Well,technically I'm 'reducing' the hot wares in a combustible media. this is where the black clay body is formed and all the really cool black cracks come from. then we take the pot and quench it in water to stop the colors changing (if it has colors)
Easy raku clay body -- 50% talc 50% ball clay :)

do you ever worry about the vessels cracking when you put them in water because of the temperature change?

Nope- Raku clay is a highly 'refractory' clay body, but it does happen! about 1 in every 20 will pop.
