I'm on 761, and lost it cos someone interrupted me. I don't think it gets particularly harder when you get scores in the hundreds.... you just need to concentrate, and use certain paths, i.e. always try get the helis in a smiley face shape along the bottom half of the screen, and it gets quite easy.
Top score on Game Center is 22000 now! :-O

The official leaderboard is led by HIM, the description says this was just to prove the score for a site and is out of date!
