I've always seen this as an allegorical song.

I feel as if the "patient" is having a night out and decides to experiment with a recreational drug--perhaps at 12:09AM, since that's 0:09 hours. The song tells the story of his body's physical and emotional reactions to the drug, as things get gradually worse and at 5:42AM the next morning, he either blacks out or physically dies, whichever you prefer to interpet it as. The dosage is irrelevant, as it's all part of the "science experiment" facade.

Now, listen to the music, and imagine how this test subject experiences things in each phase. These things can be whatever the music makes you think of. ;)
