Drove this july 2nd 2011 on the BMW Motorrad Days in Garmisch, must say it is a very nice bike. BMW states now that it has 202 bhp in its folder. Semi auto gearchange is suffisticated. Heavy on the wrists but hard accelleration in all gears. Handles well on Metzler tires. . . . There are cracks appearing in my Ducati 900 SSC '97 model. . . . well, it's over 15 years of development taking its toll. . . .
Wow, was für eine Rakete. Grandioses Motorrad, technisch absolut Spitze.
BRAVO!!!
@6string34639 I'd disagree, I own the S1000rr, and it is the 2nd bike I have every ridden......the 1st being the 250cc I did my test on. I ride every weekend at the Moto GP Losail circuit here in Qatar and I've found it a great bike to learn on! Stable, predictable, and unbelievably smooth to ride. I'm a very competent rider now, and can take on most seasoned riders around the track. If you have the cash and you think you have the natural talent, then go ahead, I've not looked back!

I just read a test in a dutch magazine. The power of this bike is amazing. It has 205hp, and the best japanese bike scored only 182 hp on the same dyno. The least powerfull bike was the aprilia rsv 4 with 177 hp
The funny thing is, is that the aprilia had the quickest laptimes(professional race rider)
power isn't everything, but the others really have something to worry about.
If BMW's are so good, why aren't they leading the SBK World Championship? Two teams with such renown names like Corser, Xaus, Tamada or Pitt and they're nowhere to be seen.
Why can't anyone design a statement bike properly? For instance, the turn signals should be swept back...a innovative, German core aviational trait. BMW shouldn't have left any corner uncovered. Its surprising that anyone attempting to produce a hardcore, technologically stellar bike would overlook 3rd-order design details. BMW could have devastated the competition with a price not more than $1000 over their price.
What a bunch of ridiculous, candy-ass novices. When will there be a constructor serious enough to step up to the plate and deliver an absolute quantum leap of a bike? Not this incremental BULLSHIT with horrible esthetics. Fucking novices.

Weight reduction has done alot for modern 1000cc bikes... you can even look at the pure dimensions of todays liter class, they are like 600cc bikes ... light, super power and agile... ok, my KTM with 65 HP and 123kg can eat all of them in tight corners.... but thats all it can do :)
I agree. !000cc bikes are pretty close to the weight of a 600. But a 600cc bike's are still lighter. And can match or exceed the speed of a 1000cc bike in the turns. But be out ecellorated in the straits. If you have a street bike. Race someone even if its the same size. Let them get the jump on you and see how hard it is to catch back up with them. If a 600cc bike gets about 2 to 3 bike lengths on a 1000cc bike. That bike is going to have to work like hell to catch it.
You really have max speed limits of 120km/h? But.. ok, we have speed limits too, but, thats not the end of the world, there are miles and miles of roads where you can drive any way you like :) (Croatia ;)
Yes max legal speed of 75mph/120km/h. But I have been 150mph+ and I've seen people do 185mph+ or 280km/h. But if your caught doing it your going to get arrested pay fines and yout insurance is going to go up alot.
I hope they know more then I do about engines. I'm sure the engineers designed th engine to meet their criteria. What ever type of racing they wanted it to be designed for. But I do know this bike would get its ass kicked in a dragrace against my 1994 honda.
@1137rr: Well, all supersport bikes are made for high revs, so if you start from lower revs, you need some time to get to the real power... unless you have a good feeling for your clutch and throttle, then you can start like hell... ok, never like a single or twin cilinder bikes that have most of their torque on lower and mid revs, but, you`ll catch up really soon. I destroyed many supersport bikes on start with my KTM, but after 100kmh... they go like rockets by me :)
Not all. A friend of mine was lusting to get a 2004-05 kawasaki zx10. Or a 2004 Yamaha R1. He was reading the horsepower numbers of these bikes. About 180HP. His alternative pick was a 2002-03 R1 because the bike he wanted was too expensive. I compared the engine specs of the zx10 and the 04 R1. I told him "The 02 R1 looks like it should be a better bike because of the bore and stroke combo on the 02 R1. this bike ended up being a bike he settled with not what he really wanted.
But it ended up being the bike of his dreams. He raced the bikes he wanted to get the 04 R1 and the ZX10. And whipped their ass. Just about everything he came across he would out perform. Busa, zx14,and newer R1's. The only bike that could out perform him was the GSXR1000. The reason is the bore and stroke combo. The 02 R1 has a 58mm crank. The GSXR1000 has a 59mm crank. Everything else except the busa and zx14 has a 55 or 54 mm crank
And I know you heard about how good the old honda 900rr used to be. The 1993-99 900rr has a 58mm crank. My 1994 900rr is the same weight as this BMW. Look up the specs yourself. SEe to me their is a sweat spot to the crank strike and cyl. bore. and 58mm is it for the stroke. Why did they stop making engines with this combo? Because the torque is so strong at low speeds. If you know someone with a 2000-04 GSXR1000 ask them if you could ride it. Thats if you haven't road one already Their nice
This thing is going to take the pants off all the Jap comers.... Ducati and Aprilia as well.... The 1000rr is a full 30 bhp more than the rest of the litre class competition. We going to be hearing 'BMW' and 'super sports bike' in the same sentence a lot from now.
I honestly didnt know BMW made Sportsbikes.. i knew they made bikes but not sportsbikes.. Hell all I see on street is Suzuki and Honda.. maybe a yamaha or kawasaki
Take a very good look at the front..Then look at the front of the new R6..You will see that they look almost alike..The difference between the 2 is that the r6,the front is more extended out but this bike, keeps it close in..Like the zx10..That head light is the same as the R6 also...Check out the center part of the bike..It also has a triumph look to it also..The difference is that the triumph stripes are painted on.This bike has them cut in the plastic..
no, think about it, there is one single BEST design out there for aerodynamics. As the companies continue to approach this "perfect" design they will all meet up at the same point. Basically all sport bikes look the same at this point cause they are all trying to achieve the same thing which is awesome aerodynamics. Its the same reason that the prius and the new honda insight have the same general shape.
i had atest ride on this bike on saturday on scottish gritty and ice roads and it blew me away ..what a bike ..and i ride a gsxr 1000 .... I WANT ONE AND I WANT IT NOW
I'm proud of BMW. Breaking out of the sport touring (?) thing since the ages and beating the Japanese bikes. What an accomplishment. You can expect an epic response back from the Japanese manufacturers :)
@virus2547 Well i can't get too fast the first 2 years because I'm only allowed to drive it with 25 kw you know. I hope I can overcome the temptation to drive it with 142 kw.^^
I like this bike very much. Those that gripe about the look I cant disagree with your feelings but c'mon if anything this is quintessential BMW; notable stylistic quirks and asymmetry. Something stylistically/mechanically distinctly different so as to differentiate and identify themselves. Old news here..
R U men or wimmin? Looks should be the least of it (that's why I love naked bikes), does it have the kit to do the job at hand? Hell yeah!
Hah. Saw this in person. Its a great looking bike even with the odd design. The BMW dealership that I bought my bike from had some very knowledgeable people working. Then again, it was a Triumph, Ducati and BMW dealer so there were plenty of sportbikes to go around.
there is no perfect world , maybe the challenge to get one will make it all the more worth it. If power is what your after, this price in todays world is nothing. Go bring your wife to a womans purse store, they have the money to buy $20K purses
I will tell you something that is so stupid. In Australia if you wish to buy one of these you have to go to a BMW car dealership as they have taken them all away from real motorbike shops. I am seriously considering buying one of these but I wonder if they will even consider trading my 08 gixer 750 and I don't look forward to dealing with those wankers. Would you say this is a good move when launching a sportsbike? Sounds like the tail wagging the dog to me.
I just went to the launch at a BMW bike shop and they definitely would trade in. However most people there were already BMW riders and didn't understand what a chain was......
I sort of agree with you but I hope you understand where i am coming from. A lot of the other dealerships have trouble getting staff that have a clue so i am skeptical about the bmw dealerships. Maybe I could best express it as imagine if Holden started selling a super car, you would have concerns with, the back up, servicing, advice etc no matter how good the reviews were let alone a decent trade in for your Porsche.
Love to get my hands on that one and take it too the max on a track, just beautiful

Sorry, but I think that guys at BMW know a bit more about engines than you do, so I`ll trust their knowledge :)
sabbathian 2 years ago
I hope they know more then I do about engines. I'm sure the engineers designed th engine to meet their criteria. What ever type of racing they wanted it to be designed for. But I do know this bike would get its ass kicked in a dragrace against my 1994 honda.
1137rr 2 years ago

1137rr 2 years ago
But it ended up being the bike of his dreams. He raced the bikes he wanted to get the 04 R1 and the ZX10. And whipped their ass. Just about everything he came across he would out perform. Busa, zx14,and newer R1's. The only bike that could out perform him was the GSXR1000. The reason is the bore and stroke combo. The 02 R1 has a 58mm crank. The GSXR1000 has a 59mm crank. Everything else except the busa and zx14 has a 55 or 54 mm crank
1137rr 2 years ago
And I know you heard about how good the old honda 900rr used to be. The 1993-99 900rr has a 58mm crank. My 1994 900rr is the same weight as this BMW. Look up the specs yourself. SEe to me their is a sweat spot to the crank strike and cyl. bore. and 58mm is it for the stroke. Why did they stop making engines with this combo? Because the torque is so strong at low speeds. If you know someone with a 2000-04 GSXR1000 ask them if you could ride it. Thats if you haven't road one already Their nice
1137rr 2 years ago
This thing is going to take the pants off all the Jap comers.... Ducati and Aprilia as well.... The 1000rr is a full 30 bhp more than the rest of the litre class competition. We going to be hearing 'BMW' and 'super sports bike' in the same sentence a lot from now.

How come this bike looks like the zx10?
Are kawasaki and bmw on teams or something?

and the yamaha R6?
Duc1198YamR1 2 years ago

I'm proud of BMW. Breaking out of the sport touring (?) thing since the ages and beating the Japanese bikes. What an accomplishment. You can expect an epic response back from the Japanese manufacturers :)

donnermeisterLu 2 years ago 25

StephanRu88 1 year ago
sven91193 1 year ago
FlippDurch 1 year ago 2
666GrimReaper666 2 years ago
Bloodhunter1992 2 years ago

666GrimReaper666 2 years ago

Can't they just not copy things from Japanese manufacturers and just keep producing their "Boxer- Engines" ???(or however it's called in English)

Sounds like the tail wagging the dog to me.
wallnuts11 2 years ago
Rubbish,
I just went to the launch at a BMW bike shop and they definitely would trade in. However most people there were already BMW riders and didn't understand what a chain was......
cavanetb 2 years ago
I sort of agree with you but I hope you understand where i am coming from. A lot of the other dealerships have trouble getting staff that have a clue so i am skeptical about the bmw dealerships. Maybe I could best express it as imagine if Holden started selling a super car, you would have concerns with, the back up, servicing, advice etc no matter how good the reviews were let alone a decent trade in for your Porsche.
