A hyena's laugh is a sound of frustration, it's usually used in fights over food or conflict. In this case it's probably that they wanted to attack the lion, but got intimidated. They are pretty young afterall.
And that lioness wouldn't dare attack one of the hyenas. If a fight was started, they would likely swarm and attack the lioness for attacking a hyena. This is where intimidation solves conflicts before there is a conflict.

What's with all the hyena hate/stupidity in the comments?
A hyena's laugh is a sound of frustration, it's usually used in fights over food or conflict. In this case it's probably that they wanted to attack the lion, but got intimidated. They are pretty young afterall.
And that lioness wouldn't dare attack one of the hyenas. If a fight was started, they would likely swarm and attack the lioness for attacking a hyena. This is where intimidation solves conflicts before there is a conflict.

Anybody hear about the hyena/lion war that happend awhile back?Something like 200 hyenas attacked around 100 lions.The hyenas won.They killed most of the males in the pride and the rest scattered.True story.Look it up.

@MrJabloney In early April, 1999 in Ethiopia, was a total "warfare" between a 80 hyenas pack and a 20 lions pride, wich 6 lions and 35 hyenas were killed over a two week period.

@MrJabloney I couldnt find it. Could you pls provide an exact video name like "so and so". There is no way such number of hyenas could overcome such number of lions. Lionesses may bee. But if pride has at least 4-5 male lions, there is no chance for such thing happening.

Humans are socialized to think the female is the weaker sex, but that rule doesn't really apply in nature. You have no idea why this lion doesn't attack them, and neither do I, but I highly doubt it's because she doesn't "have the guts." They do seem fearful of her, don't they? Your opinion doesn't come from a study of science, but rather from your socialization as a sexist human being.

Second, my argumentation comes from a study backed by numerous examples at youtube. (see male lions vs hyenas) Third, They do not seem fearful of her but they are making fun of her. Fourth, you are completely wrong from the point of view that female and male species can't be the same anyways. Get a life!

Lions and lionesses are very different as hunting/ fighting is concerned; lionesses can't inflict the same amount of damage as lions. Why? 1) When there is a ratio of 4 to 1, eg 4 hyenas and 1 lioness lioness will flee leaving food for hyenas. With similar ratio hyenas would not even dream about approaching single male lion not to speak of attacking him...cont
