If you like Pagan Goth Rock music or if you just want to heard the lyrics and how the song goes please do. its Goth Rock so theres no screaming if anyone thinks thats whay Goth music is!
The sad thing is that Christianity is based on ,and in alot of its aspect plagarised from, paganism. And the the 2 billion christians cannot see this. Still though people are slowly waking up.
@marchetti88 But don't most religions grow out of previous ones........ even Pagan religions. As a Pagan it really doesn't bother me in the slightest that Christians borrow elements from Paganism. Modern Pagans have borrowed even more from the early Pagans than Christians have. Modern Paganism doesn't have an unbroken link with early Pagans, whatever people like to think. Wicca is not an ancient religion, but a modern mystery relgion...... nothing wrong with that though.
@pokoid I agree, but i mean the central aspects such as the 12 disciples, the whole natavity story, the resurection. Christianity is basicially a parody on the worship of the sun with a man talking the place of the sun and being worshiped. But i agree with you that religions borrow from previous ones.
Just point out that Christianity was viciously persecuted by Pagans for three and a half centuries........ in a most cruel and historically demonstrable way! People....... whether Christian or Pagan can be dreadful to each other at times. Not Christian by the way............ just after a bit of historical balance.
@pokoid I agree. Christian, Athiest, Pagan, or any other faih/non-faith path, we've all felt the pain of persecution in some way. There are always assholes in any group and sometimes those assholes get into power and spread panic about the others. We all need to just live and let live. I'm tired of getting crap for my Pagan path and seeing my Christian friends get crap for theirs. History is one long "Burning times" with different groups at the stake.
@Forestimp45 Very true. Why can't people just get on with their own spiritual paths without concerning themselves with what others believe. I also agree that one of the strengths of Paganism should be its recognition of balance............ light and dark, love and hate.............. not just love and light! Nature is beautiful, but has its moods and can kill you or let you thrive! All the best.
60 000........... maybe, but over a long period of time (a couple of centuries). The question is were these folk members of some old pre-christian religion or were they heretics within Christianity? And not having the research doesn't excuse plucking a figure like 9 million out of the blue. Didn't people tend to convert to Christianity and the indigenous religions fade rather than be wiped out. You can be proud to be Pagan without needing a bit of persecution to give kudos!
The number was actually about 60,000 killed for witchcraft, which is a lot compared to the population. About 30% were men.
The song was written about 30 years ago, when 9 million was the only number available. It had not been studied thoroughly at that point.
This song captures the reality that Christians wiped out the indigenous religions of Europe. It happened centuries before, but it's part of our heritage. The Burning Times were a way to further elite power, using religion as justification
And if the Earth is so sacred why the need to make the images so idealised. Where are the lions ripping out the throats of gazelles? That said I like Christy's voice......... just a shame the song perpetuates a historical falsehood.
@pokoid Lol! That's a very good point about the lions. Personally I believe even that act of death is beautiful, and we need more attention put on things like that, but so many focus on the light and creation that they ignore its ballance. They forget that death needs to happen for life to go on. I've certainly nothing against creation, light or youth, but there are other aspects of nature that don't deserve to be swept under the rug.
I agree with Penardun............. a load of nonsense. Most killed were for heresy. They would have seen themselves as Christian, not Pagan (and certainly not Wiccan). And the figure of nine million is absolutely outlandish (about twice the entire population of Elizabethan England). I'm afraid the art (although nicely executed) is a bit sickly and gives the impression that being Wiccan means being nubile young women...... where are the crones? Where are the men?
Indeed. Terrible things were done, I don't deny that people died horribly being called "witches" (men as well as women, which the song weirdly seems to gloss over". But it's an insult to the victim's memory to perpetuate the myth that they were something which they were not, especially when they would have thought of witchcraft as a terrible immoral thing as much as their executioners did.
Oh good grief. What a load of utter nonsense. Witch hunts were targeted at people against whom others held grudges for whatever reason or for economic reasons ("I may get that old widow's land when she dies"). Plus, suspected witches were hung, heretics were burned. Different crimes. I'd be prepared to put a substantial amount of money on the amount of people being put to death for witchcraft who actually *practiced* withcraft and did not consider themselves good Christians at zero.
It's actually really sad, on how we treat earth. I love her. I have teacher that hates it when i speak about things, about Mother Earth. I'm Wicca, and it makes me sad, Some people may never now about how we do things. We don't kill or hurt people. We are the same, in a lot of ways.
I heard this beautiful song about 15 years ago on a halloween program on NPR. There was a lady telling "ghost" tales. I've been searching for the name of the stories everysince. My spelling is off, I'm sure.. but here goes: brownie of black haggs, sprouts were the lords of whillup, a servant named mettedeck who was really and truly a brownie and tormented the lady, by her own hand she had made herself childless, to see him grin and grin and grin, ... any help?
I loved the images, but for some reason the audio didn't come up. I agree that it's not over yet because all this remains within our psyches...thus domestic violence, rape and kidnapping of women and children, et al. I also want to ad I'm still adjusting to stunning women as witches...I am a crone, and more of the images might have been of us elders, who have carried the flame for centuries.
It's a great song, though a bit historically inaccurate, it makes out Wicca being an ancient religion, which it is not....but then even "the dead man on a cross" has pagan roots. cheers. I love Christy Moore.
@TheGuerrillaPoet agreed but still well done, as a pagan but not of the wiccan path I follow druidism i wish people did more indepth study, but a bubble gum pagan is better than not a pagan
@TheGuerrillaPoet agreed but still well done, as a pagan but not of the wiccan path I follow druidism i wish people did more indepth study, but a bubble gum pagan is better than not a pagan
@TheGuerrillaPoet The name Wicca was used because the ancient peoples that were the wise ones in their villages were known as Witta, Witte, Wicce or Wiccae (which also contributes to the modern day term "witch"). They practiced Wittecraft (Witch craft) etc. Wicca today is just the reopening of the ancient European Shamanism and Druidism. Many (myself included) consider it to be ancient and new at the same time :) All this information can be found in Raymond Buckland's "Big Blue" book )0( all
Wow, these pictures are absolutely breathtaking! I didn't even hear the words to the song because I was so caught up on the images. I'm about to watch it again for the song itself. <3
The poster is right this video doesn't knock Christianity but it does have a lot of truth and history to it (I can vouch for this...History teacher..)
Of all the covers of this song, I have to say that Christy's is my favorite after the original version by Charlie Murphy & Jamie Seiber (even before Rumors of the Big Wave did it.)

I love this song! it is one song that touches the heart. i have many friends that are catholic or christian and the don't mind that i am wiccan. however, there are times when misconceptions are brought to my attention that i have to explain. sometimes i still get the "she murders babies for satan" crap and although it bugs me i let it go. if those that don't understand don't ask for an explaination how can we explain it to them at all? blessed be to the God and Goddess
I'm Pagan too... I found out most Christians don't know about the burning times, I told one of em and they called me liar saying Christianity would never do something that evil. Yeah. Enough said. <3 Blessed Be.
A beautiful video to a beautiful song, The Unholy Roman Empire will have to account theft of widows property following their murder. We still have their Roman Catholic Canon Law in our land in the form of the Roman Civili so called law. Their sins have massed together clear up to heaven, and in her where found the blood marks of the souls of the innocent ones. Mene mene tekel upharsin. sorry for the rant.
Don't get me wrong, I love this song no matter who sings it. But, I think because of Christy Moore's quiet voice, this version lacks the power that Charlie Murphy's does. But it's still a wonderful song no matter who does it.
Boudicca was actually a very romanised woman, her family had been involved with the Roman invaders for many years. While I agree she was a great leader, her actions were politically motivated, but also based on very personal motives she was flogged by the Romans and her daughters were raped. She worshiped Andraste british goddess of victory.
My only criticism of the song is that the Romans and Greeks did not treat women as Equals and in Egypt a woman had to fight tooth and nail to hold power because it often defaulted to men. But early on, "In the center often stood a woman" in Celtia that was true.
Women and Men in Celtia could both be priests or priestesses, both could be healers and druids, both could be warriors, and both could be great leaders like Boudicca.
This is a lovley song and beautiful video . A favorite. Life is to short and precious. Let all believe as they will and the good will shine on it's own. Evil will tarnish it's self. Blessed Be
im know as the lost soul one of the many who is pegan.....most people fear what they dont understand... we are more intune with mother earth then anything...most take it to far and say we worship satan and its so far from it!!!!
i think i am wane of the few who belive in gods. bet that's because mij religion is wicca, so i am a witch and many of my brothers heve fallen. but ther are not the only wane. the church hase done many bad thing. all over the world christens were trying to expand ther fait. and the only way they could was with war and crusade's. + you cant bleme the islam for any jihat. the church started. i say no more it must end
absolutly incredible you should post where u got ur pics from so i can make some shirts lol or something else i would have to talk to my print manager
neckozeusa's comment explain your reasons why you disagree. I was raised Catholic but am now atheist So many wars, so much pain and suffering is based on religion and the struggle to prove whose is 'right'. The Christian church has been responsible for the deaths of many hundreds of thousands of people at least. And all for not complying with man-made rules and orders.
Truth be murdering people for nothing while they themselves were the most foul and corrupt.
I am atheist to.This is nonsense how religions manipulate human mind.I heard on radio"...Islamic insurgence in Afghanistan.." .OK. This is Islamic country and what kind of people will be involved in fight against others who they recognized as aggressor.Who is in Afghanistan government?People of same religion. Why news do not call NATO forces-christian warriors? They are all from christian countries.Everything is just manipulation.I am always on side of oppressed.
Even now in regions of Africa children and women (and rarely, men) are accused of witchcraft, tortured and burned alive. All for the delusions of the Christian converters so many years ago. If those questioning my post read into the history of Popes you will find they were utterly obsessed with sex, power and were hugely corrupt. Id like to know is the current Popes opinion on the matter but hes too busy shrieking against the condom manufacturers to bother with such trivial issues.
I was listening story on radio about killing albinos in some African countries and selling their body parts for witchcraft.I guess people are strange beings.
Totally, it's like that movie "Wanted:" kill one, save a thousand. Well, of course the assassins were supposed to be killed; kill them, save a thousand future targets! Any Christian who goes around condemning people is a walking oxymoron anyway; isn't it supposed to be God's job, deciding who does or does not deserve to be with Him in heaven?
Absolutely magnificent. This song always makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, wonder why?? One of the best music vids of all time. Thanks for taking the time and effort.
Can anyone tell me where i can this version of the song?
Amazing video, I heard this song many years ago where we all lived in a valley of trees, trying to protect precious woodland being cut down to build a road. So when i hear this song it makes me weep, but also gives me strength if that makes sense.
never mind the fact of religion, what this high lights, is yet another wrong doing of man kind. all of the religions of our world preach " love thy neighbor" and yet all of them have killed! respect of and for is what needs to be looked at, thats respect for the earth, and the peoples of this earth
I loved this. It was a great way to take five minutes and give respect to those lost in the Burning Times. I'd like to learn this song to sing at one of the Wiccan gatherings. I still have tears in my eyes and yet pride in my heart for being connected to those who gave their lives for something they believed in.
The very sad thing is, that the fear and hatered of the Christians, mostly as you said lissardo, the Catholics, is that some of the people in America who were tried, and murdered, were infact Christian women. They killed thier own people out of fear and hatred of wicca, witches, and the craft. Very sad indeed for both sides.
oh my god, can't some of you just stop saying that we are victims! The things is, the Christians always wanted to manipulate the mob... Now there are good christians and bad christians just like there are good wiccans and bad wiccans... I hate Christians, seriously, they brought me nothing but trouble all my life... When I was a little girl they used to bully me and humiliate me because I was a Wiccan...
Catholic eyes are covered by dogma and illusions, they are blind and deaf on anything from beyond of catholic doctrines.
In my country 95% of people declare themselves catholic... and i must say, most of them is like brainless puppets, they split poison on everything what is not catholic, they hate everything what they don't understand, they do what church order them to do.
If you have different point o view than they you are mason or communist.
Great job Lissardo !!! Christy would like it I'm sure. the comment below is in response to the trolls comment. It didn't post like that so I wanted you to know. Ignorant people will always take anything pro pagan as the grounds on which they can start another holy war. In words or otherwise. We don't need to defend our beliefs to them. If they don't like the song, change it. Simple . I don't think I should have to listen to commercials selling christian music on tv but its forced down my throat.
Because I have yet to find any songs depicting those acts. Or maybe because I am not Christian. Of course, if I am going to go that far I may as well make videos for every religion that has ever been persecuted. You think?
Of course I have to wonder why you respond that way to a video called "The Burning Times." What did you think you were going to be watching when you clicked on it???
there are millions of songs and videos made supporting and giving reconization to the trials and tribulations of christian, catholic and eastern based religions. maybe you would feel better listening to those. I seriously doubt this person made this video or the man that wrote this song, did so just to give you something to be mad about. Instead i believe they did it for those of us who appreciate the story about something that belongs to us. Our history. Hope you feel better soon. Blessed Be
It is an attack. Real witches WERE NOT persecuted during the witch hunts. Most were Catholics and were killed for land.
I'm not even a Christian, so I shouldn't care, but I get so sick of Pagans and Wiccans playing victim all the time. Especially Pagans and Wiccans who do not know their history.
Chill out. Noone is attacking you. You really need to find something else to do that wont upset you so much. I have many friends that are catholic and christians. We all get along just fine. I appriciate their history and they mine.
I'm sorry this is causing you such distess. Maybe you should watch something else.
No, but if I were a Christian, I would feel this to be an attack on Christians, portraying them as violent and brutal murderers. Which IS NOT true. This video is very misleading. That's all I'm trying to say.
That's the way you take the video. It says nothing in the song or the video about Christians. It talks about the people who came to power. AND if you study your history, it is the truth. The Roman Catholic Church (hey, not Christians) went to great lengths to have control over the masses. Not just through exterminating Pagas, but Jewish people as well. And pretty much anyone who did not agree with them. For the record, every civilation has their history of being violent and brutal murderers.
Maybe you should learn your history then. Most of the people burned during the original Inquisition (aka the Burning Times) were midwives. They were accused and condemed for something as simple as giving herbs to heal the sick. It had nothing to do with land. It was a battle to have control over the mdeical profession and the masses. The witch trials (or what happened in Salem) started out as a bunch of obnoxious girls being, well obnoxious. And those people were Protestant.
I fully appreciate and embrace every religion that teaches love and compassion towards all entities around us (and christianity has many such blessed followers). Beautiful post, it grounds me and touches my soul at every viewing. Great job!!
all religions had a black past, even if God itself proclaim love and peace the humans always try to convert and obligate one, specially who is different, does this pics look different from what we are trying to do with other races and religions or different oriented people?
marc359: I do not hate anyone, on the premise that I beleive we do not need yet more hate in the world.
I *do* wish to bring light to the suffering of our forebearers. That means that those who perpetrated the horrors must be named and held accountable, even if that only means a public acknowledgement and apology from each for what happened.
you know.......that was the PROTESTANT church back hundreds of years ago. That doesn't mean that's what Christians believe all of the time. We don't believe in witches and burn them all of the time! The protestants were the breakoffs of the Catholic, and there's a difference between Catholicism and Christianity. Do some research. Quit with the stereotypes.
Haven't you heard of the Inquisition. Google The Malleus Maleficarum Latin for "The Hammer of Witches", written in 1486 by Heinrich Kramer and Jacob Sprenger, two Inquisitors of the Catholic Church. These delightful individuals set down a blueprint for unspeakable torture against innocent women.
Yes I have, and yes they did lay it out. That was the CATHOLICS....not CHRISTIANS....and even if it was Christians lets say....not everyone believes in the same thing. I think the burning times were a mistake in history. That's what history's about...LEARNING FROM IT!
As a Pagan and Witch i admit I don't feel antagonism from most Christians today. but is this because we are not seen a threat anymore. That dubious honor now goes to Islam. although burnings are confined to the history books, the witchcraft laws have only been repealed in living memory. Yes we must forgive but not forget if so we risk pogroms if not actual burnings happening again. This song is not a battle hymn against christians but a ballad reminding us of our past
I agree a little bit. I agree as far as we have to remember our past and that is the point of history: learn from out mistakes. It's ok to be reminded of the past, but I'm just sayin...not every one is like that....a normal Christian isn't like that.
Actually the Protestants were responsible for the Salem Witch Trials. The video I made was more focused on the Inquisition, which was the Catholic Church. And I didn't make this video as an insult to the church, anymore than a person who makes something regarding the Holocaust is insulting all Germans. I just made it because I love the song and I thought the images went along well. I know it's not all Christians.
Thank you. Blessed be.

It's a great song, though a bit historically inaccurate, it makes out Wicca being an ancient religion, which it is not....but then even "the dead man on a cross" has pagan roots. cheers. I love Christy Moore.

We still have their Roman Catholic Canon Law in our land in the form of the Roman Civili so called law.
Hail Andraste goddess of victory

My only criticism of the song is that the Romans and Greeks did not treat women as Equals and in Egypt a woman had to fight tooth and nail to hold power because it often defaulted to men. But early on, "In the center often stood a woman" in Celtia that was true.
Women and Men in Celtia could both be priests or priestesses, both could be healers and druids, both could be warriors, and both could be great leaders like Boudicca.

All those 'thumbing down'
neckozeusa's comment explain your reasons why you disagree.

They are all from christian countries.Everything is just manipulation.I am always on side of oppressed.
neckozeusa 2 years ago
Agreed.

The very sad thing is, that the fear and hatered of the Christians, mostly as you said lissardo, the Catholics, is that some of the people in America who were tried, and murdered, were infact Christian women. They killed thier own people out of fear and hatred of wicca, witches, and the craft. Very sad indeed for both sides.

What the fuck kind of bullshit is this? Why don't you make a video for the early Christians who were put to death by the Pagans?
ThatAnonymousTroll 3 years ago
Because I have yet to find any songs depicting those acts. Or maybe because I am not Christian. Of course, if I am going to go that far I may as well make videos for every religion that has ever been persecuted. You think?
Of course I have to wonder why you respond that way to a video called "The Burning Times." What did you think you were going to be watching when you clicked on it???
lissardo42 3 years ago
there are millions of songs and videos made supporting and giving reconization to the trials and tribulations of christian, catholic and eastern based religions. maybe you would feel better listening to those. I seriously doubt this person made this video or the man that wrote this song, did so just to give you something to be mad about. Instead i believe they did it for those of us who appreciate the story about something that belongs to us. Our history. Hope you feel better soon. Blessed Be
humbuds707 3 years ago 2
It is an attack. Real witches WERE NOT persecuted during the witch hunts. Most were Catholics and were killed for land.
I'm not even a Christian, so I shouldn't care, but I get so sick of Pagans and Wiccans playing victim all the time. Especially Pagans and Wiccans who do not know their history.
ThatAnonymousTroll 3 years ago
Chill out. Noone is attacking you. You really need to find something else to do that wont upset you so much. I have many friends that are catholic and christians. We all get along just fine. I appriciate their history and they mine.
I'm sorry this is causing you such distess. Maybe you should watch something else.

humbuds707 3 years ago 2
No, but if I were a Christian, I would feel this to be an attack on Christians, portraying them as violent and brutal murderers. Which IS NOT true. This video is very misleading. That's all I'm trying to say.
ThatAnonymousTroll 3 years ago
That's the way you take the video. It says nothing in the song or the video about Christians. It talks about the people who came to power. AND if you study your history, it is the truth. The Roman Catholic Church (hey, not Christians) went to great lengths to have control over the masses. Not just through exterminating Pagas, but Jewish people as well. And pretty much anyone who did not agree with them. For the record, every civilation has their history of being violent and brutal murderers.
lissardo42 3 years ago
Maybe you should learn your history then. Most of the people burned during the original Inquisition (aka the Burning Times) were midwives. They were accused and condemed for something as simple as giving herbs to heal the sick. It had nothing to do with land. It was a battle to have control over the mdeical profession and the masses. The witch trials (or what happened in Salem) started out as a bunch of obnoxious girls being, well obnoxious. And those people were Protestant.

you know.......that was the PROTESTANT church back hundreds of years ago. That doesn't mean that's what Christians believe all of the time. We don't believe in witches and burn them all of the time! The protestants were the breakoffs of the Catholic, and there's a difference between Catholicism and Christianity. Do some research. Quit with the stereotypes.
dulcimerkj52 3 years ago
Haven't you heard of the Inquisition. Google The Malleus Maleficarum Latin for "The Hammer of Witches", written in 1486 by Heinrich Kramer and Jacob Sprenger, two Inquisitors of the Catholic Church. These delightful individuals set down a blueprint for unspeakable torture against innocent women.
libertywhite57 3 years ago
Yes I have, and yes they did lay it out. That was the CATHOLICS....not CHRISTIANS....and even if it was Christians lets say....not everyone believes in the same thing. I think the burning times were a mistake in history. That's what history's about...LEARNING FROM IT!
dulcimerkj52 3 years ago
As a Pagan and Witch i admit I don't feel antagonism from most Christians today. but is this because we are not seen a threat anymore. That dubious honor now goes to Islam. although burnings are confined to the history books, the witchcraft laws have only been repealed in living memory. Yes we must forgive but not forget if so we risk pogroms if not actual burnings happening again. This song is not a battle hymn against christians but a ballad reminding us of our past
libertywhite57 3 years ago
I agree a little bit. I agree as far as we have to remember our past and that is the point of history: learn from out mistakes. It's ok to be reminded of the past, but I'm just sayin...not every one is like that....a normal Christian isn't like that.
dulcimerkj52 3 years ago
Actually the Protestants were responsible for the Salem Witch Trials. The video I made was more focused on the Inquisition, which was the Catholic Church. And I didn't make this video as an insult to the church, anymore than a person who makes something regarding the Holocaust is insulting all Germans. I just made it because I love the song and I thought the images went along well. I know it's not all Christians.
