The Cherokee are fortunate that they were allowed to continue to exist and to pass on their traditions. Also my cousins look pure cherokee. The looks passed over me though. I am white, as was my mom and dad. I do consider myself of Cherokee blood and Ancestry. My Great Great Grandmom helped found my town. She was the first one to buy from the traders set up here.

Interesting thing I experienced. I'm sure we all know the prejudice that exists between blacks and whites. Half black and white kids have problems being accepted by EITHER race. Not so among cherokees. I had mentioned to some cherokees at one point that I am 1/32nd. I expected them to laugh and say I am a white man. I got surprised. I was instantly accepted among them (at my word) and told "one drop of cherokee blood makes you one of us".
Registry was required of all indians, but it was usually only enforceable on indians who were on a reservation. Indians scattered abroad, or married into a white or black family rarely refistered or even had a way of knowing they needed to. The majority of %cherokee people who have NO proof of it IS higher than those that can. Logically it would be. I'm 1/32nd cherokee. I can't prove it though. My ancestor that was full blooded cherokee never registered.
Something that came up often here in this discussion is people claiming to be cherokee and others saying they have no right to make the claim. In fact Cherokees interbreeding with Europeans AND Africans was VERY common. The cherokees were a docile and peaceful tribe for the most part. Some of us can PROVE cherokee ancestry through the DAWES REGISTRY. It isn't unusual as well though for many of us to have cherokee ancestors that never registered.
I see my grandmother in those faces lol. She looks more cherokee than me. I'm mostly german though. My grandma's grandma or grandpa was 100% cherokee. So my grandma would be 1/4 cherokee. That means I'm 1/16 cherokee. I live in upstate new york, but the nongerman side of my family came from outwest (and before that the cherokee homeland).

Also my cousins look pure cherokee. The looks passed over me though. I am white, as was my mom and dad. I do consider myself of Cherokee blood and Ancestry. My Great Great Grandmom helped found my town. She was the first one to buy from the traders set up here.

Interesting thing I experienced. I'm sure we all know the prejudice that exists between blacks and whites. Half black and white kids have problems being accepted by EITHER race. Not so among cherokees. I had mentioned to some cherokees at one point that I am 1/32nd. I expected them to laugh and say I am a white man. I got surprised. I was instantly accepted among them (at my word) and told "one drop of cherokee blood makes you one of us".

Registry was required of all indians, but it was usually only enforceable on indians who were on a reservation. Indians scattered abroad, or married into a white or black family rarely refistered or even had a way of knowing they needed to. The majority of %cherokee people who have NO proof of it IS higher than those that can. Logically it would be. I'm 1/32nd cherokee. I can't prove it though. My ancestor that was full blooded cherokee never registered.

Something that came up often here in this discussion is people claiming to be cherokee and others saying they have no right to make the claim. In fact Cherokees interbreeding with Europeans AND Africans was VERY common. The cherokees were a docile and peaceful tribe for the most part. Some of us can PROVE cherokee ancestry through the DAWES REGISTRY. It isn't unusual as well though for many of us to have cherokee ancestors that never registered.

I see my grandmother in those faces lol. She looks more cherokee than me. I'm mostly german though. My grandma's grandma or grandpa was 100% cherokee. So my grandma would be 1/4 cherokee. That means I'm 1/16 cherokee. I live in upstate new york, but the nongerman side of my family came from outwest (and before that the cherokee homeland).

I have some Cherokee heritage too, and whenever I read the story or see a video of it, I burst into tears, as if I was there. I seemed to know the story before it was told to me

@weskamo the indians that inhabited the americas before europeans had killed off an earlier indian race that killed an earlier indian race. there were 3 indian migrations from asia and each killed off the previous (except in rare instances found in remote areas of south america). so why was it ok for indians to kill off indians the only thing different was the europeans had guns and horses. no reason to hate europeans, they did EXACTLY the same thing that the indians were already doing
