lost the first 2 weeks now in week 3 I've lost nothing and gained 0.88lbs! I think you can stay on induction (extended) depending on how much you want to lose. I need to lose a whole person off me so I am staying on extended induction as long as I can stand it!

  • Hi I was on the Atkins last year. I lost 2 and half stone (I'm British). I stupidly gave it up and went back to unhealthy eating. Now I am on the Atkins again. I have been on it for just over a week. this time I have lost very little. Last year I lost loads. I must admit that I have had a few vodkas and slimline tonic because I thought they were low in Carbs. I'm trying to be stricter now. Is my weight loss normal or should it be quicker than this?

  • @bowulf Kool have a great time in vegas thanks for the help :P also am gunna post some more videos over next week as there is a festival on in my town kool take care and thanks again :D :P

  • @bowulf Hey am starting to notice the weight loss now thanks youtube buddy :) I have lost 3 inches round my waist and my face is smaller if you go on my page you will see in my most recent video my cover of mylie cyrus goodbye :P Thanks :P

  • @gaupaenazul Very cool... It is always great to see when the inches start dropping away. I'll be sure to watch your video when I get back home from Vegas.

  • @bowulf .....because I was feeling hungry and haddent got the hang of it so let me give you an example I hear this is easier to do in uk as the labels so here my example : Day 5 yesterday friday 26/8/11 2x eggs 100g lettuce 50g spinach 3x small slices of ham a dizzle of ranch dressing 1x cup of decafinated tea ax rsp of splenda ax tsp of cream 25mls basically of cream that's for breakfast basically scrambled eggs with salad. Lunch: 1x half a renderized steak im sure was 16 oz's 100g lettuce ....

  • @bowulf Hi there that's helpful very helpful I have been eating well I have listed it each say since I started so for example well only got the hang of it over the last two days I started out really losey as was hungry so had snacked on two tbsp of peanut butter into the second say I was really struggling have been reading the books say I am going through sugar withdrawls so have noticed from how im counting it I have come from 150 g of carb on the first day down to 20 on the 6th I think...above

  • Hi I keep going over my 20g of carbs a day by 20 or 40g because im hungry can you give me some advice on how I do induction have been doing it for 4days starting to feel im not craving sugar as much but i was a big sugar eater I used to eat 2 tubs of ben and jerry's once a week 2 packets of chewy sweets and anything like cupcakes chocolate spread on toast coffee with sugar 3tsp and

  • @gaupaenazul Just remember two things it is net carbs, so be sure to subtract fiber from your total. The second thing is to ensure your fat grams are high enough. Approximately 65% of your Calories should be coming from Fat. That level of fat should help kick in ketosis which has an appetite suppression effect. What have you been eating each day?

  • well I don't even know if im counting my carbs right but am thinking to have gone from so much sugar to low carb so quickly 20g is my body rejecting it anyways would be appreciative of some advice here as I' am failing miserably and want to do this but im hungry all the time and veg does not fill me up :(

  • mr bowulf i am in the medical field and i am on my feet 7 hrs out of an 8 hr day 4 days a wk can i add that as exercise my job is also physically demanding. Another ? is i lost 11 lbs in one wk now my weight is flucuating btwn 4 lbs is this ok its like i gain 4 lbs after dinner i know the scale is a bad thing but i guess i use it to validate if im doing the diet right

  • @covergirl1313 My weight will fluctuate during the day quite a bit, so that is the reason to pick a consistent time to weigh yourself. You are encouraged to add exercise as you feel you can. Most people need at least 2 weeks to acclimate to the diet before their athletic performance returns.

  • I lost 60 pounds on the Atkins Diet some years ago. Was very happy. Gained it back. About to start again but i remember feeling like i was going to throw up the first week. Is that normal. Not looking forward to that again. Is that a side effect of going into ketosis?

  • @starlight8605 Nausea is one of the effects of the appetite suppression. It isn't always nauseous, and it can be from having the same thing over and over again. You can help yourself by keeping a varied Induction friendly diet, drinking your water, and ensuring you get enough of electrolytes.

  • I am super hesitant to start a diet where you force ketoacidosis it is unhealthy and dangerous even fatal. I think Im just going to stick to regular excercise and eating not trying to kill myself.

  • @LuLu6214 FYI - you go into ketosis not ketoacidosis. There is a big difference between the two. Non-diabetic can not enter ketoacidosis, which occurs in the presence of high carb, and ketosis, which low carbers do enter, occur only in the presence of low carbohydrate consumption.

Check out my ketosis vs. ketoacidosis for more information if you care to be more educated, but you have to decide for yourself what is most likely to get you to goal.

  • I lost quite a bit of weight on atkins but i still dont feel like im reading the back of labels properly and in New zealand its hard to find a wide variety of sugar free products...how much sweetner am i allowed on atkins?

  • @robinhowardjohnson For the most part I don't eat many specific sugar free products. Most things (90-99%) are really just regular foods that are naturally low carb or out of ingredients that are naturally low carb. I never had a huge sweet tooth before, so it was not much of impediment. You are allowed 3 artificial sweeteners per day.

  • I've only been on the Atkins for three days, but I noticed an increase of urination. Is that normal?

  • @ahwilane2 Yes, it is normal. In the first part of the diet, the body is burning through the stored glycogen before it gets into ketosis, and glycogen is two parts water to one part glucose. So it is a bit diuretic in the first week as you purge excess water from your body, and hence the urination.

  • @ahwilane2 I had that too. I heard its because all the carb. you had in your body was storing water...and now when you arent giving the body carb. the same way, you will pee more.

  • I started atkins after seeing your success story video. I started on march 18th 2011. I am now down 30 lbs on April 11th. Start weight was 296 and now at 266-267. At first I wasn't taking supplements but soon learned why I would need them. I would get really bad leg cramps. After starting a multi vitamin, fish oil, and L-carnitine the leg cramps vanished. I am thinking about moving away from induction now onto the next stage. I wanted to say thank you so much for making your videos.

  • @wckdkl0wn You might try additionally things like salt substitutes, like Morton No Salt or Salt Lite. Most people are low in electrolytes when they initially start the diet due to the initial diuretic effect. Congrats on your awesome success!

  • @bowulf Thanks for the tip. I will look into that today when I go shopping.

  • Your videos are excellent and motivational. I suffer from headaches which tends to sabatoge me a little because if i eat carbs they go away. Any suggestions? Do you know why co-enzyme 10 is good?

  • @50hellkat2 Check out my Induction Flu video on why the headaches might be occuring. Dehydration, low electrolytes, and the body getting acclimated to burning fat for fuel are some of the top reasons. One of the prime suggestions in the new book is to drink 1-2 cups of full sodium chicken broth daily.

Re: CoQ-10 (check out my supplement video for a better explanation) basically makes the mitochondria better able to metabolize fatty acids for fuel.

  • Are we certain on the "calories don't count"? I started today with the induction and found myself overating I guess because I kept thinking of sugar. I ate from foods that are induction appropriate. I have the book and going thorugh it too. And bty - I love your videos.

  • Thank u so much.I will check it out 4 sure.Have a wonderful day.

  • Please help I want to start on induction.I only have 25 lbs.to lose I was hoping u could tell me what foods shall I eat what's allowed on induction and how many calories shall I have per day? Please help...Thanks in advance!

  • @chiquitababy5 Check out my "Can I eat this on Induction?" video. It talks about what is allowed and what isn't. It also includes links to the Acceptable Foods List that you can print out and follow.

Calories really don't need to be counted (except if you are eating too few of them). Check out my "Should I count Calories on Induction?" for a more complete answer.

  • i'm doing this diet.. AGAIN. trying and trying. last year i lost 30pounds but couldnt control my cheating and bingering -_- so i gained it back but not any higher. i just kinda gave up and ket eating.

SOOOOO i started again almost 11 days ago.. and i've already lost ten pounds.. and my cravings are not even bad anymore. maybe it's kitosis, i don't even know. but thank god <3

  • Can you drink diet tonic water with saccharin I drink a lot of water and have not cheated and can you also eat broccoli in moderation during induction cause I have

  • @TheMimimocha510 Check out my "Can I eat this on Induction?" video. It talks about what is allowed and what isn't. Broccoli is a once cup per day vegetable.

Diet Tonic water can also be drank, but you need to count it against daily sweetener limit of 3 servings.

  • i dotn have any life since i gained my weight

somedays i dotn move around to much

is there any viatmins that can help?

  • @cherd1971 CoQ-10 and L-Carnitine can help metabolize fat and thereby help give you energy.

  • Hi, my problem is that i don't move around a lot, i'm kind of lethargic person. I sit in an office chair all day and when i'm not doing that i'm in bed or on my PC.

I've seen a lot of atkins success stories where for a split second they mention that they also play tennis or jog or go to the gym, but they never say if it's a requirement.

Do i need to start going to the gym?

  • @HaxorLee I work a pretty sedentary job and never did exercise consistently before Atkins. For the first month of Atkins, I did not exercise and lost over 35 pounds. The most important thing is getting the eating right initially. Exercise while necessary to look good is not necessary right away.

After Atkins and that first month, I had more energy than ever before and my working out naturally flowed from that. At 400 pounds, my exercise when I started wasn't more than walking/elliptical.

  • @bowulf can you give me a sample diet of what you ate to lose 35lbs, i.m 5'10 244 lbs and want to lose 50 pounds fast

  • @buckwheat40 If you only have 50 pounds to lose, what I ate to lose my first 35 pounds of 210 pounds will not give you the same results. You'll lose, but you won't lose at the same rate. Plus I am worried that losing fast indicates not wanting to make long term changes. You may lose the weight on Atkins, but if you aren't looking to make long term changes, it'll just bring short terms results.

Then you might be back at 244 6 months after quitting the diet.

  • I was told that if you take it off slowly it will stay off longer! What is your opinion about that? I am 5'4" and weigh 272 I want to be 150 I started Atkins on Monday July 26th at that time I weighed 279 is that a good progression ?

  • @barbara4u850 I actually made a video on this topic -- "Atkins Diet Quick Hits: How fast should I lose?", so if you want a better answer on the topic, check out that video. The short answer I lost at a rate of 4+ pounds a week over 15 months. At a perhaps faster than suggested, I have kept that weight off for over 5 years.

You have a good start, but one of the most important things about Induction is not necessarily the weight loss but ensuring the eating is done right. The WL will come.

  • u can lose 10 pounds on induction in 5 days 9 lbs water and 1pound of fat...maybe

  • @e334r I lost 18 pounds on Induction, and that was not all water weight. Even if it was 10 pounds water weight, that still equals 8 pounds of visceral fat lost after the glycogen burn off. Additionally, I lost 193 MORE pounds after that. I went from 47% body fat to 11% body fat.

Using those numbers, I lost over the course of the diet 178 pounds of fat. Someone once told me that is a lot.

  • @e334r BTW you never response to your comment about the diet of lethargic peoples. When was the last marathon you ran? It would seem you need a high energy diet like Atkins.

  • Anyone have suggestions on how to do this diet safely? I've heard a lot of horror stories about heart disease and what not, I'd just like to know if it's a good idea to stick with this diet.

  • @SoltaTararan I would say follow the diet as described in the book, and you'll be golden. Trying to do uber-Atkins or Turbo-Atkins by either taking pills, thinking zero carb has to be better than low carb, doing low fat and low Calorie at the same time as low carb are all recipes to putting yourself in a bad position. As for stickin with the diet, it is intended to be a lifelong approach to food, but there are phases for each stage.

  • @bowulf Noted. Thanks.

  • i am 200 pounds weight.. i need to lose 60-70 pounds, how long it will take if i follow your guides ? is it need to detoxification on induction 14 days ? and how many exercises i have to do in a week ? is it like 3 times a week or else ? sorry if i ask so many questions in my first comment :)

  • @hiru231 Sorry like this video said it's impossible for me to say how long it will take. It might take 2 months or 6 months, but either way you'll be eating healthier than ever before.

As for working out, when I first started it was 3-4 times a week for what I could (15 minutes). Now I am working out (running and lifting weights) 5-7 days a week for 1-2 hours at a time.

  • i've lost 20 pounds so far on induction, 1 and a half week in.

  • @PairoftheSocks Congrats that is fantastic progress... Keep it going, and don't discouraged if the amount next week is smaller. You are on a great start.

  • I need to lose 30 pounds and but I'm kind of afraid of going on Atkins because I am a full time college student and really need to be able to think clearly. Doesn't this diet make you feel terrible ( both mentally and physically) the first couple of weeks?

  • @leftwingnazi Check out my Induction flu video and my low carb zombie videos. The short answer is while you may be out of sorts -- you are dramatically how you eat and about the same as a marathoner hitting the wall, the feeling is temporary. It also doesn't hit everyone the same way. In fact, I get lots of reports of why am I not feeling the "flu?"

My job is highly technical and design oriented, and I personally have not had any problems with mental acuity.

  • thanku so much for the response :) truly appreciate it!

  • sorry but yes my mayo(i usually use salad creme) does contain added sugar :( & i eat whenever im hungry which is every 3-4 hrs...

  • i have to lose 22 pounds...my water intake is ample,i consume more than 3 litres daily as im home all day...breakfast is usually 3 egg omelet with mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, green chillies and a slice of cheddar cheese....i snack on kraft's mozzarella string cheese, piece of chicken with mayo/creme, 2 cups green with lemon....lunch is half a roast chicken with whipping creme, mayo, splenda all mixed together to make a sweet tasting sauce...dinner is lamb kebabs with rocca salad or caesar salad

  • As the video and the video notes say, " It's also natural to be curious to see how much you will lose on Induction (typically 5-10% of your total weightloss goal)." So at 2.2 pounds down already, you are doing great at 10 percent lost with another week to go. I can understand perhaps the frustration or desire to be at goal already, but you are on track. You are just one of the smarter ones who didn't need to lose 50, 100, or like me 200 pounds.

  • kent im on day 7 of the induction phase & ive lost ONLY 1 kg = 2.2 pounds :( i mean another week & i wudve lost ONLY 2kgs=4 pounds?? :( y is the weigh loss so incredibly slow for me??

  • How much weight do you have to lose? What are your menus like? Are you drinking enough water?

  • you will for sure lose the amount that you will lose.

  • Very true - all the angst and stress about how much should be focused elsewhere.

  • and.... does anyone EVER notice or hear the 4.2..... 3.7 ....... 1.4 ... 1.1 decimal point syndrome ???

pssst..people " drop the point thing" round it off.... it's only adding fuel to the neurosis.... It's so irrelevant ! Not necessary to split hairs . Average it out over time ... that's ACCURATE !

  • Addendum... oh yeah .. and

About those weighing themselves every 3 hours .... stop !!! that's about as insane as it gets ! again... wait, wait ,wait... you will see a more accurate picture... than

fretting over minute numbers 10 times a day ... far more rewarding. try every month on the day you 'start" whatever it is you start ... we're far too addicted to hourly weigh..ins

  • good video just finished induction and dropped 15 pounds.

  • That is an awesome start. Congrats!

  • after being on atkins for a reasonable amount of time does your body become even less tolerant of carbs, meaning will you gain weight even faster if choose to introduce carbs back into your diet.

  • Sorry lots of misconceptions in this post:

Actually the opposite happens for most people. Their insulin resistance is lessened, and their bodies are more tolerant of carbs.

    "to introduce carbs back"

Carbs are always in the Atkins Diet. I will take it you actually meant MORE carbs back into the diet, and that is actually part of the second step of the diet. You know the one that follows the first 14 days. It's called the Ongoing Weight Loss phase, and you find out your CCLL.

  • If you want the scientific study regarding the improvement of insulin resistance and tolerance for carbs, check out Jeff Volek's (PhD) multiple studies on insulin resistance and ketogenic diets. Here's just one of them - "Carbohydrate restriction improves the features of Metabolic Syndrome"

  • Don't take it to hard and don't be harsh, It was just a joke if you didn't understand.

  • I have a question. If you continue induction past the 2 week period, will you continue to lose weight as rapidly as you did for the first 2? Or, does it slow down quite a bit? Thank you very much for any answers

  • It slows down a bit for most. I lost 18 pounds on Induction, and then 4-5 pounds a week after that.

  • I love to see how dark purple i can get my strips ! lol! I just bring a tooth brush and paste and mouth wash where ever Iam ...lol. but please answer my question about dyhration and if that will turn the strips as dark as i can get it...

  • ok I'm going for it.

There must be a way I can lose 15 pounds in 14 days. I have good momentum. I'm using ketostix mild ketosis. I intend to drink only water for three days and then introduce just 10 or 15g of carbs plus plenty of excercise and fats especially olives and some cashews and some avocado meat too if I feel light on it. wish me luck. -any comments about fasting on water for 3days? I'll sleep alot too. I have a big musical concert to play I need good energy. any encouraging words? :-)

  • My suggestion would be never do anything for weight loss that you couldn't do long term. The water fast seems so short term, temporary, and not worth hassle if the weight will simply return afterwords.

  • Bowulf sincere thanks for your reply regarding the Duke study...

I have been enjoying following what some people are calling eco-atkins... a ketogenic diet but easy on the meat.

I have lost 9 pounds out of a target 24 pounds. I have seven days to lose 15 pounds... I'm willing to excercise like crazy if need be and I'm willing to eat steak and bacon, but I'm feeling lighter with basically lettuce tomatoes olives sprouts oil vinegar sometimes cashews each meal is under 9.4g net carbs ... help!

  • You can certainly eat according to your tastes. My only concern with eco-Atkins is that it doesn't become an amalgamation of Low Carb and Low Fat. If you are keeping your Fat intake up (have to fuel your body with something) and are happy with less meat, go for it.

That's really the beauty of Atkins. It can account for all different tastes and menus. That flexibility really is what made the diet work for me -- I could live within these broad rules, and succeed.

  • QUESTION FOR BOWULF.

I'M losing nicely on low carb eating and I have a female buddy who dissaproves of the whole Atkins low carb eating life style. I need material that specifically supports Atkins lifestyle for women. We have encountered articles which say men lose 2x more weight on low carbs as on low fat, but women don't lose more at all on low carbs.

    Peace :-)

    yoodig-

    Peace :-)

  • If you check out the Duke study and additionally the nurses study, they demonstrated that they all lost more weight on low carb than the ones that were following low fat. Personally, I don't think gender affects how insulin and glucose sensitivity relates to a person. Certainly, guys may tend to lose more quickly, but I know women who have lost 5-10 pounds in a single week on ketogenic diets.

  • Hello Kent, end of my second week back on Atkins and have lost 12 lbs... feel better than I have since I did this for the first 100 lbs loss... thanks for your help. I was wondering if our bodies actually use the dietary fat we eat for fuel first or does it use our body fat for fuel? how does that work exactly? liver breaks down the protien for energy and the ketones that are produced also help with fuel, but I did not understand the fat for fuel aspect. can you help explain? thanks :) SLIMQUEST

  • I just started, and in 2 weeks i've lost 10 lbs, like 10% of my goal, and i'm not doing exercise, i've also decided to extend the induction phase for 2 more weeks, I read that It's allowed, also cuz I kind of broke the diet when I went out drinking with some friends...lol, so I decided I should do more of the 1st phase. Good luck to everyone else on this diet. =)

  • yeah i do that,,if i on the rare occasion go out for a few drinks i go straight back on induction for a few days, that sorts me out

  • hi ya, ive been sitting here watching loads of ur videos, and im just getting more confused lol, wot can i eat during induction, wot cant i eat???? wot foods do i have 2 add again after induction, i once did a liquid diet that you produced keytones in and i lost 12lb the 1st week, but i felt like i was going 2 die, i had 2 stop it, ive ordered a meal booklet, but i just need 2 no a list of what 2 eat during induction, can i have t?? milk in it?? sugar?? x

  • You can have tea (decaf), no milk, no sugar.

Watch my "Atkins Diet Induction Foods: The Good, the Bad, and the Pork Rinds" video. It lists each one. Ideally you would read the 2002 DANDR book, and be guaranteed success. It's only $1 at most book stores or $.01 at Amazon. Chapter 11 tells you everything you need to know.

Alternatively you can google "Atkins Induction Acceptable Food List," and you get a good list too. 500 characters is just not enough to list the foods and the rules.

  • hi i have just started the atkins diet and i was wondering how many days it takes to start the keytosis because this is my second day on it and i dont want to eat anything and i am getting the flu like symptoms and i am following the diet very strictly

  • Usually you will be in ketosis within 2-5 days of starting as your body burns off the remaining glycogen within your body. Chances are you are entering ketosis now. Good job, and you are starting your weight loss journey.

  • are garlics good to eat?

  • Yes, it is fine to eat and good for the heart.

  • I actually tried the Aitkins diet about 5 years ago...only diet that I've experienced to be simple and work...

I wasn't ever really "overweight" but I had wanted to be toned like I was in high school...I lost 35 lbs in a month....175 down to 140(which is what I wrestled at)....so I pretty much lost TOO much haha...

  • Congrats on your success! That is impressive -- hopefully keeping it off as been as easy as losing it.

  • I like the green paint better in the background..

  • Thank my wife - she was the color coordinator for the house.

  • wait i'm sorry, but what is INDUCTION in the form of dieting?

  • It is the first 14 days of the Atkins Diet. Check out some of my first videos to understand what you can eat and what you can't eat during Induction.

  • thanks for answering me all thetime! I have a question about how many splendas or diet sodas can you have in a day during induction diet? Thanks

  • 3 artificial sweeteners per day.

  • can i drink whey protein on this diet?there are some low carb ones,i was thinking maybe mixing in it cream instead of milk cause i guess it won't taste good in water

  • After induction, you can drink these drinks. I did on the OWL phase to recover from workouts, and only used water -- which is how they were recommended to be prepared.

Induction is about simplifying the diet and catching any unknown sensitivities, and then you can start adding to it in OWL.

  • I am on week 3 on this diet, I really miss my veggies!!!! I love my veggies, but If I want to stay under 20 carbs a day, I cant have any.

SORRY ,,, I HAD TO VENT LOL

  • Which veggies do you miss? There are lots of veggies you can have under 20g per day. I was just reading a website today detailing that fact on what was under 20g: * 8 avocados, or * 64 spears of asparagus, or * 6 cups of cucumber, or * 44 cups of iceberg lettuce, or * 52 cups of spinach, or * 400 radishes, orwell you get the point.

Obviously tomatoes and onions are 1 cup, but broccoli and cauliflower once OWL hits you can have cups and cups of them.

  • I cant beleive how many carbs a can of corn has in it . But I do eat a lot of my 2nd favorite , mushrooms..

I have lost 18 lbs already. I have not went through all your vidoes yet, but I was just wondering how often did you have "cheat" days?

I also love going to the gym, I try to go 5 days a week, but with a 3 year old and a 2 years old sometimes I cant.

I am so glad that I found your videos

    Thanks

  • Yep, corn is not considered a vegetable. It's considered a starch or a grain, so it's reserved for latter rungs of OWL.

Congrats on the weight loss! That is impressive amount for three weeks.

As for cheat days, I have made a couple of videos on this topic, but the short answers is never. I didn't have cheat days as I didn't think they were worth the hassle or additional stress. It was easier for me doing the same plan every day as opposed to planning for an upcoming cheat day.

  • i did induction a few years ago ( im doing a reinduction today) i lost 16 pounds in the two weeks

  • Congrats on restarting Induction today. I am making a video today about the Golden Shot theory that may interest you. Good luck and if you need anything just holler.

  • I lost 16 lbs also when I started the diet too

  • one more quickie.. should i be taking any vitamins during induction. i remember i used to take some years ago when i was on the diet.. i think it was like fish oil and flax seed.....i could have been wrong but i thought i would double check. thanks for the advice and making the videos.. they are really helpful when your like me a work from home mother w/no way to get to the library..Thanks

  • I made a supplement video what I recommend what I would take, and I would encourage you to watch that one. The short answer is all you need is a multi-. There are certain unique cases where more supplements might be desired, but they aren't needed.

  • sorry to bug you again.. i haven't done the diet since 2002 and if i remember correctly the first two weeks it was 13 a day, but i forgot if it was nessecary to use all 13?? ok thanks AnH

  • just wanted to know do you have to eat all the carbs (per day)for induction, or can you just do meat, cheese and eggs for the first 2 weeks?

  • I would not suggest just a meat, cheese, egg diet as boredom may set in really quick and there are nutrients you would be missing. The correct amount is 20g per day, but you don't need to nail that number each day 10-20 is fine. Just try to eat your 3 cups of salad veggies or 2 cups salad / 1 cup other veggies.

I'd encourage you to brush up with the book (Chap 11) that will explain everything or watch the Induction videos here.

  • Hi! I need to lose around 30-40 pounds. What do I need to do to get started? Where can I find information. I have recently started walking. I'm up to 2 miles per day. I am hoping to work running into my plan. You really seem to have it all together. This is a great inspiration to me. I could really use your advice. Thanks

  • I made a video on this exact subject it's under the Atkins Quick Hits series, so you may want to watch that. The short answer is first buy the book (Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution 2002 - you can find it for a $1 at many bookstores or libraries). Read at least chapter 11, but really it's a quick read.

Get your house full of the necessary food items. Take the Atkins Induction Food List to the grocer with you. Commit to yourself for 14 days doing it right.

    Just start eating right then.

  • I love your videos! I have a question: I just finished my 2nd week of the diet. During the 1st week I lost 11 pounds. In the 2nd week I lost only 2 pounds and I actually gained a pound yesterday. What could I be doing wrong? I'm basically eating meat/cheese/eggs in small amounts (I eat until full but not over-full) and I make sure anything I put in my mouth has no carbs. I know the huge weight loss would not continue, but why would I lose so little the 2nd week? Why would I gain a pound?

  • First, watch my video that I specifically deal with is this a zero carb or the eliminate all sugars videos. I am slightly concerned at the lack of veggies and would encourage you to get at least 1 or 2 cups per day of low carb green leafy veggies.

The reason for the less weight loss in the second week is often the body taking the op to readjust itself. Google Post Induction Stall Syndrome. As why a pound up, that is likely hydration difference. Don't be alarmed and keep following the rules.

  • Sorry to bother you again, but what do you think about soysauce mixed with butter, as a sauce?

  • Like I said in a previous post, take my tweaks with a grain of salt as it is really early to start worrying.

As for soy sauce, it should be fine, but I would be simply start be cognizant of your sodium intake. Soy cheese (tofu) is allowed in limited portions on Induction, but if you are celiac or wheat sensitive, soy sauce does contain trace.

  • Hi Bowulf; quick question. I can easily do induction for 6 months (I read online this was ok) as I have no desire to eat while on this diet. But I won't do it at the expense of my health. Your thoughts?

  • I did Induction for nearly 12 months, so doing it for more than 2 or 4 weeks is not a problem. The only thing after 12 months my doctor recommended was for me to eat 1 oz of nuts per day; other than that, my blood work and doc could not have been more positive.

  • Thanks for the response. These videos are a great help for all of us on Atkins and we really appreciate it. Thx.

  • I posted my menu under the 14 day induction. Everyone said not to be a slave to the scale, but I read other people's posts and they all seem to lose, so fast. I would like to lose 50lbs. Can I eat a lot of pork rhines without counting it as a carb? I will go ahead and post here what I ate yesterday. 2 small celery stalks w/cream cheese. steak w/cheese, mushrooms fried in 1 TBSP butter on top, 1 boiled egg, and pork skins. I ate a lot of the pork skins through out the day.

  • My initial reaction was much the same. Don't obsess about the scale yet -- you are just starting. Others' weight loss is just that; everyone's journey is different. Was I envious of the guy who lost 100 pounds in basically 3 months? Sure, but I got their eventually. I bet they told you measure yourself as well as the scale does not tell all.

As for you menu, it actually looks a lite on the food and Calories. If I had to tweak anything, it would be less pork rinds (sodium) and eat more.

  • I feel so sad. I have been on induction for a few days, have not cheated once, and I have not lost anything. I've been eating 2 cups of induction friendly veggies, meat, eggs, 2oz of cheese, pork rhines for a snack, drinking only water. I dn't understand why I have not lost at least 1lb. I did discover mayo has suger in it even, if it says 0 carbs, but I only had 2 tsp in tuna once and eggs once. I joined atkins bullitien board, so I know I'm eating right. =(

  • Don't get wrapped too much in weight. It is still REALLY early. I would not make any judgments or changes until the 2 weeks are up. Additionally, how much weight do you have to lose? Have you posted your menus at ADBB?

  • Meeeeeeeeeeeeeh, what's up, Doc?

  • Hey.

  • Bowulf,

During the Induction phase, is it a good idea to exercise.. I am worried the Flu might make it really hard.. ? Should someone press through and exercise?

  • It is my belief that Induction or the first 14 days should be about getting your eating right. You should overcome that hurdle before going on and attempting anything new. So if you can exercise great, if not there is plenty of time to start that habit afterwords. Within the first 4 weeks though, you should be able to start or resume your exercise plans. If you can within the first 14 days, great -- but I would not beat myself up if I could not.

  • hi first off congrats on ur success, i recently am startin da atkins n currently weigh 130 lbs n need to lose bout 10lbs. my question is what should my daily caloric intake should be and plus how much exercise do i need to do(eg 30minz a day)?

    thank u

  • To be honest, I never cared or contributed my success regarding what my daily Calories were. My only real concern about my Calories were that I ate enough (prevent starvation mode) not to a limit and then stop. A reasonable bottom for you would be about 1300-1500, so make sure you eat over that amount.

How much should you do? At least 20-30 minutes of HIIT (higher intensity stuff) 4 or 5 days a week. If you aren't at that level yet, start with a less intense exercise and work up to it.

  • ok thank u

  • can i eat the white fats in the bacon?

can i eat the skin of the chicken if its not fried chicken?

  • yes... fats are good

  • Yes, fats should be the primary source of energy on this diet. No matter how you cook (fry, bake, broil, roast, etc.) as long as you aren't coating with flour you are free to eat it.

  • i only needed to lose 15 lbs and lost 10 lbs in 2 weeks during induction.

  • How long does it take, from the start of the induction for the body to go into ketosis?

  • Typically 3-5 days depending on the glycogen stores in one's body and the amount of activity one does.

  • Your eyes are amazing...

  • thanks.. good video.

  • hello again :) thank you soo much for your response! and i actualy just got on a scale ! its been 2 weeks today and i lost 15 lbs ! :) im soo happy , im not too sure if its actually all fat bit still that number looks great:D, im guessing i was worrying too much about calories wich i would tend to do but its going well, thank you again :) i will certainly check out the menus.

  • Congrats on your success!!! That is fantastic progress.

  • to shorten it ,i eat too much of the low carb stuff, like steak and eggs :P and end up eating about 2500 calories a day and alot of fat but under 20 carbs for sure:)

  • If you are still needing help, I post some menus of what you are eating for 2-3 days at Atkins forums like AtkinsDietBulletinBoard or lowcarbfriends. They may spot what you might be missing. Your daily Calorie ratios during Induction should be about 65% Fat/30% Protein/5% Carbs.

  • hello there :)i realy enjoy your videos and i am just wondering, i am on induction and my weiht loss is not going to speedy :P its been about 9 days. should i cut back on my food intake? i seem to eat alot of butter with eggs shrimp etc. and i eat about 3 eggs for breakfast and snack on 1/2 lb of bacon but i make sure i fry well haha, i enjoy spinich and shrimp 4 supper but i end up eating a bag of spinich, because by the time its boiled it makes about a cup and a half:P thanks:)

    katherine:)

  • Spinach is an item that should be measured raw not cooked. Remember during Induction, that it is more than just eating less than 20g per day. There are limits on things like cheese, and while you can eat liberally of meat, you should only eat until satisfied. Would I cut down what I was eating? No, I would continue to eat according to the rules. If I still hadn't lost ANY weight (less than 2%) after 3-4 weeks, I would eliminate certain items like dairy -- a notable staller for many.

  • I dont like when you enter your motherly lecture mode. I.E., regarding the question "How much weight can I lose on Induction?" Yes, the answer is relative to each person; but then you often slip into concerns regarding the dieter's motives & mindset. Just answer the question without the psychoanalytical pep talk. Dont lecture on the matter of the dieter's motive. That's peripheral. You subordinated and subsumed the original topic. The real answer is rooted in science and health. Not psychiatry.

  • So the video was more a reaction to the posts, Atkins Diet is a failure because I didn't lose the weight quick enough or the reports that I was on the Diet years ago but gained all the weight back. I might have read one too many media reports that the low carb diets don't work, so to me the people's motivation is key to long term success. Losing the weight is perhaps the easier challenge; it is keeping it off that is the real challenge. Recidivism is a very touchy subject for me. :-)

  • Oh, and I don't remember if SODIUM is a factor.. Olives are very salty. Can I have pickles? I'm on my third day and I'm running out of ideas. The real problem for me is taking lunch to work. It takes a lot longer to prepare everything than to make a sandwich or rice & meat in tupperware.

  • You can have 10 olives as a snack item, and pickles are brined cucumbers. Cucumbers are Induction legal, so yes you can have Dill pickles. I for lunch when I brown bag will usually take a chicken fajita salad, which takes no time (the chicken is made on Sunday for the week and refigerated.)

  • O.k ... now I'm pissed off here! That last message was the 2nd part of my questions. Where the hell did the first one go? In case I posted it somewhere else... here it goes again:

Please check out google by typing in "Returning to Atkin's after 4 years". I'm really worried it won't work this time for me. There are also limitations on cheese (4oz) and nuts. What else CAN'T I have?

  • Google Atkins Induction Food List, and it will lead you to the ultimate list of what you CAN have. Don't focus on what you can't have as that only leads to cravings. Check out low carb recipe sites (Like Linda's Low Carb) to find new ways to cook old favorites and find new easy recipes.

  • Well, since you seem to be acquainted with google, it might be in your best interest to utilize it. You'll learn a lot more if you research this stuff yourself than if you just run around youtube being snotty and demanding with people who give of their own time to help others. I'm afraid the low-carb lifestyle is not going to fix your attitude.

  • Get used to it, unless you develop a taste for real food you'll always yoyo back and forth, that's why dr atkins stayed unhealthy w/heart trouble, obesity and didn't even live to the avg life expectancy.

There is no magic wand and fad diets seeking quick results while destroying organs w/inefficient diet.

  • crisology; Dr. Atkins died from falling on the ice and banging his head!

  • he suffered from hypertension (high blood pressure) and some acute myocardial infarctions (small heart attacks) only weeks before the fall. Realistically, he could have been having one of these heart attacks as he was walking infront of his apartment, passed out, and conked his head on the pavement. The truth is: nobody knows how he died; his medical records have been witheld. Of course, Atkins corporation will always contend that it was the fall.

  • Read some non-prejudiced reports about his death that exclude the hand written notes perhaps written by the Anti-Atkins doctor. Either way, my hypertension has dropped through the floor since starting Atkins. My blood work is much better than it ever was before.

  • I read both sides. Dr Atkins had ongoing heart trouble & difficulty maintaining healthy weight. While some people get away w/increasing cholesterol or juggling HDL w/LDL, the secondary energy source from protein overdose & digestion requires twice the metabolic energy. So you're burning organs along w/calories, whether it's the liver, heart, skin, colon, etc. The specific disease outcome & time of onset vary. It's not magical, work is being done by organs instead of muscles through exercise.

  • If dealing with a genetic heart condition is your "ongoing heart trouble," so be it. Maintaining healthy weight, he was 195 @ 6' tall when he checked into the hospital and was playing competitive tennis in the few months before he died. So even though my annual physical blood work , which show my LDL (95) and total cholesterol (145) have dropped 50 points each and liver and kidney function tests are great, you insinuate I am still on the precipice of organ failure. Excuse me while I laugh.

  • But we don't know it was genetic. We only know that high fat/protein overdose in theory & epidimiology studies provide evidence that heart trouble is more common w/such fad diets or fake paleolithic diets.

Sounds like your cholesterol has made improvements over I don't know what u ate before but it wasn't a frugivore diet. cholesterol level is not the only index of health. There are no buffers for insults to numerous other organs from high protein diets limiting ph, bowel movements, carbs.

  • Sure, the cholesterol indicator is not the only indicator, which is why I listed the other function tests (such as uric acid, globulin, A/G ratio, triglycerides) results. My regularity was TMI IMO.

Again please answer my question on what you believe the Atkins Diet is or what the suggested menus include. Visit the "Review my menu" forums at AtkinsDietBulletinBoard, which happens to be the 26k members support forum I administrate.

  • With a natural diet there is no need to test cholesterol levels since humans already synthesize all necessary cholesterol. Any exogenous cholesterol would only compete w/real food absorption, trying to "balance" HDL w/LDL as a compensation/treatment.

I will go back & look at latest atkins diet version if I can make sense of any parameters for protein, fat intake. Ketosis is a secondary energy source that taxes organs. With exercise & natural diet, there is no need to put strain on organs.

  • Here's an easy rule of thumb for fat-protein-carb ratio of Caloric intake for Induction (65%:30%:5%)to Maintenance (50-60%:30%:10-20%). Again with the mysterious strain on organs that is unable to be accounted for by any tests or physical examincation whatsoever. Ketosis is a natural state that all people enter during any period greater than 8 hours without food intake.

  • Mom's milk naturally has <6% protein. Did God make a mistake? Under "rule of thumb" u ingest ~200 g protein a day.

Ketosis may be natural after 8 hrs. But atkins uses secondary energy source as unnatural primary source the body isn't designed for.

High fat diets involve galanin addiction. The same mechanism by which ppl crave sugary processed starch except more galanin is created eating meat. It's a constant struggle for atkins to temper cravings rather than end galanin/casomorphin addiction.

  • Are we infants for ever? Is mother's milk the model for all future diets? I typically eat between 140-175g of protein per day, which is inline with many other rec. for athletic people. (1.2-1.6g per kg of body weight) Hence, Atkins is medium protein diet.

Funny, I don't have to "temper cravings" for fat or meat. In fact, it was only after being on Atkins that I didn't have cravings whether it be for fat or sugary items. It's partially appetite suppression why it works.

  • Breast milk is THE perfect food/specialized for each species. Milk protein concentrations reduce to 3% after 3 months because the baby is not developing tissue as fast. ALL babies require proportionately higher protein concentrations than the most active adults who can never grow at the same rate. Check a full protein recommendation chart adjusted for age/weight. Your protein is off the charts.

Of course u don't feel fat cravings on atkins because u indulge in fat nonstop.

  • Breast milk is geared for one thing alone -- nourishing infants. Infants have a dramatically different nutrition requirement than do adults. "Check a full protein recommendation chart adjusted for age/weight" -- did you not read I did do it - the recommendation is 1.2-1.6g per kg of body weight. If you aren't reading what I write, then there is no point discussing it anymore.

  • How is the body not designed for ketosis or using fat as a fuel source? The ATP pathways are there. People use them everyday. There are cultures that have used these fuel sources for centuries and had equivalent life-spans as other people. Again, it is not addiction anymore than you returning this thread is an addiction. It's a matter of choice.

  • I explained the body is adapted to use ketosis as secondary source of energy, not primary. Cultures u allude to are far from native habitat w/pathetic life expectancies. I didn't
