There were reports of camps with nearly 1 million POWs that were left exposed to the elements, left to starve, etc. Out of that million, hundreds of thousands were declared KIA or MIA, never to be found again.
And about gassing, no1 ever proved anything, but they say it so many times that it becomes true, and you get arrested if you say otherwise.

The British did more for the survivors of Bismarck than the Germans did for the men of HMS Hood, which I think was NOT A DAMN THING!! it's war and war is hell. She was a contemporary of Bismarck but no cake walk...and Bismarck was not slimmer (118' beam to NCs 108'). That made Bis a better gun platform. NC's only advantage was her 2700lb AP's and her turret faceplates.
Yes, Bismarck absorbed alot of hits but was mission killed early in the fight. She lost her fire control and her weak turret design allowed her turrets to be penetrated. At the close range the Brits were firing the trajectory was too flat to penetrate her citidal. One of Rodneys 16" put a nice hole in the armored conning tower killing Lindeman and Lutjens..
Actually PoW was better armored than Bismarck and her 14" guns were comparable to Bismarcks 15". Hood should not have been there with her weak deck armor. NC's 16" 2700lb super heavies were great deck piercers. Bismarcks 15" were lighter but higher velocity. Bismarcks weak point was her turret armor..bad design with faceted plate

@TheScrumpty The russian and soviet source don't agree and statisticly that's just not possible. Russia would have been a Ghost town if that was the case. Take into acount the years and deaths when commies came to power, the stalin years before the war and after the war when population still suffered a lot were many have died because of lack of food etc.
@darkon112 over the years "soviet" sources have been legendary in their ability to be inaccurate and unreliable, but if you do some research in the nato, and un archives russia suffered more deaths as a result of world war 2 than any other country by far and almost as many as all countries involved combined, the the country with second most deaths is china with nearly 10 million at the hands of the japanese.

And besides that, the soviets planned to attack germany just a few months after the german forces attacked the soviet union, there is evidence of that. So it was just a question of initiative there.

@NAllen828 It is a FACT that the Allies had concentration camps of their own in Canada. They shot German POWs and beat them frequently. I saw some pictures in Time Life's series on WWII. One of the worst was of two Canadians smirking with the German POW they had beaten, his face was covered in blood. The Allies were no angels and have no right to call themselves saviors either. War is war and they were sometimes hardly better than the Germans or Japanese. Just look at the bombing of Essen.

The bismark was WW1 design unprotected data and comm lines, weakest broadside of any modern BB single purpose secondary guns, terrible AAA protection unprotected data and comm lines, bismark could not stop 6 obsolete biplanes, was destroyed by HMS Rodney in 15 minutes all 4 turrets destroyed. North Carolina with 16 inch modern guns would make short work of bismark Would not even waste using Iowa (Greatest Battleships in history) on obsolete bismark

not to mention the ammo used, it was faulty, PoW was hit by 5 -15" and by 3- 8" and some of the 15" falled to exploded. on the other hand bismarck was hit by 3-14",one unimportant, and only one exploded, but this one did not crippled the ship, the one that hit the port bow, penetrated 2 oil tanks and exited on starborad without exploding, but this one did cripple the ship very seriously

In many ways Bismarck was based on WW1 designs as Germany was forbidden from building large warships after 1918, but when entering service she was the largest and most powerful battleship afloat. In terms of firepower, armour and speed only the later built Iowa and Yamato classes could compete. Washington treaty ships were simply too restricted. It took the combined might of the Royal Navy and RAF to destroy her.
inar64, The bismark had weakest broadside of anny modern battleship, the armor on her turret roof was weak and 9/16 inch guns to 8/15 inch guns. North Carolina would easily take the bismark out.
The Bismarck had a relatively slim profile, compared to the North Carolina, which means its harder to score major hits. The North Carolina didnt have too much armor, as far as I know. And Bismarck, well.. She had lots of armor, on her hull. The superstructure could use more, but I'd also place my bets on Bismarck.
The North Carolina 16 inch guns were the greatest BB guns built after the Iowa class 16/50 also North Carolina was equipted with the 5/38 duel secondary guns unlike the bismarks obsolete single purpose secondary guns and had better trained crew victory goes to North Carolina easily

The British did more for the survivors of Bismarck than the Germans did for the men of HMS Hood, which I think was NOT A DAMN THING!! it's war and war is hell. To imply the British sailor was less of a human than a German sailor is ridiculous. British sailors were a proud bunch just like the German sailors. Proud of their ships and fellow comrades.

And please run down the stars and stripes in regards to NC. A fine ship but only armored against 14". She was a contemporary of Bismarck but no cake walk...and Bismarck was not slimmer (118' beam to NCs 108'). That made Bis a better gun platform. NC's only advantage was her 2700lb AP's and her turret faceplates.

Yes, Bismarck absorbed alot of hits but was mission killed early in the fight. She lost her fire control and her weak turret design allowed her turrets to be penetrated. At the close range the Brits were firing the trajectory was too flat to penetrate her citidal. One of Rodneys 16" put a nice hole in the armored conning tower killing Lindeman and Lutjens..

Actually PoW was better armored than Bismarck and her 14" guns were comparable to Bismarcks 15". Hood should not have been there with her weak deck armor. NC's 16" 2700lb super heavies were great deck piercers. Bismarcks 15" were lighter but higher velocity. Bismarcks weak point was her turret armor..bad design with faceted plate

Unbelievable-typical US arrogance. No battleship in history absorbed as much battle damage through ship v ship action as the mighty Bismarck. She took over 700 direct hits from 15" & 16" shells-and she STILL didn't sink. Capt Lindemann ordered that the sea cocks be opened once all her guns were out of action, this coincided with HMS Dorchester firing torpedo's at her to finish the job. Bismarck was arguably the finest battleship ever built-as usual, some dumb Yank naturally assumes otherwise!

thats the pride that people need to have of their militarys. im an american, my grandfather was a sailor in the atlantic, but my respect for the German military, from the west, to the east is beyond words. when people here. Third Reich" they think of hitler. i think of things like the bismarck, prinz eugan, tank aces, and the infantry man who was just doing his job.

@darkon112 over the years "soviet" sources have been legendary in their ability to be inaccurate and unreliable, but if you do some research in the nato, and un archives russia suffered more deaths as a result of world war 2 than any other country by far and almost as many as all countries involved combined, the the country with second most deaths is china with nearly 10 million at the hands of the japanese.

@TheScrumpty Actually you should read facts. Hitler did not start WW2, Britain and France did when they declared war on Germany. Also WW2 began when the victors of WW1 acted like they did.
And besides that, the soviets planned to attack germany just a few months after the german forces attacked the soviet union, there is evidence of that. So it was just a question of initiative there.

@NAllen828 It is a FACT that the Allies had concentration camps of their own in Canada. They shot German POWs and beat them frequently. I saw some pictures in Time Life's series on WWII. One of the worst was of two Canadians smirking with the German POW they had beaten, his face was covered in blood. The Allies were no angels and have no right to call themselves saviors either. War is war and they were sometimes hardly better than the Germans or Japanese. Just look at the bombing of Essen.

Correct me if im wrong but it was the Hood that fired just before it went underwater. However you can't deny the greatness of both ships. And respect all those lost in them both. I guess it's not the same watching video's on Youtube however. Watching a ship sink, or the crew of the Dorsetshire having to leave survivors in the water would be a terrible sight that would never leave you the same again.

The bismark was WW1 design unprotected data and comm lines, weakest broadside of any modern BB single purpose secondary guns, terrible AAA protection unprotected data and comm lines, bismark could not stop 6 obsolete biplanes, was destroyed by HMS Rodney in 15 minutes all 4 turrets destroyed. North Carolina with 16 inch modern guns would make short work of bismark Would not even waste using Iowa (Greatest Battleships in history) on obsolete bismark

the RN had a very big advantage over the kriesgmarine: 8 - 15 " guns, 10 -14" guns and 16 - 8" against 8 -15" and 8 - 8", also in sheer displacement : 43,670 (Hood) +36,727 (PoW)+ 10,900 (Suffolk)+ 9,975 (Norfolk) against 41,700 (Bismarck) +14,247 (Prinz Eugen)

not to mention the ammo used, it was faulty, PoW was hit by 5 -15" and by 3- 8" and some of the 15" falled to exploded. on the other hand bismarck was hit by 3-14",one unimportant, and only one exploded, but this one did not crippled the ship, the one that hit the port bow, penetrated 2 oil tanks and exited on starborad without exploding, but this one did cripple the ship very seriously

i would be appalled if they made a movie. why!? becuase they would all be americans putting on shitty german accents!!!!!!!!! if there was to be one, i would really hope it would be a german film! anyone know 'Downfall?' The best nazi war film, and its a german film.

In many ways Bismarck was based on WW1 designs as Germany was forbidden from building large warships after 1918, but when entering service she was the largest and most powerful battleship afloat. In terms of firepower, armour and speed only the later built Iowa and Yamato classes could compete. Washington treaty ships were simply too restricted. It took the combined might of the Royal Navy and RAF to destroy her.

if there would have been a battle between these two battleships (range lets say about 17-20 KM)
id put my money on the bismarck.(not because of armour or something, but because of the ability to rapidfire and do it very accurately)

inar64, The bismark had weakest broadside of anny modern battleship, the armor on her turret roof was weak and 9/16 inch guns to 8/15 inch guns. North Carolina would easily take the bismark out.

While it is true that Bismarck had smaller guns than the NC, that in itself does not mean that "North Carolina would easily take the bismark out."
Now, IF the NC hits Bismarcks weak spots BEFORE Bismarck hits NC's weak spots, then, and only then, would NC "easily take the Bismark out."
Even if Bismarck had slightly smaller guns than NC, that does not mean that NC would not be affected by direct hits from Bismarck's main guns.

The Bismarck had a relatively slim profile, compared to the North Carolina, which means its harder to score major hits. The North Carolina didnt have too much armor, as far as I know. And Bismarck, well.. She had lots of armor, on her hull. The superstructure could use more, but I'd also place my bets on Bismarck.

The North Carolina 16 inch guns were the greatest BB guns built after the Iowa class 16/50 also North Carolina was equipted with the 5/38 duel secondary guns unlike the bismarks obsolete single purpose secondary guns and had better trained crew victory goes to North Carolina easily

the north carolina was slower than bismarck, only 26 knots, the iowas 31, hence the name escort battleships, for the task forces
better trained? bismarck's crew hit hood in her 3 salvo and by the 5 it doomed the hood

When did I say the North Carolina was better then the Iowa? I said it was better BB then the Bismark had better guns, armor and crew. Uss Washington sunk another BB in battle, bismark class never sank another BB
