I saw these guys in 1973 in San Diego when they opened for Elton John. What a great Saturday night. They opened with Bodhisattva and never looked back. Countdown to Ecstasy hadn't been released yet. They played almost the whole album. "Skunk" was phenominal. One of my best concert memories. I have seen them many times since and they get better with age.
I yearn for Jeff Porcaro to really let rip on this tune, alas he's as dead as a doornail. No-one touches the drumming on the live versions he played on.
174First - forgive my ignorance. I don't know why I made such an error. Perhaps Mr. Baxter had some life threatening illness/surgery which I mistook for mortality? Thanks for the heads up. At first I thought you were goofing on me with his military clearances related to missle defense. I thought, ' WHAAAATTTT?' Yet I've researched it and lo and behold - it's true. Unbelievable, given he seems an unlikely 'expert'.
Mr. Baxter is still very much alive. He now consults to the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. intelligence community, as well as for defense-oriented manufacturers including Science Applications International Corporation ("SAIC"), Northrop Grumman Corp. and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. Go figure
This was a kickin version...but then they let Walter play. Too bad they lost Baxter and kept Walter the Noodle.- can you imagine how they'd be rippin if Skunk's ferocious genius and Denny Dias' oddities were still fueling them and their Mu chords? And if Mike M had been in the mix all along? Yikes.
But without ol' Walter, we prolly wouldn't have songs like Home At Last. I can't stand to listen to his playing, but one hell of a songwriter.
Some of these comments about the guitar solos remind me of that old chestnut joke, how many guitarists does it take to change a lightbulb? Four; one to change the bulb, three to stand around saying, "I could play that" When a band has created a body of work like that of Walter Becker and Donald Fagan, one makes a presumptuous ass of one's self to think anyone on here cares about his/her opinion.
@mdonnelly1971 - so very true. They're a musician's band and hence VERY few covers of the material. It's just TOO HARD.....but motivates one to practice. I'm off to do that very thing right NOW!
I still can't believe that dorks like the Rat Pack are considered jazz singers, when this is not considered jazz. What a disappointment. Of course, Steely Dan are a million times more valuable than Frank, Deano and those other schmucks.
Great version, Herrington's starts soling kinda in the style of Denny Dias, and they still do that same 'Parker Blues' changes substituition from I to IV starting @ 1:55 just as in the '93 band w/ Drew Zingg
I HATE the fact that all his solos always sound sooooooo pre-rehearsed or something. And on top of that, he's basically a hard rock blues guitarist. Like Joe Bonamassa, or however you spell it.
Thanks for sharing!! Interesting arrangement. It seemed to be a lot tighter than other arrangements that I've heard over the years. The horns and Herington's solo gave it a jazz feel. I liked it, but it's difficult to improve on the original "classic" version!
I think it's pretty good...Herrington does an excellent solo..too bad they focused camera on Fagen I/O Jon...that's a hard solo to play..it's very fast...sounds different from the original..but still excellent.
Jon Herington needs to loosen up, he is just too busy watching note for note. Dennis Diaz and Walter, they can throw it around. Ya' gottsta' put some EZ on those strings. He should listen to Alive in America for pointers.
Good for decades later. But nothing beats the 1973 live version in Santa Monica w/the guitar (instead of horns), Micheal McDonald and Jeff Baxter (?), and the drunk who does the intro. Damn, wish I had been there (wasn't old enough...lol)
This is one of my favourite Steely Dan compositions. It provides these great soloists with the platform to launch their virtuosity. Perfect fusion of jazz and mainstream.
hey, dkngln...that is funny! the horn section seems to have Lawrence Welkified it..yeah, the 'balls' certainly seem to be missing in this version :-(( this in 1 of my all time favorite tunes- check out Toto's live cover of Bodhissatva...smokin'!
Reading some of these comments, and laughing. Are you people serious? This is a killer performance of one of the Dan's all-time classics. Herington's solo alone is worth the price of admission. Carlock's drums. And the way they sing "Bodhi-SOT!!" Even Walter can't spoil it with his usual noodling. Major.
@mrrichardfeder Right on! The drums are amazing! My dad's a jazz drummer and this guy is talented and holding his sticks correctly! (That ALWAYS seems to make a difference in my dad's opinion. :-D)
Sorry to say this is a very watered down version of the original and the guitar work is very much a soft rock version.Try the Toto cover to get much closer to the original which is one of the worlds great rock classics, this is far too soft and jazzy even for the greatest band in the world who I dearly love.

This incarnation of Steely Dan's version AND Toto's version SUCK!!! There should be no no contesting it...they're beyond criticism. It should be obvious to any musician that's been influenced by the brilliant, beautiful, perfect studio version that this is muzak in comparison. When Becker's solo came up, I would have been on the ground laughing.
You make it a contest when saying this one or that one sucks. I love TOTO's version and that is just my own taste. No contest. Toto and Steely Dan both great band's.
$50 says you'd never even got in the door of the ampitheatre.......let along be on the floor laughing....At Becker?...haha.. you're funny .. hahah....go crawl back in your perfect studio world... idiot
Yes, brother! Of course Herrington plays better, but wouldn't we all HATE it if Walt didn't take his turns soloing? And I can't stand when someone calls his playing "noodling." If he wants to call it that, OK. To me, it's all good!

this just shows you how good Herrington is & how "great" Denny Dias is to come up w/ such a great solo he is one way under-rated guitarist/musician..
