I saw him doing this at Sine and was pretty surprised. He really hit those high notes. Really much better than this version. He got a great sound out of his solo Telecaster, too. Even more remarkable was the number of absolutely stunning chicks sitting there sipping their iced espressos and listening to him.
@WatersStillRunDeep I saw him play this at Sin-e in 92, the summer before the live EP was recorded. The audience were all spellbound, (guys and stunning chicks included :D) I feel very blessed to have seen that gig, I was walking home late and heard his angelic voice coming down the street. I am Australian, I was only living in NYC for 3 months...So I made sure I saw him and his band playing in Sydney, Australia, twice, and it was awesome, especially to see how his live performance developed
He was an extraordinary singer. Sometimes I think Sam Cooke is the only singer who matters. Then I listen to Robert Plant, and have to let him in, too. Then I listen to Jeff Buckley again, and have to seriously rethink Cooke and Plant. He has such exquisite control.
@Abrown465 I thought the same thing when I first heard it. It just goes to show how much of a music lover he was. Always special to realize something like that about one of the greats.
fantastic version of this song. grace is a good album and he wrote some good songs on it, but jeff's true talent was as an interpreter of other people's songs.
@mateyboy07 i really strongly disagree with that buckley's lyrical and musical genius lead him to write some of the most complex yet powerful songs ever. the way he combines complex chord structures and varying melodies is astonishing i dont believe anyone has had the talent before or since jeff to express emotions so vividly through music. his talent was just as much (if not more) writing music and poetry as it was interpreting others music
@DavidSmithMusic i think he needed more time to truly express himself with his own songs. the songs he left behind are great and quite clearly betray a talented and sensitive man, but i have always found something distant about them. they are mysteriously beautiful but so vague. had he been given another decade or so he would have lived a life which would have given him the inspiration and experience to write songs that would have allowed us to really connect with and relate to him.
@mateyboy07 i disagree purely for the fact that i don't think he wanted us to connect with him as a person and know all of his experiences. he said he didn't need to be remembered, but he wanted his music to. i suppose in one respect his songwriting was 'vague' in that it's applicable to all of us and most can relate to what he's singing about. but at the same time he was so individual and unique because of his fearlessness, which was at a level that we will never see again.
@mateyboy07 i think you need to listen to my sweetheart the drunk again. morning theft and opened once particularly. those are the most personal lyrics i have ever heard and they can connect with my life in a different way every day.
his voice is angelic.

INTERESTING THAT JEFF IS COVERING THE ORIGINAL NY SESSION VERSION VS. THE OFFICIAL RELEASE RECORDED IN MINNEAPOLIS.

@awaggenspack I can understand why he prefers that version. Like his own music, the NY Sessions were very stark and haunting.

@DavidSmithMusic Agree. Jeff's amazing technical ability to compose is still not widely understood.

@DavidSmithMusic I couldn't have stated it better. Jeff's technical ability is simply astonishing.
