I'm a Hawks supporter and I thought Ablett had a brilliant game - he played like a man possessed! Far and above the best player in the Cats side on the day. I thought at the time it was pretty touch-and-go between Hodge and Ablett for the NS as far as individual performance went - but Hodge definitely had more impact on the outcome of the game due to his rebounding of the Cats I50s.

I had a few beers and some time on my hands so I spent a few minutes "analyzing" these highlights and wrote my thoughts.
First of all, Ablett is a fantastic player. Secondly, Geelong don't kick straight at the MCG. The last three encounters against the Hawks Geelong have kicked badly in front of goal, however they've gotten over the line twice out of those three games. Just unfortunate that one of those games was the GF. Not to take away from the Hawks playing good football though. GO CATS!

I lived up in Queensland up until 2006 so I was lucky to see the Lions all the time on tv and yes i agree they are just ahead of the Cats right now but it is Geelong's amazing record (65 wins ftom the last 75)that is putting them up in the bracket of great team..but even I have to admit the Hawthorn side from the eighties is the best from the modern era...

I'm a Hawks supporter and I thought Ablett had a brilliant game - he played like a man possessed! Far and above the best player in the Cats side on the day. I thought at the time it was pretty touch-and-go between Hodge and Ablett for the NS as far as individual performance went - but Hodge definitely had more impact on the outcome of the game due to his rebounding of the Cats I50s.

Brilliant? Not really. He may have had plenty of touches but they weren't effective, evidenced by his team losing. I acknowledge the Cat's rubbish goal kicking, but Hodge was far more important to Hawthorn's performance and win.

I think Gaz is a great player, but these highlights are pretty bad... Just a quick rundown of how I see it.
Scene1: Ablett fumbling a handball.
Scene2: Ablett beating Ellis, a lightframed <40 game player.
Scene3: Ablett fumbles, then pushes Bateman who doesn't want to tackle someone without the ball.
Scene4: Ablett fumbles, drops knees and dives forward like the Cats do in order to get a soft 50, nearly misses.
Scene5: Ablett roves, like all rovers should. Hardly special.

First of all, Ablett is a fantastic player. Secondly, Geelong don't kick straight at the MCG. The last three encounters against the Hawks Geelong have kicked badly in front of goal, however they've gotten over the line twice out of those three games. Just unfortunate that one of those games was the GF. Not to take away from the Hawks playing good football though. GO CATS!

I'm a Hawks fan, but have to admit, this was a terrific performance. As for the Norm Smith Medal, it could have legitimately gone either way. See Flanagan's comments in The Age today (3 April) re how Hodge has redefined the quarterbacking role. Regardless, nice vid!

Our backline is getting on. Harley, Milburne and Scarlett. We will never see another player like Scarlett at Geel ever again. He is the best attacking full back since Bruce Doull. And having said all this about Geel players, Haw have even more 'average' players than us. Which makes the GF loss even harder to take.
