I'm from San Francisco and when I wound up living n Phoenix for 14 years I always remembered this song from the 60s. I'm glad I finally (1) found this song and (2) got back here to the Bay.
Thanks, Surfrider. This was a huge fave of mine in '68. I was young enuf to call an am radio request line and expect a response. They told me they only played hits and CA Girls didn't qualify. Go figger - it was one of the great songs of the era.
Neal Peart talks about how good this band was in his book, so I thought I would check it out. Pretty good stuff for a band I have never heard before. It's great to still discover new stuff.
Loved Catacombs, dances and live bands at Mt Carmel, Fever Tree, 13th Floor Elevators (when they came in from Austin), Allen's Landing, and even Jesse H Jones High. Great time to be young in Houston.
My Cousin played bass for Fever Tree. It is a shame that they were not recognized properly for their work. America missed out on some excellent music.
@jwolfe1115 Interesting! I was e-mailing Rob a while back and he was trying to get in touch with Buddy. I'm a fan from the Lake Charles days of the late 60's and there was no other band around like these guys. I miss them!...and a few other things from those days.
My Cousin played bass for this group. It is too bad that this group was not properly recognized for their music. I have enjoyed listening to all of their music posted on Youtube.
This song charted # 1 for the week of July 20, 1968 on CKLG, the top 40 radio station at the time in Vancouver, BC. It spent five weeks in the top ten.
Hey there, My dad played a bit with Fever tree in their touring days as the drummer. Not til his 50th birthday did I find the cd over seas to order since the I couldn't find the orginal vinyl. Sorry to say though my father has passed a bit ago though but I would really inspired to hear this music. I don't know much about fever tree other then the cd I heard and my dad's stories of the tours for Jimmy Henderix, Janis Joplin, Deep purple and more. I would love to touch up more info about them
Who was your dad? This is the first time I've heard their music and it is really good. My husband also played drums with FT and has told me those stories about touring, playing at the Pokroc and Catacombs, but I was too young to actually see him play. Sadly he doesn't have any of the records or photos. My brother Mike Teague was also in a band called the Lavender Hour.
gsween1...sorry to hear about your uncle man...bet he had some stories...i saw fever tree at the bellaire gym in bellaire, texas...i also saw the 13th floor elevators(rocky erickson) and the moving sidewalks(billty gibbons and frank beard)
Sorry to hear about his passing. If you didn't live through those times then there's no way to explain how new and great the music was. Middle 60's through the late 70's were amazing times for music lovers, and there was some pretty damn good herb going around, too. See, we ain't that old!!
Mike Knust, the lead guitarist, was my uncle. He was a guitar genius but sadly passed away in 2003 in his sleep. RIP. He battled addictions that eventually caught up to him but his style of music will never be forgotten. The Fever Tree sound was the 60's as far as i am concerned. They were a part of my childhood.
ohh thats so sad. i know how addiction goes...this is some beautiful guitaring. im only 28, lol and i did not realise so many ppl knew this song! my mom played it for us as children. its always as though the world is a bit darker when a great musician passes....
Mike was in my studio back in 1980 and I asked him about the guitar sound on SFG, he told me that it was a vox tone bender that gave the guitar that beautiful sustain. Oh yea, and a LOT of volume.
I had this album...unfortunely i left it on top of the amp...a bogen with TUBES and no cover!! Needless to say, it pretty well destroyed it with neat little "domes" on the record. If i'm not mistaken there was another San Francisco song that was out about the same time that eclipsed it...San Francisco Nights...this following program is dedicated to the people and city of San Francisco, usa who may not know it, but they are beautiful, and so is their city,,,,,
They'd play this song occasionally on our rock station back in the 80's but I could never find out who did this song. It was one of the coolest sounding things I'd ever heard. Better was that when I finally learned the band's name, I found the album the next week. This song still has some of the coolest guitar I've ever heard.
Fever Tree is and has always been my favorite since '68 sitting on the grass at Allen's Landing. I listen to them regularly. Rob Landes has a jazz group that plays regularly. They just played for the reopening on the Opera House in Galveston.
these guys are really evocative of old hippy days, summer of 6 i had the album and there was this other song "the man who paints the pictures" that was very cool.
This is a cult classic from the '60s. I was there and remember these guys, and Spirit, and Cream and CCR and Hendrix and the Raiders, and the Doors and MANY more. Yep, your are all right. My band played backup for these guys several times-Houston-Catacombs and yes, "Nowabdays Clancy Can't Even Sing" yeah, lots of the best memroies. msg
My friend lent me a CD by these guys, now I can't stop listening to them, Man Who Paints Pictures and Sun Also Rises are my two favorite songs aside from this one.
Reminds me of the first time I listened through the album back in the late 60's. The unique sound and diversity just blew me away from the "traditional" rock at the time.
I remember hearing this as an 8 track my then boyfriend had. I love San Francisco and this sone is one of the things that reminds me of one of my all time fave cities.
I ve been trying to find this song for years , i had no idea it would be so easy searching on youtube. I remembered it from the 60s and always loved it
Thanks for the comment...I have had the video up for awhile now, but I remember trying to find it here away back and couldn't...took me awhile to figure out how to get it on here, but I knew it had to be exposed again. Even those close to or still in contact with some of the remaining members of the group have sent emails/comments about bringing it back out for new and veteran listeners to here "again"....thanks!
Summer of '67 - Catacombs , Love Street Light Circus at Allen's Landing, Dancing on the Larry Kane show! What great memories-what fun! I still have their albums. I liked this song but their version of "Nowadays Clancey Can't Even Sing" is better than Buffalo Springfield on a good day!!! I wish someone would post that song.
I am working on that, but have hit licensing stumbling blocks. It could be because it is not their original song. I will keep trying and let everyone know if I can get it up here.
Love Street-Houston,TX? I was there in '67, what a trip. Had my first one there and will never forget it. Fever Tree is one of the all time best from that year. Thanks guys.
I met the band in naples long beach ca. 68 or so...we were big time surf nazis..my friend Dexter pagett had them over..I shook hands!! We had so much fun back then!!! jeff sims
Really brings back memories of our 7th grade history teacher, Miss Penn getting arrested for marching on the Viet Nam Day Committee. Graduated in '70 and those were some awesome and special times to have been part of. Peace brother.
Caught this band doing a live gig in Austin, Texas last night. They played a variety of music but the Blues selections were the best. The guitarist and keyboard player are very talented with the latter having a mannerism that reminds one of the legendary "Doors" keyboardist, Ray Manzaric. They played "San Francisco Girls" near the end of their 75 minute set, but the song was not very inspiring. It should be their showcase song.
Sooo happy to find this video/song...takes me back back back. I can feel all of the hope, the energy, the PROMISE I had when we were getting stoned, and laughing, and listening, and engaging!!
I have wanted to hear this song for a dog's age. Thanks for the posting. What an incredible time this was for music. Oh man, the summer of '67. Great, great memories.
I just saw Dennis Keller's new band, Fever Tree Rising at the Saxon Pub in Austin. They were amazing. If you get a chance to see these guys, don't miss them. You will NOT be disappointed!!
You were right. Dennis was in Austin. Did you read the articles about them in the Chronicle (Rick Campbell)? Dennis went back to his old look except he isn't wearing the hat anymore. It appears he can still "eeeevvvveeennnn" sing.
If I can ever get back to Austin (I'm too damn busy because of the San Fransisco girl), I'll make sure they are performing there when I return.
my sister and i went to the austin show on may 10th. the new band is fantastic and dennis' voice is just as awesome as it's always been. make it a point to go and see these guys. you will NOT be disappointed!!
i'm going to the austin show on the 10th. i can't wait to hear dennis sing again. and to the person who said that they were rich kids: who cares? i am thankful that they were rich kids who were able to focus on the music that they gave to us. enough said.
Fever Tree Rising is playing may 10th at the Saxon Pub in Austin, and August 16 at the Continental in Houston. Dennis' voice is as good if not better than it was when he recorded this tune. Love it man! Thank you so much for posting this.
I still have my '67 Beetle with the 8-track, and I LIVED for the last 15 seconds of SF Girls on the Blaupunkt..Thanks for a Summer Flashback Colorado!!
Thanks motty1107, and thanks for the other great comments everyone....I am working on another FeverTree song, but it may be a bit before getting it on.
Far out, yall! Fever Tree Rising, Keller's new band, plays Continental Club Sat, 02/22/08 - I am gonna be there, baby!
We kids in Alvin used to have all these mentioned bands play at out American Legion Hall. We'd also run up to Houston to all the great teen dance places.
Radio played all these great songs - too bad radio directors dont realize we dont want to listen to the same 50 songs every dang day...
I was just looking through some of the comments and wish that I would have known many of you back in the mid to late 60's. I grew up in a household that won't allow this kind of music and had to discover it myself off in a corner. Reading the great comments here lets me know the "pain" I had to endure to find gems like this were not in vain. Thank you all for sharing your experiences!!!
Dennis Keller lives in Austin Tx He is back into the music scene and has been getting things together and performing for the last couple of years He has a new band Fever Tree Rising they will have their debut Gig in February 08 in Austin Tx I can't remember the club at this momemt
A totally underated group and song I never understood why they didn't make it to the top, I think they were out of Texas but could be wrong. What is nice is the song holds up well! Cheers!-greg
Wow, It's all coming back...The Catacombs, Love Street, The 13th Floor Elevators ($1 cover charge back then), dancing on The Larry Kane Show! I loved this song and I remember Mike Knust being busted by the principal everyday for his long hair (not that long). Mike lived a few blocks from me and we used to throw footballs when he wasn't blasting the neighbors with is guitar. His mom made him play in the garage and Mike played with the garage door open. I really miss him. Thanks
Holy shit! I can't believe I found this song on here! I found this song thru our rock station, who used to play cool stuff like this late at night in the early 80s. It took me years to find this album. I love this psychedelic stuff! Thanks for sharing this classic!
I was 18 when this song came out. The next year would bring me to 3 day festivals in Atlantic City and Canada. I remember may days & nights listening to this particular song totally ripped from weed, in the basement of my parents' home. Whew!!
A definite 'experience', giving a drone guitar sound that dozens stole. I heard it in San Francisco once, surrealistically. (The last doubled guitars rising always remind me of the soar of the Golden Gate's towers.) A nice mind movie.
is that a guitar makeing that erie sound near the end of the album........Ive allwasy wonderd.....does anyone know.....Loved this song when it came out in 68
yes, that's michael knust on the guitar. he was fantastic. he could have been the next hendrix. in fact, jimmi really liked and admired michael. he passed away in 2003, may he rest in peace.
I had this song once on 8-Track and I've been looking for it for over 15 years. Thanks ColoradoSurfrider for posting it. My San Francisco Girl lived in Sunnyvale. How about yours?
Must have been great to live in S.F. then('71). I was only passing thru but have a lifetime of memories such as the King Crab, baked in cheese sauce in the shell, at Aliotos on Fisherman's Wharf. 35 years and I remember it better than yesterday. Thanks again for the post. Yet, as Sinatra said: "Regrets I've had a few". And as far as my San Francisco Girl goes,"I did it my/the wrong/ way"!
I used to drive my friends crazy with this song...the music scene around Boston during the late 60's gave us some really great music ~ this was one of the finest! Thank you!
this band was part of the boston sound along with ultimate spinach, the eyes of the beacon street union, orpheus, circus maximus and the apple pie motherhood band. this song is the finest studio creation of that era, tympani flute, chimes, organ, hapsichord, e-bow?? guitar etc.
the overdubbed flutes layered over the guitars at the end are nirvana in sound; why did these guy's dissapear?
I've been waiting for a Fever Tree Video on youtube. I was there. I was friends with Mike Knust. Went to school with him and hung out at his house when they were practicing and playing as the Bostwick Vines. These guys got totally ripped off by Scott Holtzman when they made it big. Mike Knust was a great guitar player and never got his due. Maybe a little because of his own problems. He died recently and only lived a few miles from my house but didn't know it. Wish I had seem him.
hey michael! type in michael knust's name on yahoo and you will see a very long interview that he gave to a reporter. it goes into great detail about the band and himself. it's worth a read. he was great, may he rest in peace.
KRBE was on Kirby Drive. Actually KFMK was a better radio station and the prelude to KLOL.The Catacombs was OK, but I think Love Street was the best place on the planet. Making out with your lady while listening to the music can never be forgotten.
By the way, Dennis Keller, the lead singer is the only one that really became successful in music later on. He is a music educator and orchestral conductor near San Fransisco.
Long live Marion High School and Fever Tree's rendition of "Come On In"
i heard from rob landes that dennis keller lives in austin, tx. michael knust died in 2003, and john tuttle still lives in houston as does rob. rob teaches music at st. thomas university and still plays for very upscale weddings here in houston. don't know what happened to bud wolfe.
o.k., i was 9 when this song came out and you're 5 yrs older than me. were you actually going to the catacombs club and love street when you were 14? the catacombs underage limit was 15. did you fake your student i.d.? just curious.
I am 6 years older. I started going at 15. It's difficult to figure the years when we get our age. I went to Marian Hi School's Friday nite dances back in 1966. I went to the Catacombs in 1967 & 1968. I never did get in with a fake ID, but I wasn't into music until I was 15. I went to Love Street LCFGM during the summer of 1969.
I was a lead singer in a garage band that did more practicing than performing in SW Houston. We Never acheived greatness.
Another great song on the album was "The Man Who Paints the Pictures". Also, their version of "Nowadays Clancey Can't Sing" is better than the Buffalo Springfield original.
Me either - I grew up in Houston and loved, loved, loved this band (at least what I can remember of it). There is another song that I cannot remember from this album that was the greatest song.
i grew up in houston too and this entire album is good. but do you remember their first two songs on the mainstream label: hey mister and girl don't push me. dennis keller had the most awesome voice.
Thank you all for some great comments on a much underrated band. I am sorry about the quality of the pics here....looks much better on my computer...just didn't transfer well.
saw them live in Lake Charles,La. in 1967,what a trip that was--two hours of the best you ever heard. Sorry the music doesn't sound like this anymore.

I just saw Dennis Keller's new band, Fever Tree Rising at the Saxon Pub in Austin. They were amazing. If you get a chance to see these guys, don't miss them. You will NOT be disappointed!!
jade0425 3 years ago
You were right. Dennis was in Austin. Did you read the articles about them in the Chronicle (Rick Campbell)? Dennis went back to his old look except he isn't wearing the hat anymore. It appears he can still "eeeevvvveeennnn" sing.
If I can ever get back to Austin (I'm too damn busy because of the San Fransisco girl), I'll make sure they are performing there when I return.

I still have this record!!
scrapscot 4 years ago
Wow, It's all coming back...The Catacombs, Love Street, The 13th Floor Elevators ($1 cover charge back then), dancing on The Larry Kane Show! I loved this song and I remember Mike Knust being busted by the principal everyday for his long hair (not that long). Mike lived a few blocks from me and we used to throw footballs when he wasn't blasting the neighbors with is guitar. His mom made him play in the garage and Mike played with the garage door open. I really miss him. Thanks

I don't know if they captured the San Francisco sound as much as they captured the Houston sound. Man, this song is outstanding.
rudzhouston 4 years ago
I was 18 when this song came out. The next year would bring me to 3 day festivals in Atlantic City and Canada. I remember may days & nights listening to this particular song totally ripped from weed, in the basement of my parents' home. Whew!!
kaisersosay5 4 years ago
Excellent song! Didn't know anyone remembered this one. If I'm not mistaken I think this group or some of the guys came from here in Houston, Tx.
rudzhouston 4 years ago
A definite 'experience', giving a drone guitar sound that dozens stole. I heard it in San Francisco once, surrealistically. (The last doubled guitars rising always remind me of the soar of the Golden Gate's towers.) A nice mind movie.

I always loved this song and the dreamy sound of "I've Never Seen Evergreen" written by Michael Knust when he was supposedly sick and feverish.

I had this song once on 8-Track and I've been looking for it for over 15 years. Thanks ColoradoSurfrider for posting it. My San Francisco Girl lived in Sunnyvale. How about yours?
hanzee2000 4 years ago
Very nice....actually when I lived in San Francisco in the mid 70's I dated a girl from Sunnyvale...seeing your post reminded me of her.

And as far as my San Francisco Girl goes,"I did it my/the wrong/ way"!

this band was part of the boston sound along with ultimate spinach, the eyes of the beacon street union, orpheus, circus maximus and the apple pie motherhood band. this song is the finest studio creation of that era, tympani flute, chimes, organ, hapsichord, e-bow?? guitar etc.
the overdubbed flutes layered over the guitars at the end are nirvana in sound; why did these guy's dissapear?
drumier 4 years ago
I've been waiting for a Fever Tree Video on youtube. I was there. I was friends with Mike Knust. Went to school with him and hung out at his house when they were practicing and playing as the Bostwick Vines. These guys got totally ripped off by Scott Holtzman when they made it big. Mike Knust was a great guitar player and never got his due. Maybe a little because of his own problems. He died recently and only lived a few miles from my house but didn't know it. Wish I had seem him.
michaelcos 4 years ago
hey michael! type in michael knust's name on yahoo and you will see a very long interview that he gave to a reporter. it goes into great detail about the band and himself. it's worth a read. he was great, may he rest in peace.

Great job for a Great Band , Miss that era , Living Eye , Love Street , Catacombs Etc. KRBE The Voice of Spring Branch ! Acid Flashback !
sadhouse 4 years ago
KRBE was on Kirby Drive. Actually KFMK was a better radio station and the prelude to KLOL.The Catacombs was OK, but I think Love Street was the best place on the planet. Making out with your lady while listening to the music can never be forgotten.
By the way, Dennis Keller, the lead singer is the only one that really became successful in music later on. He is a music educator and orchestral conductor near San Fransisco.

i heard from rob landes that dennis keller lives in austin, tx. michael knust died in 2003, and john tuttle still lives in houston as does rob. rob teaches music at st. thomas university and still plays for very upscale weddings here in houston. don't know what happened to bud wolfe.
jade0425 4 years ago
if you know where to look, you can find info on michael knust. he died in 2003. dennis lives in austin, and john and rob live in houston.
jade0425 4 years ago
Dennis is in California.
Go to Chambersinger dot org and click on "About the Choir". A picture of Dennis is on the page.
You will see the resemblance (the thick hair) if you have old pictures of him and the one on his tribute to Michael Knust.
sb318aj 4 years ago
thank you for that info on dennis keller. i will definitely check out that site.
jade0425 4 years ago
o.k., i was 9 when this song came out and you're 5 yrs older than me. were you actually going to the catacombs club and love street when you were 14? the catacombs underage limit was 15. did you fake your student i.d.? just curious.
jade0425 4 years ago
I am 6 years older. I started going at 15. It's difficult to figure the years when we get our age. I went to Marian Hi School's Friday nite dances back in 1966. I went to the Catacombs in 1967 & 1968. I never did get in with a fake ID, but I wasn't into music until I was 15. I went to Love Street LCFGM during the summer of 1969.
I was a lead singer in a garage band that did more practicing than performing in SW Houston. We Never acheived greatness.

These guys were so ahead of their time. Thats why they didn't last. Im convinced. I played this for alll my frieds back then...and we all loved them.
