To markus180963: "So and so surpasses, or blows so and so out of the water, blah, blah , blah". Musicians are artists, not gladiators. This gentleman is a GREAT guitarist, no argument there. However, you should be informed of the following: JOE PASS IS A LEGEND who brought the guitar to an epic level in jazz history. In PAT MARTINO'S own words: "In my view, Joe was the greatest ever". So it would be not only fair but also educated just to give to each its own, wouldn't you agree?...
Johnny Smith was a great jazz guitarist at his peak, and he played during the real jazz era.He use to play at birdland when Charlie Parker played there. I think Johnny Smith was Pat Martino's idol. Joe Pass was very good too, but Johnny Smith was incredible. Johnny Smith played some smoking solos, and played full chords at high tempos. A lot of Aspiring jazz guitarist listen to Johnny Smith.
iamJROD: I just found your message in my mailbox and I frankly fail to understand what is exactly the point you are trying to make in it when the actual subject being addressed here is in fact Mr. Louis Stewart, not Johnny Smith. Could it be possible that you are at the wrong page?...
Agreed, it's like those elitist hipster twats who just discovered jazz for the first time claiming Django was the greatest ever.
Django was the man no doubt, and he did what he could with two fingers, but I'd like to see him pull this off (not surprised if he could) I agree, I'm tired of people pinning artists against each other like that. I would hate to listen to music just on mere technical ability; would be terrible! Everyone's got their own soul, that's the beauty of music
@OPIHIMAN678 You need to listen to some more obscure Django with him playing the electric guitar later in his life, he really does play this stuff with two fingers.
Louis surpasses Joe Pass. At his peak, no jazz guitarist could really touch him for fluency, speed, improvisational brilliance, chordal knowledge, smoothness. Just awesome! Thank you for posting this.... M
Louis was incredible at his peak, but I don't think he surpassed Joe Pass, well not for me a least. I just say that because I liked Joe's bebop frases a little better. But Louis could do every thing else like him deffinately.
i would say the opposite- Stewart's lines are a little more precise and maybe a little hipper sometimes, but Joe's chords are untouchable. But yea, not worth comparing- Pass is a non-sequitur comparison anyway
love louis'fluid playing, will go to dublin to see him and tell the missus its pure coincidence that we stumbled into a jazz bar.

Stop comparisons with Smith or Pass - very different players - Louis is a fellow of Martino's - there lines come from a similar place. Figure it out
