I strongly suggest that LDS members review all of the interviews that Gordon B. Hinckley had, with the various media: including the Mike Wallace; Larry King, & T. Brokaw interviews. (also a Swiss guy who interviewed Hinckley, in 2002...during the Olympics).

Joseph Smith, Jr., believed in the Lorenzo Snow couplet...& preached it up, at the funeral of a man named Follett. Hinckley who "held his breath until he become prophit" said, "It's just a couplet".

A temple has been announced for Rome. It will be completed within the next couple of years. There are already many LDS church meeting houses there. The Church has a very good relationship with the Catholic church. We have agreed to disagree on some doctrine, but intelligent people of all faiths must unite and face the evil forces that are gaining power in the world. I don't think either church would want to claim you unless you sincerely repent and become a civilized follower of Christ.

To emphasize this point Paul merely mentions that "they" (apparently some of the Christian converts) were having themselves baptized for their deceased friends and relatives, hoping that through such a vicarious baptism these dead people might be assured of some share in Christ's redemption. In line with his argument Paul's rhetorical question is clear: "Why bother if there is no resurrection?" Paul never approves of such a baptism in verse 29

A careful reading of the entire 15th chapter of I Corinthians will show what Paul really had in mind when he penned this 29th verse. Paul was writing about the resurrection, life after death. He wished to impress upon the minds of his converts that true Christians must hold on in spite of many trials and sufferings in this life for their new faith. A better life awaited them in the next world.

In Luke 16:19-31 here is the dramatic story Jesus told about the awful treatment the poor man Lazarus received from the rich man. Both died. Lazarus was saved and the rich man went to hell. The story is so lengthy I will quote only the pertinent part. The rich man in such torment in hell begs Abraham to send Lazarus with water to ease his sufferings. And Abraham replies:

There are two more statements of Christ against this Mormon practice. Matthew 18:8 reads:

"Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee cut them off, and cast them from thee; it is better for thee to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into EVERLASTING FIRE."

LDS people could save themselves such bother if they would read carefully the entire 25th chapter of St. Matthew's gospel. In the last fifteen verses Jesus speaks about the last judgement. There is not even a hint about salvation for those who live wicked lives here on earth. Jesus says there is simply no opportunity for salvation in the next world for such dead spirits. You only go around once.

Yes, I am--where in the New Testament do you find the plurality of gods, celestial marriage, polygamy, a divine curse on black people, manadatory 10% tithing, baptism for the dead (in contrast to Luke 16:19-31), Jesus having wives and children. None of these are scriptural; so your claim to Christ is invalid.

Some of the things you listed are NOT tenets of the LDS faith. Take for example "Jesus having wives and children". This is not taught in the LDS Church, nor is a "divine curse".

Additionally, there is Biblical scripture that supports tithing (Malachi), baptism for the dead (1 Corinthians 15), Jesus, God and the Holy Ghost as three separate beings (John 17), polygamy being practiced by prophets of the Lord (Abraham, Isaac, etc.) though polygamy is no longer practiced in the LDS Church, etc.

First of all, we don't need everything to appear in the Bible, because we believe in modern prophets who are just as authoritative as Moses, Elijah, Peter, and Paul were. However, there are many evidences in the Bible of the things you mentioned. Some of them are definitive, and some are merely supportive.

What I most object to is your assertion that our "claim to Christ is invalid," because of differing doctrines. I believe that Jesus died for me, and I lay claim to Him.

The true church of Christ must be fruitful: If we look at any history book or book on the lives of the Saints, we see repeated missions by Saints in every country in every lifetime to overturn idolatry, paganism, and convert others to the true Church, many at the expense of their own lives. Did Our Lord not ask His Apostles to do so? "Go ye into the whole world, and preach the gospel to every creature" Mark 16:16.
