The reason the watermelon explodes is because, well, it's mainly water! 90% to be exact. The average male body holds approximately 60% water. So I'm guesstimating that the devastation to a male body from this handgun would be about 1/3 less than to a watermelon. Then again, you have more structure and muscle... But I'm just talking in terms of water. :p And after all, it is just a novelty gun. Not much practicality with this baby. Still, there is much awe in the .50 caliber magnum round.
@ludwigdrummer1 the sound you hear on this video and actually shooting it are completely different. The 500 shakes your entire body with the soundwave, including everyone within a ten foot radius. It's a crowd stopper at any shooting range. I brought mine with the 4" compensated barrel, and the range asked me to leave because the other patrons felt uncomfortable with the gun and they were complaining of their ears hurting, even with the EP. its a handful.
AWESOME GUN!!!! Thinking on getting the standard compensator 8 3/8" version. What type/grain weight ammo were you using for this video? The sound on this vid is great! I turn up the volume on my speakers just to get a "taste" of what a .50 cal magnum actually sounds like. Great vid, bud!!!!!
@ludwigdrummer1 - I hand loaded these identical to the commercially available Corbon 350 grain Jacketed hollow point, advertised 1700 feet per second, 2338 foot pounds of muzzle energy.
@42Mrchadman42 You need to be more specific. What Kodiak? Several manufacturers make a gun they call a Kodiak. Are you talking about a rifle? handgun? What cartridge? The 500 magnum is the most powerful production handgun.
@dwebb210 why does everybody say that the .44 magnum is the most powerful handgun in the world but clearly this is a 50 cal. why isnt this gun more famous???????????
@xcode394 This video was shot more than 4 years ago and there was a surplus of watermelon. These cost $2.00 each, and farmers were happy to get that for them. I'm sorry you were offended by this video, but if you don't like seeing them explode, you are searching for the wrong media. Go back to your basement, ask your mommy to bring you some hot cocoa, search for some Hello-Kitty cartoons, and leave the men alone.
@dwebb210 actualy i would ask my mom to bring me some hot cocoa but considering how she lives about 20-30 miles away from me right now, its kinda hard to do that.
@dwebb210 You should go and look around for watermelons in our country. A lot of cheap watermelons are being sold in streets and markets. They cost around 60.00 PHP (about $ 1.40) and that's the standard price during summer season.
I went shopping for a Smith 500 mag, and I asked the salesman, what the hell would you shoot with this monster, to which he replied, what WOULDNT you shoot!... touche' saleman!!
it's basically useless as a personal protection device against a home intruder and only and idiot would think about it for that purpose. better off with off with a .347 or .40 if you want home safety.
The 500 smith and Wesson is designed as a hunting weapon. Not a personal defense weapon. The idea is that the gun can and will take down any size game in the states, and act as a secondary 'finishing off' gun for very large game. Not every gun weapon of war. So, for the niche this gun was designed for, it makes perfect sense. There is a large group of handgun hunters in the world, and this is the biggest of the big gun for them.
Clearly that was the intention. But the same arguments still apply. Just because one is shooting game animals rather than other human beings, doesn't change the characteristics of the firearm itself. A 500 Magnum is still going to weigh too much and kick too hard.
Exceed a certain weight, size, and recoil, and it makes sense to jump to a different firearm configuration, such as a Scout Rifle.
@thechinadesk The design logic does make sense. There are applicable uses for this gun. Example: Campers, fishermen, wildlife rangers, etc. can carry this small weapon for protection from bears instead of carrying a large rifle with them. This gun was at one time actually marketed for just that purpose.
I suppose it boils down to where one draws the line between firearm configurations. For me, the 44 Magnums such as the Smith and Wesson Model 29 and the Ruger Super Blackhawk, are right on the cusp.
The 454 Casull, and the 460 and 500 Magnums are way over the line.

@MrEpicFail1 I'm more of a Halo fan myself. @tehdude15 - The bullet diameter is 0.500". Therefore, it is .50 caliber. It doesn't matter that there's an extra 0 on the end of it. It's still a 12.7mm cartridge like many other .50 caliber cartridges.
@tehdude15 you obviously have not a fucking clue what you're talking about. calibers are expressed as decimals. meaning that .5 .50 and .500 are exactly the same. its called the .500 because that sounds cooler. it could be .500000000 magnum and that would still be half an inch. stick with video games buddy.
@tehdude15 actually the s@w500 mag does come in 50 cal its called a 500 because because its a 500 grain cartridge they also have a 700 grain measurement for the ammo in this pistol as well.i own one.before you post something get enlightened about the product you fucking pouge

@tehdude15 dude stop playing black ops its .50 CAL a 5 inch gun bore would not be practicle and would be more dangerous for the shooter and DO YOUR FRICKEN RESEARCH
If you only need raw power at a range of a couple meters and can put at least one of the five shells in your target, the M500 is a great choice in sidearm.
Personally I'd prefer a Sig Sauer 9mm due to higher capacity and lower recoil inherent in 9mm semi-auto pistols though.
Have you tried at longer ranges to see how well the M500 stacks up in accuracy at a bit longer range than in this vid? I daresay the recoil would be a bitch due to the big bullet and powder charge.
Omg

Strictly speaking, so-called "hand cannons" make no sense whatsoever in terms of design logic.
The whole point of a handgun is light weight and portability.
Firearms come in certain configurations.
handguns -> submachine guns/PDWs -> carbines/assault rifles -> main battle rifles -> LMGs/SAWs -> HMGs -> etc.
Whenever a firearm exceeds the weight and size limits for its configuration, it ceases making design sense.
It makes more sense to move up to the next higher configuration.

Awesome!

Someday, the watermelons will rise up and you will be there to stop them. >:D

@AmazingKnifeThrower Smith and Wesson 500 magnum is the most powerful handgun in PRODUCTION! You can't compare that to a rifle

LOL! I think you'd last quite a while in a zombie apocolypse even though you only have 6 rounds to dispose of at the time.
jduran1995 1 year ago
@jduran1995 Because of the incredible power of the 500 magnum, the revolver can only hold 5 rounds.
