There will NEVER be another one like her ! I first sailed on S/S France in 1962 from LeHavre to N.Y. Magnificent !! Then later on the S/SNorway from Miami. Last time I saw her was as about 20 people waved goodbye from "Crawdaddy's". It was Office personel from NCL, crew and me from the Consulate. The Captain came on the bridgewing and waved and "honked his horn" - we all waved back as the tears was on every face. Then - that horrible death - WHY ? She can never be replaced.!!
Lovely video, beautiful ship. There will never be another one like her. I sailed her 4 times in the 1990's and haven't cruised since. Nothing I see measures up.
S.S.United States is saved... But My Heart Aches...Knowing S.S.Norway could so eaily have been saved too, if Star Cruises only would have accepted the bids from Norwegian interests in 2oo5...just plane simple stubbornness. Tragic. Sailing will never e the same again. Nice tribute this. Thanks
I was so lucky to have my first cruise be on the SS Norway. I've been on 7 since and none compare to the incredible, majestic feeling. When you were on the Norway, you knew you were travelling on something truly special. What a shame.
I worked on her in the salon in the 80's. I love this ship and it kills me to see her gone. She was a beauty and holds many many of my best memories. We all had so many good times as crew. It was wonderful. R.I.P
A beautiful tribute to a very beautiful ship! (The Enya music is perfect too) I sailed on her four times and to me there will never be another like her! I will always love you SS Norway! Rest in Peace. You are among the ship Angels now
let me remind you all that without NCL the Norway would have never existed as we know her today. Yes her death was horrid, but they gave her life after CGT collapced.
Never sail on their ships again. Colin Veitch wanted the Norway destroyed, despite the fact that 50 million$ was offered by project Dubai to save her.
They had secret illegal dealings with Alang, and exported the ship illegally from Bremerhaven for breaking in Asia.
All this has been documented by leading maritime historian Reuben Goosens. When he published this information, his websites were subjected to MASSIVE virus attack.
i sail on my honeymoon on the beautiful Norway it was march 9th 2003, i have great memories and pictures of her. sad to see her not sailing but what a great run she had. you did a great job...makes me smile and remember her fondly!!
WOW! Thanks for the memories! Was on her 1st cruise as the Norway - and enjoyed her several more times... They don't make 'em like this anymore.....too bad.
I went on her in 1995. She was beautiful. It was ashamed to see her on beach. I never go on NCL's ship again. Now she is not pretty anymore. I don't care NCL's new ugly ships.
Also... NCL owns the S.S. Independence and that ship, which is still docked in San Francisco, has been sold to the scrap yard and soon leaves to join the Norway in Alang. I will never set foot on an NCL ship!
The NTSB says in a report that a boiler explosion on the cruise ship SS Norway killed eight crew members of Norwegian Cruise Line. Part of the boiler had "extensive fatigue cracking" and deteriorated materials that weakened the metal and caused it to rupture under the intense steam pressure. The report adds that evidence shows engineers knew about the cracking but "did not take appropriate action to fix the problem."
There was a buyer with money and then some. The problem was, Colin Veitch at NCL was personally obsessed with "killing" this ship because that boiler explosion cost his company a ton of money due to lawsuits, refunds, etc. He wanted it destroyed, not preserved. NCL will be scrapping the SS UNITED STATES later this year as they can't afford to convert it. It wiull be done in secret, just like the Norway.
Is that true?? I was wondering about BIG U, Big U has been out of servicefor 40yrs, unprofitable, and a waste for a company like NCL. If the norway now lies in Alang, What will come of BIG U, when NCL takes a working profitable NOrway out of service what sort of plan do they have for a 500million renovation Big U needs for at best... an unknown career. I live in NYC put Big U on the hudson west side. Like the queen mary in cali'
We took her second big trip back to LeHarve in 1998 we started at Southampton on September 3rd and sailed 14 nights from the D-Day beaches, to Bordeaux, Ireland, Channel Islands. What a ship! My wife & I always wanted to sail her again. Looks like that won't ever happen now... What a sad loss, why not make it a maritime museum? She was one of the best built transatlantic ships of her time
I enjoyed seeing the ship once again although the longer she sailed, the more obvious her neglect became.I must thank Kloster Cruises Ltd. for bringing to market a fine product, with a fine ship with high standards. It's sad Star Cruises couldn't maintain the jewel they had. We lost a treasure and they don't seem to care.
March 12, 2007: The Indian Supreme Court has given the Gujarat Maritime and the Pollution Board three months to advise if certain stipulations can be met for dismantling NORWAY. This is the latest in delays for a decision on the ship, which was beached on August 15, 2006. Although the court has determined that BLUE LADY cannot now be removed, the newest concern seems to be over whether 80 percent of the ten metric tons of asbestos on board can be reused or contained.
thanks for sharing - I was the personnel manager on her the morning of the explosion, I can still remember it like yesterday. But seeing these photo's has made me remember all the great times I had on her.
I worked onboard as an entertainer for several seasons. She will always be my favorite "ride" anywhere. I miss her. Thank you for sharing your love of her with me. (hug to you from crew)
I've spent exactly 9 weeks of my life on the Norway aws a passenger. Once trip was a 4 week journey that included an Atlantic crossing in the summer of '84. I have so many memories of this ship from my childhood I feel like the ship is a friend from years ago. I've been very saddened by the reports She is to be no more.
Three generations of my family sailed on the Norway since the 1960's. It was a great privlage to be able to be able to sail aboard such a great ocean liner. My last trip on the Norway was in 2002.
I really don't want them to do the same thing with the United States as with the Norway. Both are such nice ships. NCL are such fools to send such a beautiful ship to the breakers...
What a great tribute. I remember seeing her at St. Thomas (anchored)in 1989, and thinking 'wow what a ship... wish I was on that', even though the cruise I was on was awesome anyway. I was planning to travel on her but never got around to it. Dosen't look like that's gonna happen now....
Wish the pictures of S/S Norway had ALL been before the 2 decks were added - she lost some of her gracious lines. But - money talks loudests!

I like the video and sentiment. I had the privilege of sailing on her twice. Once in 1990 and again over New Year's Eve 1996. Beautiful ship.
Next time go easy on the slide transistions in the video. It got kind of distracting. ;-)
