The reason why there are so many UK artists that have become famous in the US despite having a much smaller population may be because of the less rigid gender and sexuality in the UK compared to the US. In the US you can be gay or straight. But in the UK there is more ambivalence, and creative space, uncertainty. Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Elton John.
