I got a superb deal on a refurb MFC 6490CW from Staples (US$125 after coupon). I had already been using a scanner for approx. 90% of my eBay "product photos," and with the larger scanner on this, it'll be more like 95% of my eBay items where I can use the scanner instead of a digital camera for images. I already had LC61-compatible cartridges (for a DCP-J125) which could also be used with the 6490CW; otherwise, I might have considered something like the J6510DW (approx. US$155 @Amazon.com).
It really DOES sound like this guy works for Brother. I bought this printer to replace a dirty scanner bar on a Canon all-in-1 that would cost more to repair than to replace. Notice how what this guy DOESN'T tell you is how SLOOOOWWWW the scanner is. Your average Canon 4-in-1 can scan text at 300DPI in half the time easy...problem is, Canon only does 8.5x11. sigh. This review is totally biased.
can i ask... i want one of these... but because i am silly... i don't know which is the newest model out of these 2... Brother DCP 6690CW OR Brother MFC 6490CW let me know if you know :D
@saundys Both the models you cited are roughly the same vintage, I think (but check PC Magazine's reviews to make sure). The really new tabloid/A3 size models from Brother, though, are the J6510DW, J6710DW, & J6910DW. All three models do duplex printing (which the 6490CW doesn't); however, if you really need dual paper trays, go with the 6710 or 6910 (the 6510 has just 1). I've seen PC Magazine's reviews of the j6510 & j6710; the J6710 got an Editor's Choice from them.
Brother printers jam non stop (MFC-6490CW). My mother's smaller brother rarely works. We both use mac's. Anyone thinking of buying a brother printer needs their heads examined. Don't waste your money!
Ha! Not at all. I do however promote products I really like. After this review, I set this printer up on my own network, and my wife and I use it daily. It's fabulous! Since using this printer I have a real belief that Brother makes some of the best, affordable printers, so I'll share that... but I don't work for them or anything like that. :)
