  • 500 Calories is worth a bastard? I did not know that.

  • As grim and unsettling as it is, Threads is probably the best nuclear docu-drama ever made.

  • It's an average Saturday night in Romford....ffs

  • ITS A FUCKING MOVIE OR A DOCUMENTARY PEOPLE SHYT THE FUCK UP WITH THE POLITICS NO ONE GIVES A SHYT!!! SO WATCH THE MOVIE OR GO SOMEWHERE ELSE AND FUCK OFF!!!

  • Health-care would revert back to the 18th century within a matter of days- boiling instruments to sterilise them, amputations of limbs with hacksaws, pouring booze onto wounds to clean them etc. Before long it would become medieval- cauterizing wounds with hot irons, applying leeches to drain infected blood, maggots to clean wounds.

  • My God- what did the narrator say? That just one N-bomb dropped on ONE UK city would overwhelm the entire British Health service and even that was assuming all of it was still intact! And since that all of the largest hospitals and much of the specialist services including surgeons were all based in large metropolitan areas, most of it would be destroyed in the initial blast. The vast majority of injured and sick would be entirely on their own. The smaller regional hospitals would be overwhelmed

  • You should remember what US and british airforces did in Germany in 1943 - 1945. The biggest war crimes ever made. Millions died, no one was convicted in Nuremberg!

  • @155qwerty155 There is a difference. Who won that war?

  • @155qwerty155 how do you think we won that war?

  • it's times like this where one starts walking in any given direction with the hope that food will inevitably occur again.

  • What happens @5:50 that suddenly causes all the shrieking? I've looked at it several times but I can't tell.

  • @kayper54 I think it's people screaming because of all the surgery without anesthetic. You can imagine there would be no morphine or anything around so people would have to have shrapnel removed, surgery performed, and so on without any pain meds to help. It would be pretty unpleasant, I'd be just as concerned with the conditions, having an open wound in that environment would likely be fatal. You'd wind up with gangrene or something of the sort and literally rot to death. Not nice.

  • @kayper54 Pain.

  • @punipunipunisher Well, I guess the reason I mentioned it is because it seemed less like screaming in pain than it did like sudden crowd panic. But after looking at it again, I can see where it's more in pain.

  • I'm glad this movie shows the government doing what it does best. It triggers a nuclear war, then confiscates all of the food, water and other resources that the REGULAR citizens produced. The government did nothing to help grow the food, but they'll snatch it out of warehouses and markets and keep it for themselves while the farmers starve.

  • 3:10, Allister McGowan!

  • noooklear launch detected

  • To be honest, if a nuclear war broke out I would go for a stroll down the street and wait to be vaporized . No running around and screaming or hiding. Just a stroll and welcome death.

  • @TheAidanWhite Pretty much how I'd react.

  • @MrCryptica82 Let them be delusional. they make good cooking when they die.. specially in this situation...

  • I know this is supposed to be really heavy and intense, which it is, but I can't help but laugh at the skeletons you see, especially the one at 14 sec. They have hilarious facial expressions!!

But yeah, this film is pretty damn grim and scary. To hell with Jaws, Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers. You want REAL horror, watch Threads.

  • Weather report for the day: sky very dark and overcast, but precipitation unlikely; winds WNW 30-40 miles per hour, with gusts of up to 60-80+ miles per hour; lows in the teens and 20s Fahrenheit, highs in the low 30s. Radioactive fallout still lethal; I would strongly urge you to stay indoors today! -- if possible!

  • Thank fuck Thatcher destroyed our industry in Sheffield eh, no reason for us to be a target! :/

  • @samliffe my god you've worked it out, we don't have bunkers, the bitch turned the entire north into a refuge area!

  • On the plus side alot of the bankers would die in a nuclear war, so its not all bad for humanity.

  • @Relugus But so well everyone else go the same way.

  • @Relugus

Q: Why do the Irish call their currency the Punt?

A: It rhymes with their word for bank manager!

  • to be honest i would rather die then go through this

if the explosion dont kill you, the radiation will

  • @daniboi12345 That in a essence was what this drama was all about. 'Don't bother surviving just get vaporized.'

  • All that fat guy cares about is himself, lamb chops, treacle tarts and pints of lager...what a horrible man. Survival of the fittest my arse, he's never seen a salad.

  • War... Why?

  • They played this in Americain the 80s also, i remember watching this thinking the lucky ones were killed instantly. so sad.

  • lol @8:05 "back to survival of the fittest I suppose" that's rich considering the source

  • its the movie that made me crap my pants as a kid.

  • I think I would be asking for cyanide tablets and lengths of rope instead of food if I were them.

  • If I was a Survivor I think I would just shoot myself....what is the point of living in that nuclear nightmare

  • @anisete46

The idea was that there would be orderly distribution of supplies to survivors -- a joke in itself -- and that in order to do that, you had to follow the rules as they were set down for distribution. It carefully ignored the whole idea that the rules could *not* be followed because the chain of command was smashed beyond repair.

  • This is classic! The BBC wouldn't show anything as dark as this nowadays (probably because if Britain were hit by a nuke now, they'd fare even worse).

  • welcome to post-invasion iraq! i wish all the cheerleaders of that particular boondoggle were forced to watch this.

  • why does the lock on the gate look like its out of the 12th century?

  • Because all of the 20th century technology got blown to shit.

  • beacuse simpler mechanisms have less chance of failing in extreme circumstances.

  • Thats spot on, i didnt think of that. thank you.

  • It's called a "padlock". Ask your mummy or daddy about it. They may have seen one or two around.

  • the women in scene0:44 also played in 1984

  • The guy at 3:30 who yells 'who ya saving it for?' Looks like Geoffry Hughes - Onslow from Keeping Up Appearances.

  • shit, this could be a seen from the welfare office in downtown Detroit.

  • Yes it could, I pass threw Detroit everyday to and from work.

  • so you've still got a job..

  • barely!

  • @5:50 - I was expecting an appearance by the Beatles!

  • Yeesh...that chick holding the crispy-fried baby was rather creepy.

  • This is what its like now with Labour in power

  • are the labour right or left

  • hilarious comment

  • Yorkshire is reet broken. Its like a bomb went off

  • LOL

  • the women at 2:58 played in the movie 1984. I reconized her by her eyes

  • If I were a nurse in that place, I wouldn't even show up to work. I'd take one look at that bedlam and just run the hell away.

  • @nofrig

Well - 20 years later, this looks like a typical NHS accident and emergency department. You have to be made of stern stuff to work in such an environment.

  • Hard to work together when you've got nothing to work with, wouldn't you say?

And let's not forget, to others both you and I are part of the "masses". None of us are anything special - we're not superheroes, we're not of higher intelligence and just because we might think poorly of someone doesn't mean they're anything less. It's exciting to think of yourself as being better or of more importance, but everyone thinks they're better than others - that attitude alone makes you part of the masses.

  • That women in scene 0:41 also played in 1984 in a small clip.

  • i would go crazy and kill myself if that happend to me..

so horrible.. but why would russia nuke great brittain? what did great britany ever do to russia?

sorry for my bad spelling im not english.

  • maybe because g.b had missilies pointing at the ex ussr

  • I mean nuked

  • We are the best country why shall we get bombed! Why!

  • Britain ain't the best Mate, and in this Britain gets bombed because this story is based at the time of the Cold War when this sort of thing was quite possible.

  • I know where learning about it in history but still we could still be nuked anytime since ussr cant offord to change nuke targets :) we have 16 pointing at us :O

  • Hate to shock you, pal, but the USSR hasn't existed for more than 15 years...

  • Well that means my history teach lied.

  • Hülye idióta... Meg kellene tanulnod olvasni.

  • @ShockwaveProducts North Korea for one seeing that tension has been rising in the area in last couple of weeks, since they proved that the North Korean's had attacked that South Korean war ship killing number of its crew in the attack. Who said the Cold War was truely dead.

  • I don't see what all the fuss is about. Just pop a few Rad-X, shoot a few Stimpacks and get some Nuka-Cola down you and your laughing. You'd be fine until the Super Mutants and Raiders turn up!

  • hehe

  • hahaha!!

    and a few days deathclaws!!

  • A bright future....underground! Call your local Vault-Tec representative today!

  • War. War never changes.

  • @calicheSCOT loool

  • @calicheSCOT

What were the name of those cows in the game again?

  • @clergame Brahmin.

  • @calicheSCOT

Thats it. It was a GG

  • poor person holding the burnt child, bet you she was full of life and joy before hand. traumatised beyond recognition but no one will take away her baby now its always with her.

  • Human criminal stupid intollerable attitude to war for all most foolish reasons is disturbing.

  • Yeah-your'e a real hero

  • Can you imagine being in that hospital? The electricity would be out, so it would be dark and freezing cold. It would be standing room only amongst a throng of screaming, sobbing, psychotic people who were bleeding, shitting and vomiting all over the place from radiation exposure and other illnesses and wounds. The whole place would absolutely reek of vomit, faeces, urine, and death. Even in the highly unlikely event you could even see a doctor they could do practically nothing for you.

  • What pistol??? in the Uk peole are not allowed to go to the corner shop and buy any weapon below a missile and then walk off with it. What do you expect the hospital to do to you if your gonna bleed to death from a wounded leg of course they will amputate it to save your live at that point all the people are just living for the day. Tomorow is a whole new load of nightmare.

  • I never understood my Ruth took that book for!

  • She took the book on birding because it was the one link left with her fiance Jimmy. It was a sentimental "keepsake" of sorts. Wouldn't you want to have something that had belonged to someone precious to you?

  • In order to help identify foreign birds, of course.

  • Ironic that it's "Foreign Birds" and not "British Birds."

  • Things to do after this happens: One..Load Pistol, Two..Put pistol to head, Three..Pull trigger.

  • "I don't know... a few slices of bread, some soup... a lamb chop... treacle tart... a few pints of beer. BASTARDS!!!"

  • dident jhon cleese take part in this ?

  • What's the point of medicine in such situation? Hospital would be the last place to go after nuclear attack. Do they think that after having your limbs amputated you'd have better chance of survival? How can one move without legs? How can one work and collect food without arms? Pointless. Just like the nuclear war itself. It can eliminate humanity but not the stupidity of humanity.

  • Excellent point.

The survivors must make the determination to survive at the cost of the injured.

  • It's like Night Of The Living Dead at the start, all shuffling into the hospital like that!

  • 6:58. What the hell is that on the floor!!!!

  • Would you REALLY want to know?

  • Yes! it's been annoying me eversince i first saw this film.

  • Well, I don't know either... but I like it that way!

  • Well i don't know either, but it reminds me of the scene from Last of the Mochicans where the Muagua cuts out the british generals heart and shows it to his tribe, perhaps it's a human heart. But it also looks like a huge lump of turd!

  • but your right, i think this scene is designd so you don't exactly know what's going on in there if you know what i mean.

  • I know what you mean. I also believe it capitalizes on the fact that most people - myself included - would rather be ignorant of it! *wink*

  • HHmm...you got me wondering the same thing...Could I dare think it looks like an internal organ, or maybe her baby...who knows.

  • It's radioactive shit.

  • Hospital looks just like Gaza Now.

  • Why wld they withold food altogether and shoot relatively harmless protesters? Or send them 'home'? How did the soldiers stay healthy/safe? The film is full of implausible scenes like this.

  • They withhold the food because most of the people within a certain radius of the blast will have already received fatal exposure to radiation (either from the blast or from exposure to fallout) and they will be dead soon anyway.

  • @Mattyd242 Well if that was so then they should of done the decent thing and shot the whole lot of them.

  • The soldiers guarding the warehouse where the food supplies are stored seem to have forgotten that those people (like Bill Kemp, Jimmy's father)have in most cases no homes to go back to because of what happened. By the way, was the fellow whom they shot when he tried to break in the youth from part 4 who told his mother at the shopping centre to come home immediately as the radio news said that Americans and Russians had begun fighting in the Persian Gulf?

  • This should be manadary viewing for all elected Gov. officials, this documentary is really sobering

  • I would have just gone to the country or somewhere away from population.

  • good god the hospital, oh the hospital...

  • Those charred corpses look gruesomely realistic.

  • 600 million tons of dust and soot? This works out to about one pound per 4150 square feet for the entire earth. Probably not enough to cause a global nuclear winter--but what about regional nuclear winters over the countries directly attacked? The dust and soot would remain concentrated for a while after the war--what effects would it have? After all, it wouldn't just go away.

  • One question I've always pondered but don't wanna find out: with today's more advanced medicine, would the hospitals at least be able to treat a tad bit better?

  • RantingRocker, today's medicine where that is concerned isn't anymore 'advanced' than it would be. I would suggest getting ahold of potassium iodide that would help some for the radiation, but the best thing to do would be to dig a hole and stay in it as long as possible. And if you die, at least you have a coffin partly made.

  • What happened to "..jump up, not down.." lol! I work in a modern American hospital and I have to say your advice was the best. Embrace the return of Ra!

  • This is tragic. Ruth is thinking.."she was to be my mother in law".

I felt sorry for that family, scattered about like rubbish, no one to identify them, or even care.

  • I remember seeing part of this when I was 10 or 11, and it scared the shit out of me!

  • The traffic wardens are getting their revenge. Brilliant!

  • I always thought it rather stupid of Ruth to leave the shelter so soon.

  • Well what would you do? People would lose their comprehension after something like that, and not remember the advice anyway.

  • To me the scariest scene was when Ruth went outside and saw the burned bodies lying around and the lady holding the dead baby.

  • You are just out for some attention, but even so you are a sick bastard.

  • You're an idiot....

I'm a liberal who serves with pride in my county's military. I've served in shit holes that you could never even imagine. Liberal's are not neccesarily lazy or selfish... neocons are certainly selfish... the jury is still out on their laziness.....

  • Bastards!

  • I think the hospital scene is the scariest piece of film I have ever seen. Of course, the entire film of 'Threads' is pretty horrifying in itself.

  • another point...the last thing mentioned in this scene was...a fight between one local politician and another..The first politician is arguing a case for the criminals..yes criminals...my first thought was..fuck em...then i thought...they are allowed to love in prison cells..why shoulodnt they be allowed tolove post nuclear holocaust? Although half of me says...toomany dencent people should have the right to live before them. Anyhow...isn't it all academic? Each and everyone is fucked.

  • it's interesting how in the USA's the day after...they simply show people geting shot dead by aqn exection squad...and in this..an english version...they show the army firing warning gas shots first...

  • agt334 has triggered something at the back of my mind : everyone involved would be traumatised, knowing full well law of averages means at least one person you knew and cared about is very definetly dead. and that means your favorite baby sister or your parents. too terrible to contemplate. that its best to assume they are ALL dead. how can you keep your mind on the job? and what is law anyway after something like this? society would be dead in 2 or 3 generations.

  • as shown in the next clip, the law becomes survival of the fittest and the toughest, meaning, it becomes martial law... those with guns get to decide what to do. i don't think a global nuclear war would blanket the entire ground, so, those living in remote areas, away from major cities, should be fine... that is... assuming the radiation isn't blown in their direction.

  • Recent events look like they could be bulding up to this (Russia-Georgia conflcit).

    Shit...

  • If you're not killed by the other side, or by the radiation, your own side will kill you instead.

  • The Mother clutching the burned child, that was straight out of anecdotes from Hiroshima.

I disticnctly remember one of the victims explaining the exact same scenario.

  • It was "White Light Black Rain".

  • White Light Black Rain is a documentary every person older than 18 must view. HBO doesn't fuck around on this one.

  • And even this soldiers would suffer mental damage they could never recover from. Think about it - how would we react , if everything we cared about, our house we worked for, the town we lived in would be destroyed ? If the people we liked, our friends, maybe our family would be dead by one strike ? Its hard enough to see one person you loved dead - what would be if they were all dead ? I think the devastation of a atomic war would cause a trauma we could not stand.

  • 6:08 mutant zombies. I love it.

  • >_> ballantrae, those would be real people, living, not undead that would happen to. It's not funny, it's disgusting that we'd invent such sadistic weapons.

  • Lighten up a bit. I know it seems callous, but I live in a city which is target number one if some lunatic wants to make a statement. I don't know about you, but I prefer to joke about it rather than go completely nuts. Anyway, I agree with you about it being disgusting to have invented this weapon in the first place.

  • Best thing that could happen to Sheffield really , at least Doncaster will be ok.....

  • rotflmao.

  • I think in this situation it would be best to be one of the Solxdiers. I mean you get Gasmasks, supplies, shelter and weapons to defend yourself with (As well as others to help you).

Also, the scene at 3:36 looks alot like a Zombie movie...

  • Not not much better off since you have to shoot civillians. I'd rather take my chances with the apocalypse.

  • Ahhh, right, we all knew it was the conservative capitalists who would save us after a nuclear attack on the general population. They're impervious to radiation, blast, and scorch.

  • "Ahhh, right, we all knew it was the conservative capitalists who would save us after a nuclear attack on the general population. "

    You're pretty much right.

Regan, with his conservatism, managed to stand toe to toe with the Soviet premier during 8 years of the cold war. Ultimately, we won.

  • No, it was Kennedy who went toe-to-toe with the Soviets and both sides managed to stand down.

Reagan didn't in any way stand toe-to-toe, but he DID sign the IRBM limitations treaty of 1987. The first glimmer of hope that the dangerously stupid Cold War and its arms buildups would end.

    Won? Won what?

Anyway, Reagan was said to have become extremely depressed after he watched _The Day After_.

Your take on history and reality seems clouded by your own politics.

  • Having just done a history paper on this I have to say that if there was anybody who made nuclear war more likely, it was Reagan and his insane build-up in weapons. In six years he doubled the amount of bombs and placed missiles minutes away from Russian cities - making a hair-trigger war much more likely. He ignored Soviet invitations to control weapons until very late in his second term. Crazy.

  • It was that insane buildup that ultimately caused the demise of the USSR--a good thing--simply by the fact that they bankrupted their union by trying match the USA for technical feats (Apollo, Shuttle), and tried to get ahead in the arms race.

I don't know why some people cling to the Reagan days, when even HE admitted a dangerous situation was in play.

  • Well this is the theory but it is rubbish. The Soviet Union spent pretty much the same amount on weapons before Reagan as after. The Russian leaders, especially Andropov and Gorbachev were desperate to try and de-escalate things but just got 'evil empire' statements and the SDI shoved in their faces. Carter was much more intelligent about it all I think. He warned people how mad Reagan was but people just like hot air and bluster even if it means a nightmare like the above is more likely

  • "It was that insane buildup that ultimately caused the demise of the USSR--a good thing--simply by the fact that they bankrupted their union by trying match the USA for technical feats (Apollo, Shuttle), and tried to get ahead in the arms race."

Wrong. USSR crashed not because their military spends or arm race. It was mainly economical and social reasons.

  • it was becuase of the numerous revolutions that brought down an exhausted communist regime

  • @ukrainesuperpower87 there is a great documentry about the URRS and their subs -- how they were buidling subs -- but were cutting corners to save costs so as to keep up with the USA numbers.....

  • @ukrainesuperpower87

if you think of it that's exactly the same thing that will cause the demise of the USA... you can't use 1-2 mln $ rocket to kill 1 insurgent ;-)

they can't keep up with china...
