An absolutly fine machine. I flew in one in Indonesia and they are workhorses that can land on "not perfect" runway surfaces. Island hopping is a piece of piss!
Had my first experience in flight in that airplane in june 2007. A 1 hour trip for 150$ in a 70 year old piece of history. That was great. Thanks to the crew for letting us sit in the cockpit for a while while up in the air. It's a little weird to see all the electronics but everything else was authentic
To each his own on the modern equipment. A few modern items add safety although take away from the nostalgic appearance. I got to fly DC-3s for a charter company and 911 seemed to signal the end of the DC-3 flying cargo. So few operators carrying cargo now. There is still simply no replacement for the DC-3. It could carry a heavy load a long way. Love to see them in the air. Don't ever want to see one scrapped- not even an old engineless hulk on an airport. Save them all!
I got to fly on this aircraft after the Stuart, FL airshow. First radial engine aircraft I have ever flown in. What a treat, and a very enjoyable ride. The wonderful sound of those 2 radials is something special. The stewardess was dressed in a period uniform. Very cool !!
I THOUGHT ABOUT BUYING ONE A COUPLE YEARS BACK. IT WAS SITTING AT PERSON AIR FIELD VANCOUVER WA. THEY HAD WORK ON IT FOR QUITE AWHILE AND THEN I SAW IT ON E-BAY FOR SALE I BID ON IT BUT THE RES. WAS SET TO HIGH FOR ME SURE WAS A GREAT PLANE THEY DID A NICE JOB ON IT.
@cklskypilot YOU ,can't even spell words right, you wingnut. Do you really expect us to believe that you would, or even could, buy ,let alone fly a DC 3. PLEASE! DO NOT PROGRESS BEYOND WHATEVER FLIGHTSIM DREAMWORLD YOU'RE IN.

It must be the angle of the camera in respect to the propeller blades, but it almost looks like the right propeller blades are pitched more than the left ones at start-up.
I didn't realize, since I'm only a flight simmer, that you can actually see the runway when the tail wheel is still down. A coouple questions if you'd be so kind.
I wonder what the GPH fuel figure you're getting. Is it around 100?
Also, what is the IAS at Vr? Is it about 85 knots?
Thanks for sharing your video!!! Such an amazing view from the cockpit, also loved how the plane was revved up while sitting at the waiting line. Why do you have to count 12 or 13 blades to start the engines?
@BlackWiiOwner2010 i believe its about priming the cylinders and oil flow, I do it on my piper before starting, (hand proping) to reduce cylinder wear by getting oil flowing before high rpm"S
@dayllife Thank you for explaining why they were counting the blades. Do you hand start your Piper all the time or do you start it in the cockpit once in a while?
@BlackWiiOwner2010 Gary is my name <<<but to clear up my explanation i don't hand start,,,,, what I do is with the mags and key off is turn the prop a few turns manually to pump oil from the sump up to the heads before the start so their is no bare metal to metal during normal start-up to reduce wear ,,engine swap is $15,000
@dayllife Greetings Gary thanks for introducing yourself. My name is William. I've always enjoyed aircraft since I first saw a plane. My dad flew planes when I was young but he had to stop b/c it just became to expensive. My mom's dad was a pilot for World War II. On the side he flew for fun, sadly he died of cancer when I was little. I wonder if the plane he flew was started by hand. I saw a pic of him flying a Piper cub, it was all yellow with black stripes on it. Thanks for the reply.
@BlackWiiOwner2010 One of the reasons they count blades on the start up is to clear the bottom cylinders of excessive oil that has seeped past the rings while the engine has been sitting for a long time. To much oil in the bottom cylinders will hydrolock the engine and do damage. This is why a radial egine smokes alot on start up do the the oil in the bottom cylinders.
@azkiid Thank you so much. The cylinders must expensive to maintain and machine. I've watched explanation video's on how a radial engine works, extremely fascinating watching the inner workings.
Great video. It's common to see DC-3's in SJU at all times. If you take a look at the cargo terminal there are 5 or 6 being serviced or being loaded with goods for the islands. The partcular sound of those props is distinguishable from all others. A truly venerable aircraft.
Great DC-3 video. I went aboard this aircraft at the Lakeland, Florida airshow in 2008. Was that Les Abend in the left seat doing the flying? Think so!
Hey DC 3 lovers ! look for "Avion Special DC3 Radio Bon Esprit" in google, you will find a 16 minutes film in english french and spanish about the last flying french DC3 !
I've been in love with the DC-3 since I first saw one when I was 10 years old...I'm 63 now and hopefully on my 65th birthday I'll get a DC-3 Add-on to my Private Pilot's License.
Not for priming but to distribute the engine oil that accumulates in the bottom cylinders and to prevent the possibility of blowing off the bottom jugs due to hydraulic lock. The procedure is to make one complete revolution of the propellor for each cylinder; minimum would be 9 revs as this is a 9 cylinder raidial engine.
Wonderful! I love these airplanes! I had the opportunity to be a passenger inth e military version a couple years ago at in airshow. (I was a volunteer at the airshow)

@BruceCarbon If you notice this aircraft doesn't have counter rotating propellers. It is a tail dragger, so there is going to be some P-factor on the take off roll. He may using a little less power on # 2 engine to reduce a pull to the left until the tail comes up and has rudder authority.
@BruceCarbon You are right, depending on the model of DC-3 the max takeoff weight is around 26000 pounds. I am sure, here in the United States you need a Transport , multi engine rating plus a ,in type DC-3 rating to collect a paycheck flying the pilot in command seat. It is expensive , here in the states. I just have a private, single engine, land rating. Wish I could afford more. Love the old airplanes from the 1930s thru 1940s.
@azkiid Dude pls trust me once: In EU it is much more expensive -.- I know about much people who did their licences in the USA and transcript it to EU version becos its cheaper (with the travels though!)
But yay a ultimate flight is only possible with those good old piston (radial) propeller birds like DC3 :D

This from wikipedia .........The Douglas DC-3 is an American fixed-wing, propeller-driven aircraft whose speed and range revolutionized air transport in the 1930s and 1940s. Because of its lasting impact on the airline industry and World War II it is generally regarded as one of the most significant transport aircraft ever made. Many DC-3s are still used to this day in all parts of the world.
Flew from Santiago to Buenos Aires in a DC-3 when Panam's were grounded. Passengers wore oxygen masks (threw up in mine). Downdrafts so bad; wings were flapping like a duck. So relieved when we got to the pampas!!!
Cobra Rick Wow, did you see my video search "1931 Pitcairn MailWing NC10753 PA-8" Thanks for the comment. History is being recorded in youtube. In the late 1920s, Pitcairn Aviation won a government contract to fly mail between New York City and Atlanta, Georgia, using Mailwing single-engine aircraft. In 1929 Clement Keys, the owner of North American Aviation, purchased Pitcairn. In 1930, Keys changed the company's name to Eastern Air Transport, soon to be known as Eastern Air Lines.
Cool video - My grandad flew for Pitcairn Air Mail which then turned into Eastern Air Transport and then Airlines, hired on Dec 1st 1930 seniority #21, his son was hired in '31 with #32. Then my uncle also flew for Eastern after Korea. Will be nice to see a DC-3 in early Eastern livery - have always thought that was the best looking paintjob for an airline before they went to the "hockeystick" logo.
Rick replied..............About my grandad/uncles, was Uncle James "Jim" Shelly Charles Jr. - he flew P-47's in the Guard, and F-84's in Korea with the 49th Fighter Bomber Group "Screamin' Demons" then got on with Eastern (forget what year), retired in '84. The other was Paul Charles, he also flew for Pitcairn Air Mail and Eastern, also held the world record for longest inverted flight for some length of time, haha.
The Douglas DC-2 was a 14 seat, twin-propeller airliner produced by the Douglas Aircraft Corporation starting in 1934. It competed with the Boeing 247. In 1935 Douglas produced a larger version called the DC-3, which became one of the most successful airplanes in history. Two weeks might be a stretch.
haha I'm amazed at how often pilots forget to unlock the tailwheel and it takes them so long to figure out why the plane won't turn! Not everything can be on a checklist. There's also a comment about burning less fuel than "that cherokee". Sure.. if "that cherokee" burns more than 80 gallons an hour. (7:30)
the whole aircraft is simply genius. they are old flying tanks. extremely, tough, and durable. if taken care of they will fly for ever. what a great aircraft.
Great video! This is why I love old aircraft you get a real sense of flying instead of haveing a computer fly for you. Wheres the fun in that! Again great video this is one of my favrote planes ever, one day ill fly in one hopefully!
As we say it in Holland ( the Netherlands ) Old is gold

Cobra Rick .........What was your uncle's name, did he fly in the service, what aircraft did he fly? He has friends out here.

The other was Paul Charles, he also flew for Pitcairn Air Mail and Eastern, also held the world record for longest inverted flight for some length of time, haha.

did you know this plane took 2 weeks to design and be built and is one of the safest planes ever going !!!!

The title is "DC3 and a touch of Humor". These are experienced airline pilots. Thanks for your comment and the viewing.

Superb! Best film of startup checklist I've seen; I'm looking for the approach & landing film with checklist and I hope it'll be as excellent!

It's neat to have someone with a personal experience comment, did you rate it? Thanks.

Yea you bet, I gave it a 5. I talked to a pilot, i think it might have been the guy reading the pre-flight checklist, but im not too sure.
