i love how this movie condemns the violence, murder, and crime and whatnot. All of that share a simple hidden message behind it, whereas it says "ITS WRONG AND YOU KNOW IT" and thats true.

Hi, I love this movie and have often asked myself why. I'm not really sure. I think a big part of it is the sense of place. From the get go you are immersed in a very real place that, for many people, is quite different from what they know. The movie succedes in making the viewer at home here. the amazing sense in gang wars because of the placment of the camera which is on the center of fight and not on the sides. very nice shot is the 360 at the beggining of the movie of the main actor to his child hood playing soccer

chicken is like rocket (boy with camera), they both want to escape hoods and favela, makes them seeing each other like mirror, thats also why he doesnt get the chicken as like himself, lil ze is set to stop anything escaping and rocket, called so wants to move quickly away from the claustrophobic place he lives in.

I saw this for the first time two nights ago. One of the best films i've ever seen. Flawless in nearly every way. I would not bat an eye at speaking this in the same sentence as The Godfather when it comes to great gangster films. Its that good. Hope you feel the same if you've seen it. Are you kidding me? This is only one of the greatest cinemtic scenes of all times. The symbolism, the humor. It's sets the whole movie up. The first 52 seconds are arguably the best. And yes, the chicken almost got ran over after escaping the favela gang -- that was intentional.
