I thought of a bit of a spring loaded rail gun. what if you had a spring with a north magnet cube on it and on two horizontal posts were magnets that faced outwered like panels and when you shot the spring the magnet would gain force by the south end of the magnet panels its passing.

donst really make guns obsolete. they take alot of power not to mention the wear on the rails is insane. the first couplw only did one shot before needing to b replaced. theyve advanced by leaps andd bounds but right now and in the near future the most we can expect is limited use on navy ships. towards 2016ish there aiming for naval use but who knows what break throughs there could be.

So, a projectile propelled by a railgun is faster than a projectile propelled by gunpowder; am I right or not? If a railgun propelled projectile can hit a target harder, faster, and farther; then that makes gunpowder obsolete, just like tension strength.

scr for a railgun must be able to handly mans thousands Amps and are very expensive. i`ve 3 scr with 1,5kA peak. but i think that the peakcurrent is above 4,5kA!

I have an scr that is rated for 300amps continuous at 1000v with a 9000amp surge for 8 milli seconds. I got it for $50 on ebay! I am currently using it on my coilgun.

These scr's are capable of almost 1kj a piece but 3 of them together would be able to discharge these capacitors. But then again you only need these for aluminum foil. If you use an air injector there is no need for a switch because the projectile becomes the switch.

yes the capacitance is not very high, but we put in the projectile in the front part between the rails, so that the capacitor gets excatctly empty...

we used longer rails, because we will upgrade to more than 5kJ in the next time...so we ned longer rails, and can use the old ones ;)

Nice, the rails are a bit long for the amount of capacitance you used. However if that was the projectile stuck in between the rails you perhaps used too much voltage.
