City of god is a good movie but sadly it reality out there there is soo many hood or slum now days that are terrible like the movies n lil Ze is one ugly motherfucker demons but scary as hell lol
i love how this movie condemns the violence, murder, and crime and whatnot. All of that share a simple hidden message behind it, whereas it says "ITS WRONG AND YOU KNOW IT" and thats true.
unfortunately, us Americans do not portray it that way. rather, we perform plastic surgery on the violence. its a damn shame the american movie industry does that.
i usually dont watch films with subtitles but i loved this film just as good as any gangster film right up there with goodfellas the godfather and scarface
Brazil is like USA, has many black people(when The portugueses Bring the africans to be Slaves) and Many people of European decent ... Has the poor and rich parts ... and has many Idiots who says brazilians speak spanish ... but actually do not understand Spanish... is a fucking other Language !
and actully i hate this movie Because i hate violence !
it's a surprise to me know then americans Liked This movie !!!
More than 60% of the population in Brazil live below the poverty line. Don't believe that shit that AllAboutBrazil is saying. He is just pulling the wool over the foreigners eyes lol. I know this because i have lived in Brazil for 7 years.
agreed with the below. to say gang life doesnt exist is ignorance. it's a brilliant film and the truth of brazil has the terror of gang life and also the beauty that you preach. if you watch this movie close enough, you'll see both.
First off, this movie was made in Brazil. Secondly, the movie isn't giving a negative depiction about Brazil, but about gang life. It just happens to take place in Brazil.
este filme é puro brilho Eu adoro ele, um dos melhores filmes que eu já vi e que mostra que a verdadeira vida como era na favela, mas apenas um microcosmo
I agree this is one of the best movies iv ever seen, it's rugged and roughly made, and sometimes poorly edited which just adds to the overall context and brilliance of the movie.
I totally agree, when I first watched the film I was captivated, the fast paced action, the sun drenched beach, the editing techniques and the extreme violence shown.. I felt that it was hard hitting but really entertaining and thought provoking. Thanks for your comment
Hi, I am a media student currently writing an essay on the representation of slum life, in Brazilian cinema. To aid my research I am trying to find out why audience's have found the film 'City of God' entertaing and what aspects in particular they found engagaing, so any comments you leave relating to this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I posted this movie up for the excellent camera and production work with the chicken. In my opinion it is quite funny when juxtaposed against the terrible living situation portrayed in the movie. I don't have anything critically to say regarding the whole movie itself. But I am sure there are lots of opinions out there.
Hi, I love this movie and have often asked myself why. I'm not really sure. I think a big part of it is the sense of place. From the get go you are immersed in a very real place that, for many people, is quite different from what they know. The movie succedes in making the viewer at home here. Not sure how they did it, but they did. Also, the story itself is very great.
@ANNIEINPRINT City of God is phenomena it is outstandingly Directed and Played there is many movies like it but no one tell the story in so amazing and engaging way that hook you up with the characters and their simple life , this why audiences found it enchanting .
@ANNIEINPRINT since my reply is over a year to you, ann,if your interest is still animated reply to me,my insights come from a upbringing in compton, cal. a white 1950-1960's view.
the amazing sense in gang wars because of the placment of the camera which is on the center of fight and not on the sides. very nice shot is the 360 at the beggining of the movie of the main actor to his child hood playing soccer
@ANNIEINPRINT as a brazilian i find the movie not entertaining but interesting and proud that the truth cabout the poverty in brazil can be depicted correctly, just like wen u laugh at something u relate too. and to those that live on the outside dont understand that this today (2011) is still very true and unfortunatelly is something we live with.

what is so good about this scene? I was not amused by it, that was my everyday life in south america. i mean sure its good detailed about poverty there.
You talk if the South part of America (that is not the name of USA), was poor with no medium class, good neighborhoods and a lot of mansions and luxury also.
i said my life in "south america". i never assumed it was all poor. i was a very poor person back then who barely had any food and now im lucky that i do in the US.
whats so good about it is the camera views, how it draws you to worry for this chicken thats trying to live, then it draws you to rockets story Amazing movie
chicken is like rocket (boy with camera), they both want to escape hoods and favela, makes them seeing each other like mirror, thats also why he doesnt get the chicken as like himself, lil ze is set to stop anything escaping and rocket, called so wants to move quickly away from the claustrophobic place he lives in.
I saw this for the first time two nights ago. One of the best films i've ever seen. Flawless in nearly every way. I would not bat an eye at speaking this in the same sentence as The Godfather when it comes to great gangster films. Its that good. Hope you feel the same if you've seen it. If you haven't see it... i obviously recommend it.

yeah you should definitely watch it..its a very good movie...excellent storyline and yet based on true story...it uncovers the life of a gang in a slump..nah..you gotta watch it with subtitles...lemme know what you of the movie after you watch it
