I just don't get how BEFORE this scene, Beckett bet him on something in the shooting range and suddenly he hit a couple of rounds right in the middle without effort. How can he suddenly be bad in a life or death situation or so good back then?

@skater2thebone In an episode of Firefly, Jayne (one of the characters, obviously) is drugged up and left behind by the crew, but when they finds themselves in danger (as the crew is wont to do), Jayne saves Mal, Nathan Fillion's character, by shooting his adversary. Jayne replies to Mal's "nice shot" with a garbled "I was aimin for his head". You should check out Firefly, I think it's on hulu.
