After running Combofix i had a loss of sound. It was easily fixed by using system restore, which is different than System Reformat of course. I just chose a date before ever having the virus. What this did was restore my windows components prior to the Ping/combofix repairs. I have since had no PING.exe problems and all is good. Hope this helps some of you.
@BayDragon1 I'm simply explaining the method i used for repairing the issue i had. Combofix removed the trojan, but also my sound. If Combofix does remove sound, system restore is the only way i know of that fixes it. It worked for me. Do you know of any other fixes for that issue?
There are two types of PING.EXE virus, one is fixed via TDSSKiller, the other is removed using Combofix. I had the one that was fixed by Combofix. My computers symptoms were. Google redirects, slow or no internet page loading. PING.EXE was eating my virtual memory by 99%. I had this a week ago, my computer is still clean all is back to normal.
Instructions are as follows. Safemode with networking>runcombofix> once combofix is done. It should tell you to restart. Done.
Thanks my brother's computer shit itself with the ping virus, he had like 10 svchost.exe's open and a PING.exe process running. He was about to blow 30 USD on Bit defender when the ping virus is designed to be undetectable, so bit defender prolly wouldn't have worked, also his AVG was picking up on it but never fixed it for him. Now his computer is fine, Thanks for the help.
omg thank you so much!! Your video saved my small family business... poverty sucks! We were desperate! thank you thank you thank you! may Karma bless you!
At first it said it didnt find anything, I booted back in safe mode and it didn't find it. But now I no longer have Ping problems, how weird. Anyways thanks :D
That bitchy virus was loaded on my netbook; netbooks really dont want to get this virus. It eats all system ressources and these machines already do not have a lot of ressources to work with.
I went through the steps described in the video, and everything went as described. So far half a day down and no high CPU usage of ping.exe. I am running ESET NOD32 anitvirus and it would not find and fix the issues, and support is a joke. I am going to switch to kaspersky when my annual subsciption for ESET NOD32 expires. Also added bonus was it took care of a search engine redirect virus as well. Two for one fix, got to love it.
This worked for me several months ago. But now, ping is back with a vengeance. And this time I can't detect what's causing ping to run and hog 99% of CPU. Until there is a definite solution, I made a temporary one
Simply put the following in a batch file and run it(remove all the @):
:loop
ping 1.1.1.1 -n 2 -w 1000 >N@U@L
t@a@s@k@k@i@l@l /I@M ping.e@x@e /F
g@o@t@o loop
The batch file will simply force end ping every 2 seconds.
Ran it; it works. Ping.exe and Ping6.exe still reside in system32 folder but do not execute every few minutes. They are gone from task manager. Thanks.
Don't know about Windows 7 but after using BayDragon1's program and a few other programs (namely aswMBR.exe) I was able to kill the bitch so to speak. I'm assuming the source of the problem is "afd.sys" in the drivers folder in system32 considering that's the last thing I deleted before ping.exe stopped reappearing. Oh and I had a fun time trying to get my internet back considering "afd.sys" is a dependency for the DHCP service. Good luck to anyone who's still battling the bastard virus...
@Wardain83 thanks for the help for people who couldnt find dat virus. I suggest you to qoute people's comments who couldnt find dat virus with my program.
To recap "afd.sys" is the culprit. It's a dependency for the DHCP service so without it you're fucked internet wise but at least you fucking killed the bitch
Replace it with a good version which WindowsXP-KB958752-x86-ENU.exe will do and then you're good to go. Finally no more redirects on google and ping.exe going crazy...
The source of the virus is afd.sys in the system32 folder of windows xp... It keeps causing ping.exe to show up in taskmanager which starts eating up all your memory. I solved it by deleting afd.sys but I DO NOT SUGGEST THAT cause it'll remove the ability to connect to the internet. I suggest finding something to replace the infected file with a working one probably somewhere on the net.
These steps are really useful. if you dont find the virus, try to reboot in safe mode and run it. it will definitely find the virus. Thanks a bunch. I have nailed it finally.
dude you FKING rock!!! you just saved me having to pay my IT guy hours of figuring that out....thank you SOOOOOOOO much!! and to all you who are having problems...again, do it in SAFEMODE!!!
At first it didnt find the rootkit virus files but when you run it in SAFE mode it worked. Thank you very much!!!. It seems too good and too easy to be true but it really worked!!!
i only deleted the ping.exe in the c:\windows\SYSWOW64 directory. what a fuckin little biatch. i got the initial virus while running full strength everything, and didnt download or execute, just surfing, and within reason. browser defender toolbar and browser protection did nothing. file guard and process guard did nothing, firewall did nothing. high UAC seems to stop that shit though. we'll see, idk, im flailing wildly
none of this worked for me. tdsskiller did nothing. pctools, malware fighter came up clean after removing other issues. this stinker ping.exe hijack has been left behind. i searched it out and changed ownership in the advanced button under security tab for the file. i know ping.exe is a legit file, but being hijacked somehow. i dont understand, ill figure it out later. for now my delete is holding up and no more CPU max out. just delete all ping.exe's and look for the file on windows disk. idk
so annoyed with windows 7, back on xp an internet popup couldnt put an exe file into my system and start it without any notification at all.. grr now it happens all the time and i run a firewall ehh
i got TDSSkiller on my computer but the malware or whateve ri got blocked me from using it... had something like this before and took fucking ages to get rid of, this time i think im just gonna wipe my computer and put a fresh windows install on, pain in the ass to start over again but oh well, really cant be bothered to put up with this thing =/
It fixed my ping problem and I'm running Vista. I've been fighting this problem all day. Microsoft Security Essentials didn't work and neither did Malwarebytes.
@mustangmike420 try again... maybe it isn't the rootkit. locate it: if it isn't in system32, then it's a trojan horse hiding like ping.exe then do this:
-when you've located it, press shift+del (->immediately permanent deletetion) but do NOT delete it yet.
- open taskmanager and suspend process and then click on OK
@BayDragon1 i got tired of dickin around backed up all my inportant files and put a fresh copy of windows on with microst essential problem solved thanx for ur help tho!!
in all seriousness i wana make love to u and im a boy nd idc if u are a boy... THANK U! im subscribing dude u jst dnt kno how bad ur helping me out....ugh....the stupid shit kept shutting down mi fuckin fire wall like a lil bitch! it got in because mi avg had to update and all mi shit was shutdown, so mi comp was opened nd i think i may have been on sum porn nd it gt in lol...thanks man...so much ....ur a life saver
DUDE!!! I fucking love you, i battled with my damn computer for 6 hours not knowing that the virus was called the ping.exe virus, you deserve the Nobel Peace Prize.
thanks!!! i tried everthing before this. tried deleting ping.exe, just kept coming back. ping wasn't the problem, just used by the virus to tie up memory and keep my cpu runninig amock! 5 minute fix!!! thanks again.
When i open ping.exe file location, it opens system 32, when i scan it it doesnt register as a virus, (im using avg) , suspending process takes down cpu usage but it still uses a shit load of physical memory, i scanned for no viruses on my computer but im still having this problem, should i just call microsoft?
@LelouchKiraStricken if it's not in system32... in system32, that is Microsoft's own ping.exe if you find one SOMEWHERE ELSE, then do this: -when you've located it, press shift+del (->immediately permanent deletetion) but do NOT delete it yet.
- open taskmanager and suspend process and then click on OK
I tried this program a few weeks ago and ping.exe still shows up when i open task manager. It takes up alot of cpu and memory! If i end the process it comes right back up within a minute or so. Then i just have to suspend it but even that dosnt keep it down for too long. I just dont know what to do. I may call microsoft soon because this is ridiculous!
Yep, this fix worked for me! Spent days searching for a reasonable solution to kill this damned thing. After looking at a lot of complicated procedures and software, I admit I was skeptical that the simple file recommended would succeed in removing the ping.exe demon. So far, the exorcism has held up. Thank you for sharing.
@BayDragon1 I found it and I deleted it but it keeps brings itself back like after 1 minutes, I also tried the scan but it's not detecting, should I change the perimeters or is there any alternative?
@CoolVideoWatcher101 try again... maybe it isn't the rootkit. locate it: if it isn't in system32, then it's a trojan horse hiding like ping.exe then do this:
-when you've located it, press shift+del (->immediately permanent deletetion) but do NOT delete it yet.
- open taskmanager and suspend process and then click on OK
I spent somewhere around sixteen hours trying to remove this rootkit using some pretty advanced tools and boom...a few clicks from the program you provided and it's gone. To the person who made this: Thank you very much you have no idea how much trouble you have saved me. It may not seem like much but you are GIVING BACK to the world in your own way. Keep up the positive actions and thank you very much.
recently i let a friend on my computer and he got me infected with that bogus rogue antivirus scam crap of a virus but this one managed to sneak in as well. Id never encountered this one before and your vid helped a lot man! Just now fixed all the shit on my computer and its running good again. thanks mate!
YES! winning, thank you so much. Never mind what I said, it worked, I just needed to juggle around a few settings for the thing I downloaded. I'm keeping it JUST in case.
@cupAsoup11M run as an administrator, if it's still the same, go to kaspersky's site and find something about RootKit. but I think there's something strange with your Computer because I also have Vista and Se7en PC's and it perfectly works on my Vista Ultimate...
@GeneralMcNuggs try again, do an AV scan. if them don't help, try finding it's location either it's the REAL ping.exe (it can be a virus hiding like ping.exe)
[FIX] NO DOWNLOAD NEEDED 1. Open up Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) 2. Find Ping.exe's folder It should be in C>Windows>System32 or C>Users>AppData>Local>Temp 3. Right click Ping.exe Properties>Security>Advanced>Owner 4. Click yourself or the admin and set yourself as the owner of the file. 5-6. Go back to Task Manager and right click Ping.exe then click End Process Tree As soon as that is done, go back to Ping.exe in the folder and delete it. 7. Empty your recycling bin 8. Like 9. Profit.

Yugo411 2 months ago
@Yugo411 try again... maybe it isn't the rootkit. locate it: if it isn't in system32, then it's a trojan horse hiding like ping.exe then do this:
-when you've located it, press shift+del (->immediately permanent deletetion) but do NOT delete it yet.
- open taskmanager and suspend process and then click on OK
it should be fine now...
OR
scan again...

VocaTAU 2 months ago
@VocaTAU no, the ping.exe you mean is the Microsoft's ping.exe, if there isn't another... sorry mate but IDK (it has NOT to be in syste32)

Thank you so much. And by the way, it seems like EVERYONE is getting this virus. !

YES! winning, thank you so much. Never mind what I said, it worked, I just needed to juggle around a few settings for the thing I downloaded. I'm keeping it JUST in case.

It's no working for me. It says no threat found, when I'm staring the pin.exe in the friggin face! .__.
I have Avast running, any chance that's what could be holding it from finding it?

@Kudoichi92 Same thing for me, except I'm running Norton instead.

@cupAsoup11M run as an administrator, if it's still the same, go to kaspersky's site and find something about RootKit. but I think there's something strange with your Computer because I also have Vista and Se7en PC's and it perfectly works on my Vista Ultimate...
BayDragon1 2 months ago
This does NOT work on Vista. Also, after I ran it, nothing came up.

@GeneralMcNuggs try doing it again, and if it isn't, try locating. this programme won't fuck it more. maybe it's a trojan working like ping.exe
BayDragon1 2 months ago
Okay my computer is more fucked up now than it was before I used this program. Sooo pissed!
GeneralMcNuggs 2 months ago
@GeneralMcNuggs try again, do an AV scan. if them don't help, try finding it's location either it's the REAL ping.exe (it can be a virus hiding like ping.exe)
BayDragon1 2 months ago
Thanks for this. That guy Ping as a bastard.

Like 9. Profit.
