  • I totally loved this character...always wished for her return.

  • <3 Dr Dixon

    <3 Laura Roslin

    <3 Sharon Raydor

  • This charater is the only reason I watched any of grey's anatomy. She gave me hope that people who are different might be accepted into job roles such as the medical profession. She is very extreme but there are different levels and I do see elements of her charater I can relate to. One of my obsessions has always been biology - a tad more varied than hers. I watched up to her last episode on the show then no more. I can't relate to any of the charaters like I can with her so there is no point.

  • I have Asperger's myself. I don't act like THAT but there are different degrees, and it's good to see it represented on tv shows, even if that is a bit of an extreme example.

  • CHANDRA WILSON CAN EITHER CARRY OR SUPPORT A SCENE BY HER MERE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS. GREAT SCENE.

  • That's bad! She's not on the show anymore! I really liked her! She is really an endearing caracter! She should have stayed on the show!!! :(

  • I enjoyed Doctor Dixon, and hope she comes back soon :) She's a voice for people like me who have Asperger's Syndrome, or any degree of it. I saw a little bit of myself in her.

  • she is in both my favorite shows! The closer and Grey's anatomy!

  • @kathen111 the actress or the character

  • @mwtmtt the actress

  • @kathen111 thought so

  • I have Asperger's, this character is exaggerated; however, let's remember that Asperger's, like any autistic spectrum disorder, has degrees. This is an extreme case and one would think by her age and what she's been through she would have learned to fake her way through things like many do. I don't think it's a bad portrayal, I just hope people don't think this is what people with AS are like.

  • I did not like Dixon at all, she drove me crazy. But it's true what she said here.

  • I have aspergers. But I'm still young and don't know much about it, so I can't really say anything.

  • Rain Man wasn't a savant he was autistic.

  • @AmyLeefan1024

I thought he was an autistic savant *shrugdss*.

  • I loved the character of Dr. Dixon! I wish she had become a regular on the show.

  • I have AS but she is extreme.

  • Were you the one who said 'Dr. Dixon has Rainman syndrome? ' Then yes I did call you an idiot.

Because you were misinforming people, since rainman did not have AS, he was a Savant.

Although I think I just got what you meant. You were being sarcastic weren't you? Meaning Dixon was poorly portrayed? If so, I'm sorry I called you an idiot. I never get written sarcasm. I though you had meant it.

  • I agree with what someone said there about AUTISM being a very large spectrum. it is. But Asperger's is defined IN that spectrum, therefore it's not a spectrum itself.

This is an exaggerated interpretation of AS. At her age she would have learned to act "less" in front of others.

I'm not speaking against the actress either. I think she acted great on what was given to her.

I have AS and I know what I'm talking about.

  • and I'm not talking about this scene!

I'm talking about the whole character in the show.

This scene is more than fine. ;D

I'm just replying to all the people who've made comments on the character.

  • She is more like caricature of severe High Functioning Autism, I founded and run a social group for people with AS and autism, so I know what I'm talking about. I have AS myself. P.S. did you call me an idiot?

  • first time that bailey cant say anything

  • Dr. Dixon has Rainman syndrome, an unusual form of autism only seen in Films and TV.

  • idiot.

  • shes just way too neurotic

  • I have Asperger's syndrom as well, but I find Dixon a bit extrem. Or I'm just a much milder case than her, I don't know. Anyway, I like her character, but it's for sure that not all Aspergers are like her, I'm living proof. Some, though, may be.

  • I love Mary McDonnell, and I thought she did great in these episodes that she was on Grey's. Exaggerated or not on AS she did good.

  • I think it's a great scene, although I think she overdoes it a bit.

  • What I love about this scene is how initially they all just thought she was a total nutter but when she asked if she knew what Asperger's was, Dr Bailey just completely went BAM!! and realised. I just love how she realised it and was like oh CCC-rap and how Dr Dix was upset in her own way about it.

  • This is a CHARACTER. Her portrayel may not be the same degree of Asperger's as yours but it is nonetheless a portrayal of a character with Asperger's. It is brilliant. I love the character and want to see more of her.

  • I disagree with those saying that the portrayal of Aspergers is wrong, otherwise I wouldn't have known after 20 seconds of watching the programme that she has it.

It's not really exaggerated, there are others out there who it affects like this, even if others can control it.

I'm lucky to only have a mild form of HFA but I still find it extremely difficult to maintain eye-contact at all, so suggesting she should be able to control it, in a new situation especiallt is offensive to me.

  • As an individual with AS, this portrayal is sickeningly offensive and demeaning to all with AS.

  • How? Why?

(Not trying to be a jerk, I'm just curious).

  • Cos it's a cartoonified TV portrayal of someone with AS/ HFA. This character is supposed to be a high flying surgeon, so presumably v. intelligent and adaptable. Her traits are grossly overexagerated. Eg.the eye contact; someone like her should have some control over when to look at people, also theres a later episode where she basically forces the family of a comatosed girl to pull the plug so they can have her organs. Aspies have a *diffilcuty* with empathy that doesn't take away their soul

  • Its a real shame as GA, as a mainstream popular show could have used the oppotunity to show that Aspies can be normal, even successful memberrs of society as long as others are happy to understand and accept their behaviour. I guess the writers just did't have the time to do the thourough research.

  • Actually, where you're wrong is that individuals with AS all behave in a number of different ways. To assume that all people with AS act exactly the same is just ludicrous. Grey's did what it could in trying to put the syndrome out there to the forefront to be recognized. Maybe it was a little bit exaggerated, but what do you expect? Izzie is talking to a dead guy, Meredith drowned, and two people had a pole stuck through their bodies after a train wreck.

  • that behavior might not have anything to do with AS just something else have you ever thought of that???

  • I'm sorry but I would have to disagree with you entirely... I'm someone with AS as well... this is accurate... for someone with an extreme case... there i very large spectrum... and this is a very accurate portrayal of someone with this disability

  • I also have Asperger's and I agree that this is an exaggerated portrayal of our disorder. Even in an extreme case, Dr. Dixon would have learned to become better adjusted to make the successful career that she has.

  • I'm sorry but I must disagree once again... this in my opinion is an occurate portrayl... there are famous qualified doctors that I KNOW OF who don't have great social skills like this... if your interested I can give you a list

  • not necessarily...Asperger's Syndrome has only been "discovered" for less than 15 years. Therefore the likelihood that she got treatment as a child is small. It is harder to treat adults diagnosed with AS then with kids. The character was probably diagnosed as an adult.

  • Oh, and I love this scene, too. It is heart-breaking.

  • Well, she is Doctor, all right, she learned the definition as you can see. But as a surgeon she hasn't met anybody with this condition. And prejudices are tough. If somebody thinks of the other that she is a freak, a nut-job, or just someone "off", that puts that person in a box and nobody suspect thare is a medical condition behind it. I suspect the same happened to the chief, her former colleagues told him she was "off", so for him she was "off".

  • I... just wondered why no one asked the Chief what was going on. Wouldn't he know? And they are Doctors. You'd think they'd have seen it before or at least realized that it was there was something different... not just a person being weird... That is what got me. I almost felt like I was watching school children who couldn't understand that someone was different from them. I honestly don't think most of the Grey's characters are that immature.

  • beautifully done.

  • For some reason I can't stop watching this scene. I don't even watch Grey's but thought I'd check it out because MM was on it. She's brilliant.

  • Same with me! I think it's the sad back pack.

  • i also cried!! the look on mary's face when she delivered that last line broke my heart. :(

  • I loved this scene TOO! so touching... made me want to cry. Thanks for posting

  • i really loved this scene.
