  • As we say it in Holland ( the Netherlands ) Old is gold

  • this was done in those days when the camera still showed the blurry prop spin.... love it. today, it looks like they are not moving.....

    Thanks....

  • 0:15 How are winglettes pisar looking???

  • How are winglettes pisar looking???

  • An absolutly fine machine. I flew in one in Indonesia and they are workhorses that can land on "not perfect" runway surfaces. Island hopping is a piece of piss!

  • "Rock n' roll" YOU SAID IT!!

  • whow greatfull sound, greatfull plane! ;-)

father and grandma scarred, remember its like airattack sound @ww2!!

  • The 1st time I never was in an aircraft was a dc3 it was owned by Wabush mines in n Quebec. The call letters were CWIC.

  • My envy is off the scale.

  • How can you fly a DC3?

  • @crabmaniac1 - Why would you NOT fly a DC3 if the chance came?

  • met les at oxc....nice guy, love the flying mag articles

  • Had my first experience in flight in that airplane in june 2007. A 1 hour trip for 150$ in a 70 year old piece of history. That was great. Thanks to the crew for letting us sit in the cockpit for a while while up in the air. It's a little weird to see all the electronics but everything else was authentic

  • To each his own on the modern equipment. A few modern items add safety although take away from the nostalgic appearance. I got to fly DC-3s for a charter company and 911 seemed to signal the end of the DC-3 flying cargo. So few operators carrying cargo now. There is still simply no replacement for the DC-3. It could carry a heavy load a long way. Love to see them in the air. Don't ever want to see one scrapped- not even an old engineless hulk on an airport. Save them all!

  • Ahhh hearing those engines crank up makes me think about my world war 2 days....wait im only 16

  • The sound is perfect so many vids don't show you how loud the engines are or the microphone can't catch it....

  • OPS!!! Starter engine 2 e depois engine1? Não é contrário? Engine one e após engine thue?

  • I got to fly on this aircraft after the Stuart, FL airshow. First radial engine aircraft I have ever flown in. What a treat, and a very enjoyable ride. The wonderful sound of those 2 radials is something special. The stewardess was dressed in a period uniform. Very cool !!

  • Excellent vid of a beautiful airplane..

  • I THOUGHT ABOUT BUYING ONE A COUPLE YEARS BACK. IT WAS SITTING AT PERSON AIR FIELD VANCOUVER WA. THEY HAD WORK ON IT FOR QUITE AWHILE AND THEN I SAW IT ON E-BAY FOR SALE I BID ON IT BUT THE RES. WAS SET TO HIGH FOR ME SURE WAS A GREAT PLANE THEY DID A NICE JOB ON IT.

  • @cklskypilot YOU ,can't even spell words right, you wingnut. Do you really expect us to believe that you would, or even could, buy ,let alone fly a DC 3. PLEASE! DO NOT PROGRESS BEYOND WHATEVER FLIGHTSIM DREAMWORLD YOU'RE IN.

  • @MrReinluas GOOD MORNING GLAD YOU CAN SPELL BETTER THEN ME SORRY ABOUT CAPS. BUT EYE SIGHT IS GOING CAUSE BY DIABETES ALSO WAITING FOR A BACK SURGERY THROUGH THE VA HOST THIS MIGHT GIVE ME A FEW MORE YEAR OF WALKING THIS IS CAUSE BY A BACK DISEASES THAT I HAVE. LOST MED. CARD TWO YEARS AGO. I HAVE OWNED AND FLOWN MORE PLANES THEN YOU CAN COUNT ON YOUR FINGERS AND TOES TWICE.. I SURE HOPE THAT YOU DON'T GO THROUGH LIFE PREJUDGING PEOPLE THAT YOU DONT KNOW.

  • @cklskypilot DROP DEAD!!

  • @MrReinluas If you can't be pleasant and reasonable.... say NOTHING..

  • @wA7racer HEY SKYPILOT, HERE'S A FLIGHT PLAN FOR YOU. IFR,DIRECT,STRAIGHT TO HELL!!

  • @MrReinluas i wouldn't have expected anything more sensible...

  • Nice video.

It must be the angle of the camera in respect to the propeller blades, but it almost looks like the right propeller blades are pitched more than the left ones at start-up.

I didn't realize, since I'm only a flight simmer, that you can actually see the runway when the tail wheel is still down. A coouple questions if you'd be so kind.

I wonder what the GPH fuel figure you're getting. Is it around 100?

Also, what is the IAS at Vr? Is it about 85 knots?

  • I like that Plane :D

What must I pay for one flight ?! ...expect too much xD

  • Thanks for sharing your video!!! Such an amazing view from the cockpit, also loved how the plane was revved up while sitting at the waiting line. Why do you have to count 12 or 13 blades to start the engines?

  • @BlackWiiOwner2010 i believe its about priming the cylinders and oil flow, I do it on my piper before starting, (hand proping) to reduce cylinder wear by getting oil flowing before high rpm"S

  • @dayllife Thank you for explaining why they were counting the blades. Do you hand start your Piper all the time or do you start it in the cockpit once in a while?

What's you name if you like to share?

  • @BlackWiiOwner2010 Gary is my name <<<but to clear up my explanation i don't hand start,,,,, what I do is with the mags and key off is turn the prop a few turns manually to pump oil from the sump up to the heads before the start so their is no bare metal to metal during normal start-up to reduce wear ,,engine swap is $15,000

  • @dayllife Greetings Gary thanks for introducing yourself. My name is William. I've always enjoyed aircraft since I first saw a plane. My dad flew planes when I was young but he had to stop b/c it just became to expensive. My mom's dad was a pilot for World War II. On the side he flew for fun, sadly he died of cancer when I was little. I wonder if the plane he flew was started by hand. I saw a pic of him flying a Piper cub, it was all yellow with black stripes on it. Thanks for the reply.

  • @BlackWiiOwner2010 One of the reasons they count blades on the start up is to clear the bottom cylinders of excessive oil that has seeped past the rings while the engine has been sitting for a long time. To much oil in the bottom cylinders will hydrolock the engine and do damage. This is why a radial egine smokes alot on start up do the the oil in the bottom cylinders.

  • @azkiid Thank you so much. The cylinders must expensive to maintain and machine. I've watched explanation video's on how a radial engine works, extremely fascinating watching the inner workings.

  • Great video. It's common to see DC-3's in SJU at all times. If you take a look at the cargo terminal there are 5 or 6 being serviced or being loaded with goods for the islands. The partcular sound of those props is distinguishable from all others. A truly venerable aircraft.

  • Great DC-3 video. I went aboard this aircraft at the Lakeland, Florida airshow in 2008. Was that Les Abend in the left seat doing the flying? Think so!

  • DC3s, are cool

  • It's not all that rare to see DC-3's over where I live in saskatchewan. You see them all the time spraying fields of crops outside of Weyburn.

  • Fn SWEET!!!!!! What's the tail number on this bird?

    ~J~

  • Thank you for posting this awesome video!!! I love the DC-3!!!

  • So how much of this plane is stock and how much is new? Looks very cool

  • Excellent film, and thank you for the share. I'll post this on my Facebook for fans of the 'Dakota' DC3. Great share and keep up the flying :-)

  • I've been in love with the DC-3 since I first saw one when I was 10 years old...I'm 63 now and hopefully on my 65th birthday I'll get a DC-3 Add-on to my Private Pilot's License.

  • is that how you prime it? crank with the mags off

  • Not for priming but to distribute the engine oil that accumulates in the bottom cylinders and to prevent the possibility of blowing off the bottom jugs due to hydraulic lock. The procedure is to make one complete revolution of the propellor for each cylinder; minimum would be 9 revs as this is a 9 cylinder raidial engine.

  • Very nice video , make you feel in the cockpit for real. congrats. e.b.

  • Great video and nice plane, Wished I could own and fly one.

  • terrific..love this aircraft...

  • Wonderful! I love these airplanes! I had the opportunity to be a passenger inth e military version a couple years ago at in airshow. (I was a volunteer at the airshow)

A trip in this and a T6 texan (Aeroshow guys) . It was a GREAT day!

  • What's with the oil consumption? Wouldn't tolerances be improved with the rebuild?

  • @transdrole All radial engines smoke on startup after sitting a while.

  • @azkiid right and u can hear that they 're not synched :D (at take off)

  • Comment removed

  • @BruceCarbon If you notice this aircraft doesn't have counter rotating propellers. It is a tail dragger, so there is going to be some P-factor on the take off roll. He may using a little less power on # 2 engine to reduce a pull to the left until the tail comes up and has rudder authority.

  • @azkiid oh ok, thank U :-)

If in europe wasn't so expensive to make a licence then I had one xD

Which licences class do U need to get allowed to fly that DC 3 ? (it hav around 13tons I think...)

  • @BruceCarbon You are right, depending on the model of DC-3 the max takeoff weight is around 26000 pounds. I am sure, here in the United States you need a Transport , multi engine rating plus a ,in type DC-3 rating to collect a paycheck flying the pilot in command seat. It is expensive , here in the states. I just have a private, single engine, land rating. Wish I could afford more. Love the old airplanes from the 1930s thru 1940s.

  • @azkiid Dude pls trust me once: In EU it is much more expensive -.- I know about much people who did their licences in the USA and transcript it to EU version becos its cheaper (with the travels though!)

But yay a ultimate flight is only possible with those good old piston (radial) propeller birds like DC3 :D

  • You should stick to your X-Plane game.

  • @angelica14709 Indeed. there was for the longest time opportunities in FL to fly in one of these. and had the opportunity in knoxville tn a while back to fly in " aluminum overcast " ( a b17. memories i will ALWAYS treasure

  • I don't mind the updated avionics as long as the airframe stays the same.Absolutely the most beautiful plane ever created! I think I'll buy one in the next life. For now I will stick to the RC version...lol.

  • man, that runup was really something

  • way to go captain Abend

  • They fly it everywhere its not a museum piece, when they put it in a museum they will probably remove the modern navigation equipment. Safety primary goal trumps purist wishes. Go to their website to see their schedule.

  • @angelica14709 yep 10/4 on that

  • @angelica14709 i wish it would come around here to east tn. ive flown in aluminum overcast. it had a gps of some sort in it. ( a ww2 b17) i dont see pathetic, i see safe. if hed rather see unsafe aircraft, id rather not be anywhere near an aircraft with him. anyways sir/,ma'am, thank you for allowing me to relive my trip again

  • @Xlay16 You are a peon

  • @Xlay16 You're kidding right?

  • @gladanka corse not

  • @Xlay16 i get the pleasure of riding the colling's foundation planes every summer, and they rock garmin's...do u seriously expect them to not have semi-modern avionics in their planes on every tour...CMON MAN

  • The only replacement for a DC-3 is a DC-3.

  • where can i find a poh for this baby? haha

  • awesome video..and an even more awesome airplane!

  • How many hours of maintenance for every hour of flight?

  • This is a beautiful airplane. And its 72 years old. I use to watch airliners take off and land at Woodrum Field in Roanoke, Va. while growing up. My dad would take me almost every weekend. Back then you could get up close. Piedmont flew the DC-3 then and Eastern had the Martin 404 and American flew the Convair 240 into Roanoke. Only twin engine planes there. But they were all radials and it is great to hear that sound again.

  • i flew in an authentic DC-3 made in 1939 it was mostly or all authentic it looks like its probably older then this... there was no GPS or anything in it just an upgraded radio so im just asking how is this the oldest im not sure

  • This is NC17334 built in 1937 you can look it up in the FAA registry. Most owners of aircraft try to keep up with modern navigational equipment, mostly for the pilots and passengers health. Thanks for your comment.

  • Thanks for such a lovely post! Enjoyed every second of it. Embedding the cockpit with new avionics doesn't necessarily make the aircraft less authentic. I guess it is still more safe with latest boons of avionics than without, especially if the A/C is still flown. I think its a wonder that these 70+ year old birds can still fly and make us gasp at their beauty! Cheers!!

  • @angelica14709 i see were your comin from how yuo upgraded it so it lessens the chance of gee i dont know a crash. your just trying to keep it in the air for as long as you can and they cant see that.

  • WHY IS THE DC 3 SO FAMOUS

  • This from wikipedia .........The Douglas DC-3 is an American fixed-wing, propeller-driven aircraft whose speed and range revolutionized air transport in the 1930s and 1940s. Because of its lasting impact on the airline industry and World War II it is generally regarded as one of the most significant transport aircraft ever made. Many DC-3s are still used to this day in all parts of the world.

  • because it's a beautiful true aircraft

  • Flew from Santiago to Buenos Aires in a DC-3 when Panam's were grounded. Passengers wore oxygen masks (threw up in mine). Downdrafts so bad; wings were flapping like a duck. So relieved when we got to the pampas!!!

  • The airplane has a great record of getting there.

  • @angelica14709

Hmm, you might have a point. Just ask a nice pack of old paratroopers.. :)

  • 650$ per HOUR???? wow this is a lot of money O.O and in Summary if I want to pay all to get the whole licence then it cost some 1000$ right?? :S

  • I love this plane :)....but how much cost a pilot licence???

  • Read the info on the right side click (more info)

  • You need about 70 hours in the air, and about $5000-$7000 before you can get a VFR ticket.

  • O.O I should save my money for this.....

  • While at Long Beach airport in California on June 25th i saw a DC3 take off. Would anyone possibly know who it belongs to. Im curious....

  • Capt. Ron Tallent is the Best!

  • the fokker friendship is a dutch plane

  • The youtube counter on this video is not working since May 2009 .

  • Great Video!!

  • My god, what a beautiful video. I've never seen what goes on inside the cockpit until now.

  • Cobra Rick Wow, did you see my video search "1931 Pitcairn MailWing NC10753 PA-8" Thanks for the comment. History is being recorded in youtube. In the late 1920s, Pitcairn Aviation won a government contract to fly mail between New York City and Atlanta, Georgia, using Mailwing single-engine aircraft. In 1929 Clement Keys, the owner of North American Aviation, purchased Pitcairn. In 1930, Keys changed the company's name to Eastern Air Transport, soon to be known as Eastern Air Lines.

  • Cool video - My grandad flew for Pitcairn Air Mail which then turned into Eastern Air Transport and then Airlines, hired on Dec 1st 1930 seniority #21, his son was hired in '31 with #32. Then my uncle also flew for Eastern after Korea. Will be nice to see a DC-3 in early Eastern livery - have always thought that was the best looking paintjob for an airline before they went to the "hockeystick" logo.

  • Cobra Rick .........What was your uncle's name, did he fly in the service, what aircraft did he fly? He has friends out here.

  • Rick replied..............About my grandad/uncles, was Uncle James "Jim" Shelly Charles Jr. - he flew P-47's in the Guard, and F-84's in Korea with the 49th Fighter Bomber Group "Screamin' Demons" then got on with Eastern (forget what year), retired in '84. The other was Paul Charles, he also flew for Pitcairn Air Mail and Eastern, also held the world record for longest inverted flight for some length of time, haha.

  • did you know this plane took 2 weeks to design and be built and is one of the safest planes ever going !!!!

  • The Douglas DC-2 was a 14 seat, twin-propeller airliner produced by the Douglas Aircraft Corporation starting in 1934. It competed with the Boeing 247. In 1935 Douglas produced a larger version called the DC-3, which became one of the most successful airplanes in history. Two weeks might be a stretch.

  • haha I'm amazed at how often pilots forget to unlock the tailwheel and it takes them so long to figure out why the plane won't turn! Not everything can be on a checklist. There's also a comment about burning less fuel than "that cherokee". Sure.. if "that cherokee" burns more than 80 gallons an hour. (7:30)

  • The title is "DC3 and a touch of Humor". These are experienced airline pilots. Thanks for your comment and the viewing.

  • simply awesome :)

  • One of the best old girls ever. Awesome vid.

  • radial engine, simply genius

  • the whole aircraft is simply genius. they are old flying tanks. extremely, tough, and durable. if taken care of they will fly for ever. what a great aircraft.

  • Aaaw... old DC :) Those prop planes are like muscle cars :) Even the sound they make gives shivers :)

  • Great video! This is why I love old aircraft you get a real sense of flying instead of haveing a computer fly for you. Wheres the fun in that! Again great video this is one of my favrote planes ever, one day ill fly in one hopefully!

  • Superb! Best film of startup checklist I've seen; I'm looking for the approach & landing film with checklist and I hope it'll be as excellent!

  • Ive sat in her before, they brought her to the MacDill Airfest in 2007 down here in Florida. Man she was beautiful.

  • It's neat to have someone with a personal experience comment, did you rate it? Thanks.

  • Yea you bet, I gave it a 5. I talked to a pilot, i think it might have been the guy reading the pre-flight checklist, but im not too sure.

  • NC17333 was painted just like this one.

  • Turner Classic Movie played 1/4/08 at 11:00 am the movie "Flight Angels" (1940)

Airline stewardesses vie for the love of a dashing pilot.

Cast: Virginia Bruce, Dennis Morgan, Jane Wyman. Dir: Lewis Seiler. BW-74 mins, TV-G The plane no. NC17333 was in the movie, this video is NC17334.

  • yeah me 2

  • I love this plane! Nice video!
